After a morning strolling around in the shadow of the imposing 15th-century Frauenkirche (“Women’s Church”), head north for an immersive experience at the famous local car museum, then find a quiet spot in Olympiapark for a leisurely picnic under the bright Munich sun.

The Oktoberfest festival is an absorbing experience that draws visitors from all over Germany and around the world. Drop in between mid-September and the first Sunday in October to drink in the lively atmosphere. Festive fun is guaranteed at Munich’s sprawling Christmas markets, which run from late November. Spring and summer are popular times with foodies and adventurers, who head to the region for the short asparagus season and stunning hikes in the nearby Bavarian Alps. There aren’t wild extremes in weather here, and snow and heat waves are rare events. If you arrive in the city during the weekend, it’s worth bearing in mind that the vast majority of stores — including supermarkets — are closed on Sundays.

Drehleier Theater

Looking for some interactive entertainment? You could become part of the show at the intimate Drehleier Theater on the eastern side of the Isar River. Pick from comedy performances, musical offerings, and even burlesque acts at this popular local venue; you can grab a bite to eat here, too.

Bellevue di Monaco

Located in the heart of the city, Bellevue di Monaco provides homes for young adults, families, and mothers in need of support, while the on-site café’s inclusive approach includes a multicultural menu and a “pay what you can” policy. Volunteers run language classes, social meet-ups, and even a bike repair shop.

Watch surfers in the park

On your morning stroll around Munich’s peaceful English Garden, don’t be alarmed at the sudden sound of thundering water. Simply grab a coffee and settle down by the rushing Eisbach creek to watch the city’s gaggle of surfers hang ten and show off their skills. Be aware, though: unless you’re an experienced wave rider pro, it’s advisable to leave this activity to the regulars.
