the apartment is a very great and special place. Surrounded by the nature you live in a big cozy apartment. You can listen to the animal sounds around you in the night. Jim was very friendly, he gave us helpful information about the area. Check-in was flexibel.

Modern Jungle Cottage

AngelaRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
We had a very short stay here and it was great. Autumn was a very good and prompt communicator, and so kind. The cottage had everything we needed, the instructions were clear, and it felt very private. Highly recommended for 1-2 people, although you can make a 3rd person work if needed, as we were able to. Thanks so much, Autumn!

Inn a Volcano

JulieRating, 5 stars4 days ago
This was such a magical stay!!! I cannot say enough how much my daughter and I loved this whimsical and wonderful volcano inn! All of the little touches that matched the volcano room were delightful and Cassandra went above and beyond with little amenities and treats waiting for us on arrival. Definitely worth your while to stay in this volcano while visiting Hawaii Volcano National Park 🌋

Spacious Historic Estate ~ 5 min walk to Hilo/Bay

AaronRating, 5 stars1 week ago
The pictures don’t do the house justice. Definitely the most peaceful and serene Airbnb we have ever stayed at. Our baby loved crawling inside and in the garden. We barbecued in the lanai and had wonderful morning coffees in the sun room. The location meant we experienced everything big island had to offer. Kevin was hospitable throughout and ensured we felt welcome and at home in Hilo. Can’t thank you enough

ZachRating, 5 stars1 week ago
Our stay with 2 young boys was fantastic. The location was perfect for all the day trips that we wanted to do on this side of the island. The place is very private and comfortable, we would definitely stay again. Gina brought us fresh fruit from her yard as well.

Hilotown condo w A/C~central to island adventures

EileenRating, 5 stars4 days ago
LOVED this location and the unit! Gorgeous views of the adjacent park from the lanais and a great place for morning walks or runs. I also really appreciated the extra touches — the welcome basket, yoga mats, well-equipped kitchen and bathroom, and a very comfortable bed. Great value. I’d absolutely stay here again.

Kailani Hawaii-Modern Studio, feels like home

AmyRating, 5 stars1 month ago
We really enjoyed our stay here. The unit was just as pictured and was really beautiful, clean, and modern. It was conveniently located within a short drive to the downtown Hilo area where there are plenty of shopping and dining options. We were also short drives to several beaches. Our host, Linda, provided clear instructions on how to reach and access the condo and was very responsive with any questions we had. I would definitely recommend staying here if you plan to visit Hilo.

Hilo Ohana Stay

JuneRating, 5 stars3 weeks ago
My daughter and I came for my son’s UH Hilo graduation and I invited her Dad to stay with us as well. The 3 of us really enjoyed Liza’s place. The kitchen is fantastic- really modern & extremely well equipped. We appreciated the large fridge with filtered water & ice in the door. 2nd bathroom was very handy when we were all getting ready. Location is only 5 min drive to downtown or less. I really can’t think of any negatives or items to be aware of - it was better than described, one of the best places we’ve stayed. We didn’t use the pool so I can’t comment on that. Garbage was easy to find. We didn’t use complex’s laundry either so I have no comment about that. I was surorised that we didn’t hear much from the other units. It’s a quiet building and everyone we passed was friendly. If you’re sleeping in the primary suite, be forewarned there is noise from the road below which gets loud at times. I messaged her twice with Qs and she replied super quickly. Thx for a great stay Liza!

Polynesian Koi Pond Gardens Condo in Hilo w/pool

Erika JoyRating, 5 stars1 week ago
Staying here was my home away from home. We enjoyed the peace, sort of away from the busy roads. It was in the middle of a lot of places. They provided everything that we needed. Other than that, we will definitely return on our next trip here to Hilo.

Beautiful island getaway: pool, lanai, garden view

ClotildeRating, 5 stars3 weeks ago

We had a wonderful stay at Aloha Falls. Loved sitting on the lanai watching the waterfall and going down to the waterfall. The showers are so big! Staying here feels like you’re remote from everything but its location is so close to downtown Hilo, making it the perfect place to stay. We would def stay here again

The Waterfall Retreat at Reed Island

JulieRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
We loved our time at this home! The waterfall is more serene and beautiful than the pictures and provides the perfect Hawaiian atmosphere! The location is very convenient to town, down private street with steep driveway up to the house. The bedrooms are all upstairs and the bedroom with AC has queen bed. No TVs upstairs. House was comfortable with fans, recommend closing the curtains over the open windows at night to avoid bugs coming to the lights. We really enjoyed this place and would highly recommend to others!

The place was very nice and tidy, check in was flawless and it was spotless. The location of the place was quite secluded besides the other place next to it but still very private. The star viewing was spectacular and the hot tub is a very nice add on.

Hale Hibiscus

MarynRating, 5 stars3 weeks ago
We enjoyed our stay at Hale Hibiscus bc it’s a nice, bright clean space with lots of windows and it has a nice lawn area to the side. There is a sweet Golden Retriever who lives on the property next-door and she came and said hi. We also appreciated the washer and dryer. The property is approximately a 15 min walk to the restaurants, but you will pass by a number of unhoused individuals as you enter the town. Might not be a great idea to walk after dark. If we travel to Hilo in the future we would love to stay there again!

Beautiful, Relaxing, Eco Friendly Tropical Retreat

LeahRating, 5 stars2 months ago
Definitely one of the better AirBNB's we've stayed at. Location was in a quiet area only about 12 minutes to downtown Hilo. There were lots of little extras that made our stay stand out including the Japanese toilet, good quality towels, and the loofahs provided. Things were well labeled in the apartment and it was very nice to have access to laundry. Apartment was very clean too.

Your guide to Hilo

Welcome to Hilo

The town of Hilo meets the definition of an idyllic Hawaiian destination. Its black sand beaches are lined with swaying palm trees arching over aquamarine waters, dramatic waterfalls plunge from shelves blotted by tropical rainforests, and some of the planet’s most active volcanoes are only a short drive away. Yet Hilo sees a fraction of the crowds drawn to its sunnier sister town of Kona. Hilo’s lush beauty and relaxed vibe can be attributed to its status as the rainiest city in the United States. Many visitors drop into Hilo for a quick visit before jumping off to explore the nearby Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. But hikers, snorkelers, waterfall chasers, and science enthusiasts will find a wide range of activities to choose from in Hilo, accompanied by a collegiate town spirit, thanks to the nearby University of Hawaii at Hilo.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Hilo

The lush eastern side of the island of Hawaii is temperate but characteristically wet, soaking in an annual average of 140 inches of rainfall. This wet climate means it’s advisable to layer or bring a light jacket in preparation for intermittent showers; if you plan to venture up to the higher elevations inland, especially near summits and volcanoes, come prepared for legitimately cold temperatures. Spring and fall generally offer visitors the best overlap of warm and dry days in Hilo, the latter months thinning out crowds as the tourist season comes to a close. Hurricane season spans June through November; while violent tropical storms are always a possibility, historically they’ve rarely made landfall across the Big Island.

Top things to do in Hilo

Punalu‘u Beach

Punalu‘u Beach is the most famous and accessible black sand beach on the island. Hawksbill and Hawaiian green turtles are known to amble up the volcanic-rock-tinted shoreline to sunbathe here. Just be sure to give these aquatic natives a wide berth onshore and in the water, as they’re protected under the Endangered Species Act.

Hamakua Coast Scenic Drive

While Rainbow Falls State Park unequivocally warrants a visit to take in its grand cascade of water, a more adventurous option awaits along this scenic serpentine 40-mile route tracing the North Shore of the island toward Waipi’o Valley. The road is dotted by a multitude of waterfalls and old sugar cane fields along the way.

Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden

While flora grows in abundance across Hilo, this botanical garden and nature preserve hosts a riot of tropical plants of unmatched color and beauty. There are more than 2,000 species collected and cultivated from across the globe, easily accessible to visitors by winding wooden pathways.
