My family enjoyed staying here for a fun weekend in Charlottesville. It was a quick, easy drive to Charlottesville and other local attractions. We traveled with our 8 month old baby and our in-laws and everyone felt right at home! The sun room was a perfect spot for family time. The hosts were mindful about having plenty of toiletries and snacks for guests. We definitely recommend staying here!

We had a wonderful stay at Diana’s Airbnb off Shore Drive on Denwiddie From the moment we walked in, we could tell how much thought and care went into this place. The attention to detail was incredible—from the beautifully curated décor to the small but thoughtful touches like Band-Aids, cooking essentials, and other convenient extras that made a big difference. The location was perfect, and the space truly felt like home. Thank you, Diana, for creating such a welcoming and comfortable space!

This is an excellent location for a big family getaway to the lake. We loved the big yard and the deck, as well as the dock area to sit. My kids raved about the comfy beds, and the couches made for good sleep too for teens who love to stay up late and chat. Every cooking utensil or appliance imaginable which made cooking for our crew awesome! Thank you for a relaxing stay.

Entire Home - Close to Beach - Pet Friendly

KaraRating, 5 stars4 weeks ago
My time at the Crab Shack was wonderful! Upon walking in, the home was more spacious than I expected, and everything was extremely clean. The fridge was stocked with both bottled water and S. Pellegrino sparkling water. On the counter there were snacks available to us. The kitchen was stocked with everything you could possibly need for cooking, an assortment of teas, and coffee for the Keurig. All appliances are newer and user friendly. The bathroom was stocked with shower/bath needs, a hair dryer, hair straightener and toiletries. The bed was very comfortable as was the sofa! One of my favorite parts was the neighborhood. Everybody is very friendly. There are walking trails within a two minute walking distance that go into the woods, and on my own I felt safe. The trails are well kept and pretty open. When I needed to extend my stay last minute, John responded to my request within 5 minutes. For someone who visits VB often, I have found where I will be staying when I return!

Pet-Friendly Country Farm House on Pond

PamelaRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
Our 3 nights stay at Golden Meadows Farm was wonderful! It far exceeded our expectations. Richard, our host, had even prepared for the last minute addition of our family dog. A water bowl was filled and waiting for her. The large fenced-in yard spaces were gated and secure, very well maintained, and a joy for our dog and the grand kids to run and play. The pond and surrounding grounds are beautiful and well landscaped. Richard was always available if we needed anything. He even gave us a dozen of his "home raised" eggs, which we all enjoyed for breakfast. The farm house was clean and well equipped with anything you might need during your stay. The beds and linens were very comfortable. My 4 year old granddaughter asked if we could live there :) We hope to be able to return to Richard and Julie's farm for another visit to the beautiful state of Virginia.

Quick trip to visit family and this was such an easy place to come to. We travel with service dog so price wasn’t the best but the yard is set up beautifully to bring pets and you’d never know anyone has stayed there with pets, which is always lovely. Daryl couldn’t have been more responsive or kind. Will definitely stay there again if the need arises.

Roger’s beach house was charming. It was an older-style home with many modern updates. Quick and easy walking path to the beach. The pool in the backyard was lovely. It was a little dirty upon arriving and Roger came right over and got it all cleaned up for us during our stay. The neighborhood was a little rough we did have a few uncomfortable encounters with homeless people being two girls alone it was a little unsettling. Overall, I would definitely come back again. The weather was absolutely beautiful for our stay.

The Happy Place-Quiet, North End 1 block to ocean!

LindaRating, 5 stars5 months ago
We had the most wonderful stay at this beach house! Walking into the home was like walking into your own home - stocked with everything you could possibly need, and then some. I love that we didn't have to pack all the bulky beach gear and bikes! They provided EVERYTHING you would want. All we needed were our clothes and personal items. The game cabinet was a huge hit as was the Wii which had all the best games! I'm always concerned renting homes that allow pets, but you would never know this was a pet home - there was no pet odor or stains, and the fenced front yard was very convenient. A short walk to a beautiful beach, and an access rode for easy bike riding made this the perfect location. Mary was an amazing host - responsive and very kind. Loved our stay so much we are hoping to return some day.

Your guide to Virginia

Welcome to Virginia

Colonial American history began in Jamestown, when Brits successfully settled on an inlet off Chesapeake Bay, the country’s largest estuary. It went on to play key roles in the Revolutionary and Civil wars, along with the Civil Rights movement and 9/11 attacks. Sites like Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, the living history museum of Colonial Williamsburg, and the Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail are good starting points for history buffs exploring Virginia. But the state’s allure extends far beyond its past, political power, and ties to U.S. presidents. Conservation has preserved much of its wilderness, which ranges from sandy Atlantic beaches to marshes, pine forests, and national parks like Shenandoah and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Today Virginia balances the folksy traditions of the Appalachian Mountains with the dynamism of the mid-Atlantic region. Expect Southern hospitality, but also hip culture in cities like Richmond and Norfolk.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Virginia

Virginia stretches from the sea to the mountains, creating many different climate regions. Generally speaking, expect the hilly areas to be roughly 10 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than the coast. Spring hits the sweet spot for the best time to rent a cabin, with relatively warm temperatures and sparse crowds. Its blooms and balmy weather peak in May, while summer brings serious heat and sticky humidity, but also more tourists. Look to autumn for warm days, cool nights, and extravagant fall foliage in mid-to-late October. Winter tends to be cold and gray. Events-wise, spring ushers in the month-long Virginia Arts Festival, which includes a celebration of military music. The Fourth of July is big pretty much everywhere and September sees the ten-day state fair in Richmond. Search for Bigfoot — called Woodbooger locally — or hit the Richmond Folk Festival in early October.

Top things to do in Virginia

Appalachian National Scenic Trail

This 2,180-mile public path stretches from Georgia to Maine, but Virginia boasts more ground than any other state. In fact, nearly a quarter of the trail’s length — 555 miles — lies in the commonwealth. Day hikers should look to stretches in Shenandoah National Park, where climbs rarely exceed 1,000 feet.

The Ghost Fleet of Kiptopeke

Nine partially sunken ships made of concrete form an offshore breakwater at Kiptopeke State Park. Steel remained in short supply after WWII, so a shipyard in Tampa, Florida, produced 24 of these hauntingly beautiful beasts. The fishing pier offers good views, but kayak out for a close-up peek at the birds and dolphins attracted to the intentional wrecks.

Luray Caverns

Set within Shenandoah National Park, the largest cave system in the eastern United States includes cathedral-sized rooms with skyscraper-high ceilings. Expect vast columns, translucent drapes of calcite, and gin-clear pools mirroring fantastical stone formations at this National Natural Landmark. The space even rocks out with the Great Stalacpipe Organ, the world’s largest musical instrument. The keyboard vibrates stalactites across three acres of caves.
