All about Huntington Lake

Nestled high in California’s Sierra Nevada, Huntington Lake is an artificial reservoir that was constructed in 1912 as part of a big hydroelectric project. It didn’t take long before locals in the surrounding communities discovered its recreational potential: Huntington Lake soon garnered a reputation as the area's premier destination for sailing, fishing, and horseback riding. These days it’s also a jumping-off point to explore the Sierra National Forest and Kaiser Wilderness. Winter, too, has its draws: Several ski hills adjacent to the lake, such as Chinese Peak, are ripe for snowbound recreation. No towns or communities exist on the reservoir, but you can find private cabins around the entirety of Huntington Lake. The larger city of Fresno is within a two-hour drive of the lake, as is the famous Yosemite National Park.

What are the top things to do in Huntington Lake?

Sailing

Since its earliest days, Huntington Lake has been a sailing destination. The tradition continues today, with several marinas on the water offering ramps and mooring services for boaters. Steady winds during the summer provide prime conditions for the sport. If you don’t own your own sailboat but still want to navigate the lake, the marina offers canoe, paddle-boat, and kayak rentals.

Sierra National Forest

Huntington Lake sits amid the Sierra National Forest and its 1.3 million acres of wilderness available for public use and recreation. One of the most popular activities in the forest is hiking among the coniferous pine stands. Over a dozen trailheads are located within just a few minutes of the lake, like the four-mile Rancheria Falls Trail, with several more making themselves available as you drive further out.

Yosemite National Park

Around two hours away, Yosemite makes for an excellent day trip from Huntington Lake. Renowned for its famed waterfalls, ancient sequoia forests, and towering granite walls, the park dates back to 1890 and is America’s first national park. It contains hundreds of miles of hiking trails, educational centers, and an abundance of wildlife, including native species like Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frogs, Yosemite toads, and Mount Lyell Salamanders.
