Your guide to Cabra
All About Cabra
Cabra is a small rural town in central Andalusia in southern Spain, midway between the larger cities of Córdoba and Málaga. People have lived here since the Stone Age, and Cabra has been under the rule of the Romans, Visigoths, and Moors, leaving an array of historical sites and castles. Learn more about the area’s history and culture at the Cabra Municipal Archaeological Museum, which is full of artifacts dating from the Paleolithic to the late modern period.
The town serves as a gateway to the nearby Parque Natural de las Sierras Subbéticas, one of Spain’s most impressive national parks, where water has been carving limestone canyons for hundreds of thousands of years. The park’s mountains and valleys are home to golden eagles, wild goats, and hedgehogs in a richly biodiverse landscape of native plants and mosses — you might even spy rare orchids growing from cracks in the rocks. You will find ample opportunities for hiking and wildlife spotting here. In Cabra, visit one of the local cafes and restaurants to try Andalusian culinary specialties like goat’s-cheese salad, stuffed pork rolls, and ham and egg soup.
The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Cabra
Summers in Cabra are hot and dry, and tend to be very busy with summer travelers. This is a good time to come to enjoy outdoor activities and explore all that Andalusia has to offer. Spring and fall usually have mild weather and are slightly quieter. Winter is the slowest season. On the third Saturday in June, the small mountain town of Alfarnate, around 1.5 hours south of Cabra, celebrates its annual bounty of cherries with stalls, speeches, folk music, traditional dancing, and of course fruit as part of Día de la Cereza.
Top things to do in Cabra
Parque Natural de las Sierras Subbéticas
The UNESCO-protected Parque Natural de las Sierras Subbéticas is a stunning national park full of rugged landscapes. Its more than 78,000 acres are excellent for hiking and wildlife viewing, with more than 70 species of nesting and migratory birds as well as wild boars, mountain goats, and mouflons (horned sheep). There are various trails leading to the top of the mountain of Tiñosa, from where you can enjoy sweeping views of the region.
Cabra Castle
Built as an Arab fortress prior to the ninth century, Cabra Castle has had a long and turbulent history. The turreted complex sits above the west of the town, framed by high walls and rows of palm trees and featuring a courtyard overlooking the peaks of the Sierra Subbéticas UNESCO Global Geopark. The castle has changed hands many times and now serves as a school.
