We have restored and repurposed an authentic barn silo, making it a one-of-a-kind stay you'd have a hard time finding anywhere else in the world!
Featured on international travel show, "Tour Guide", our barn silo is restored into a two story, rustic bed and bath making it a unique stay few can say they've experienced!
There is so much to see and do near Silo on the Ridge! We are located just outside of beautiful Decorah, Iowa where you can float the Upper Iowa River, bring your bike and ride the new 11 mile trail, sit and watch the our world famous Eagles Nest, take a shooting lesson from a world class local gunsmith, or visit our award winning local breweries. The Silo is surrounded by some of the best fishing and hunting in the country and there is lots to see and do in the nearby small towns and countryside. Just short drive away is our family restaurant, Dotzy's. Tell them you're staying with us and get a killer made to order Cookie in a Skillet on the house!
  • Awesome quiet get away. We grilled out and it was just homey

  • A cool, unique, and cozy space. We only got one evening there for a quick getaway and it was a lovely experience. We really enjoyed visiting Decorah and are looking forward to returning again and we would definitely stay in the silo again.

  • Unique, cozy and everything in between. Jim has done an excellent job with the silo space and the property is gorgeous. Incredible views both morning and night along with some very friendly horses to feed. The location is perfect and just a short drive to the beautiful little town of Decorah. Thoroughly enjoyable stay and would certainly recommend to those looking for something a little fun and different.

  • Wow! My mother and I loved staying in the silo for a night. Upon check in, we were met by Jim the owner. He was extraordinarily kind and his land is beautiful. Loved staying here and I will in the future!

    Elle2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • Even better than we had imagined. Such unique accommodations in an awesome area. Jim was more then helpful!

  • Absolutely amazing place to stay! One of the most relaxing nights of my life! The silo is so comfortable and sitting out grilling on the deck was incredible! Can’t wait to come back and sleep in the caboose next time. Thanks Jim for a great time!

    Matt2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • What a perfect stop on our road trip! The silo is so cozy and charming, the nearby hills and cornfields are picturesque, the horses are fun to watch, and the night sky is spectacular. Jim is super nice and friendly, and does a great job making you feel welcome! Highly recommend!

Honeybee Cottage is a private cabin located next to our own beach/lake & 140 acres of beautifully groomed trails. It is creatively decorated & full of amenities, including a coffee/tea bar. Make use of the games/books/DVDs that are provided. Feed the cows, read a book on the beach, take a hike or mountain bike in the trails, nap on the porch, fish for bluegills in our lake, race the pig, skip rocks/canoe in the creek, have a bonfire (S'mores provided) & stargaze the evening sky. Lots to do!
Our hobby farm, Star's Hollow, is located 15 min North of historic downtown Cedar Falls and 10 min South of Waverly, IA. Lots to see and do...or choose to simply drink some sweet tea on a swing under a big shade tree. With chickens, ducks, pigs, bees and a milk cow (and her calves;), along with deer, wild turkey, owls and bald eagles... you will experience nature at its fullness. This is truly the land of milk and honey!
  • Had such a wonderful stay. We really enjoyed the mid morning hike in the woods. There is no doubt about it, we will be back for sure!

  • Guaranteed to be a relaxing retreat. Penny & Dan's attention to detail is superb - from the fresh baked cookies, to the sign welcoming us personally, to the fabulous grounds and trails, Stations of the Cross, fireplace...it all was incredible. Only regret is that we only booked for one night! Thanks Penny and Dan for blessings us with your radical hospitality.

    Ellen2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • This is s great little secluded spot for animal lovers. We loved the chickens, cows, ducks, pig and dogs that greeted us. It is like staying all night at a petting zoo!

    Randy2019-10-18T00:00:00Z
  • This was a great place to relax and unwind. Close enough to towns if you want to explore but out far enough you can feel like you are in the middle of no where. Loved the animals!

    Melanie2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • The Honeybee Cottage is incredible! The cottage is decorated in a shabby chic decor with special touches and meaningful messages everywhere you turn. My favorite place to relax was beside the pond listening to the cows and chickens, while watching the ducks playing. This is truly a magical place!

    Maria2019-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • My wife and I loved our time here! Set on a beautiful lake surrounded by gorgeous woods and pastures, Honeybee Cottage is a sweet and beautiful getaway for a couple. Penny had everything ready for us down to the personalized welcome sign, and the cottage itself is just delightful! Penny showed us around and left a golf cart for our use during our stay! Next time we’ll need to leave more time to enjoy the grounds and nearby hiking trails as well.

    Nathaniel2019-09-09T00:00:00Z
  • This was a relaxing stay. It’s away from city noise and it’s a great place to disconnect. We enjoyed building a fire and having S’mores (provided!).

Enjoy the restoration of our charming and cozy caboose! Complete with all the amenities you'll need and more! Including dishes for cooking, barware for cocktailing, and even the original conductor's chairs to watch the sunset over the horse pasture!
We've kept the original conductor's chairs and overhead handrails in our complete restoration...but have gussied up the rest for your comfort quite a bit!

  • This place is a gem! We arrived with horses eating hay, a barrel smoking fire and quiet beautiful rolling farm hills. WE SLEPT IN A CABOOSE! The tiny details such as the horseshoe hooks are delightful but honestly... Nothing beats the old school tape and record player. Thanks Jim!

    Linda2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • This was a nice, private, and quiet spot. Check in was easy and we had everything we needed for our stay. I recommend the caboose!

    Shannon2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • The caboose was an amazing stay. Very unique and quiet. Although the host lives on site, we felt our privacy was very well respected. I highly recommend Jim as a host for someone looking for some quiet down time in a unique location

    Victor2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic and very unique place to stay. The caboose was absolutely perfect. Great location and host.

    Michael2019-11-23T00:00:00Z
  • What a treasure! Very much enjoyed our stay

    Goldie2019-11-15T00:00:00Z
  • My partner and I honeymooned in the caboose. It was such a neat space, with a really good heater (it dried out the air a lot, but we were there in November so it was expected). It was a wonderful stay, meeting barn kittens and the horses, and it was so close to town which had so many awesome places to go. We’ll definitely be visiting again.

    Adrien2019-11-08T00:00:00Z
  • This was a fun stay and our family was able to stay comfortably, making sure to balance outside time and some planned out games and activities even in the close quarters of a caboose. The kids were thrilled to see the horses and cats, along with all the fun touches inside. It was too cold for us to enjoy the deck or grill, though we planned ahead with our meals, but be sure to bring food that can be made in the microwave or the small hot plate. This was a perfect, cozy overnight and very memorable. We will visit again!

It was a bit later at night when it was getting to tough to keep driving in the weather and she came through and helped us out big time! Definitely would look up this air bnb next time in Waterloo.

  • Mary was an amazing host during my stay in Iowa for the Democratic Caucuses. Her cozy apartment, in Waterloo's historic district, was the perfect retreat for my long days of canvassing and walking. The home features a nicely sized living room and kitchen, along with a comfortable bedroom. In addition to assisting me with transportation planning, Mary also offered invaluable local tips. Dean, the tenant who lives across the hall, was also welcoming and helpful during my stay. If you're visiting Black Hawk County, this is the place to stay!

Conveniently located between Cedar Falls & Waterloo, don't miss this oasis within walking distance to restaurants, bars and amenities. The neighborhood is exceedingly safe--both due to lack of crime, secluded area, and in ability to walk to nearby locations.

Private cabin located next to our home. 480 sq ft downstairs with 90 sq ft loft. West Union is the gateway to the rolling hills and scenic bluffs of Northeast Iowa. Two parks nearby (Dutton's Cave, Echo Valley) for hiking. The majestic bluffs of Pike's Peak and Effigy Mounds are 40 minutes east. Decorah, with its 14 mi bike trail and beautiful Falls are 30 minutes north. The cabin is quaint and cozy, perfect for a couple's getaway. It has the Cabin feel within the city's limits .
The stairs to the loft are steep and the ceiling height in the loft is 5'4". We recommend that if you are a tall person or weigh above 200 lbs, you may want to sleep on the Queen size couch sofa sleeper.
West Union has a beautiful town square with a great coffee shop. The town has one of the nicest city parks you'll find. Dutton's Cave and Echo Valley Park are minutes away that offer great hiking and amazing photo ops.

    Allie2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Our only regret is that we only booked it for one night and that we had to leave so soon! It felt like home. It was the best Valentine's day that we have had in our 20 years together. Echo Valley State park and Volga lake are beautiful places to hike!

Welcome to Decorah House, a private and beautifully renovated stay on the second floor of our historic brick house in a quiet neighborhood just five blocks from downtown Decorah. The space is bright and full of natural light and filled with plants. The apartment sleeps three, has a beautiful bathroom with tiled shower, and a lovely front living room and kitchen. Walk to Pulpit Rock Brewing Co, La Rana Bistro, Impact Coffee, Oneota Food Coop, Hotel Winneshiek, Vesterheim and so much more.
We've put five years of hard work into this amazing house and we're excited to share it with you! We're two guys in our 30s and love Decorah. Whether you're here to visit one of the breweries, trout fish, mountain bike, visit your kids at Luther, or just trying to unwind, we think you'll love everything about our community and the house. In addition to welcoming travelers to Decorah House, we've welcomed guests to our other overnight rental Trout River Log Cabin for the past seven years. We know what it takes to be exceptional hosts and we'll do everything we can to ensure you have a great experience. The Decorah House stay occupies the second floor of our renovated greek revival brick house. The space is bright and full of natural light, and sits perched overlooking the Oneota Valley. The unit consists of a large living area with adjoining kitchen, a spacious bath, and large bedroom. The bedroom has a queen bed and there's a queen size blow up mattress to accommodate a third or fourth person. Paul has restored old buildings going on fifteen years. He eats, sleeps and breaths old buildings, architecture and design. We've put so much work into making the space just right, and we think you'll agree. In the main living space you'll find two orange barrel chairs with accompanying hand made shaker style walnut end tables, a sugar maple butcher block dining table made from flooring from a local landmark school, and Persian rugs. The floors are beautiful reclaimed doug fir from a catholic priest house that was recently demolished. All the woodwork, the butcher block countertops and tables, maple cabinets, maple vanity, shaker end tables (basically everything you see) were all made by Paul in the second floor of our garage workshop. During the day Paul's a high school industrial arts teacher and teaches several furniture making, design and construction classes. The kitchen has a high quality European brand stainless steel gas range, small refrigerator, and deep-basin stainless steel sink. The kitchen is stocked with quality cookware. We also supply organic coffee and a french press. The kitchen is pretty small, but adequate for light cooking. The bedroom is spacious and overlooks the forested bluffs of the Oneota Valley. And to boot there's a spectacular 200 year old bur oak tree that sits right outside the bedroom. The bedroom has a firm queen bed, a reading area, and clothes closet. A third or fourth person can be accommodated on a queen size blow up air mattress. Linens and bedding are provided. The spacious bath has a floor to ceiling subway tile shower. The bathroom flooring is Marmoleum, a traditional petroleum free, linseed oil-based linoleum invented in Britain in the early 1850s that's made to look like marble. The hand made vanity is sugar maple with a white oak butcher block top. Bath towels, Nature's Gate shampoo, conditioner and body wash are provided. The house was built in the early 1850s by Decorah's original founding family, the Days from upstate New York. When their son Claiborne built the house a few years later, the village of Decorah wasn't more than a few log houses and a saw mill. Claiborne was the entrepreneurial type, serving as Decorah's first postmaster. He also owned a lumberyard and built several houses around town. Today it survives as one of the few remaining structures of the period. Ever since Paul was a little kid he's had his eye on this house. And when it came available, we jumped at the opportunity to buy and restore it. Of all the buildings representative of Decorah's early settlement period that remain standing, this house is probably the most intact and best preserved. It's an incredible piece of local history.
If you've never visited our little corner of the world you're in for something special. Decorah is undoubtedly the hippest small town in all of the midwest. No, we're not joking. From its nice downtown with a few good restaurants, Luther College, two breweries, abundant parks and trails, a historic hotel and a full-sized food coop, to its placement in the bottom of a bluff-lined valley, Decorah has so much to offer. Most rural midwestern towns are on the decline. Decorah isn't and doesn't feel like that. Sure it's quirky and has its host of problems like any other place, but the difference between those places and here is that we have a big community of people who are working to make this place vibrant and strong. We're two guys in our early 30s and feel totally comfortable living here. Be sure to check out the many parks and hiking and mountain biking trails within walking distance of the house. Lining Decorah's north side is the Van Peenen Park system, an area that has helped catapult Decorah to the forefront of regional mountain biking and outdoor recreation. Or perhaps kayak and canoe the Upper Iowa River with one of the many local outfitters. The house sits in a residential neighborhood a few blocks east of downtown Decorah. The area tends to be quiet and is safe, and we have great neighbors. All the streets in town have sidewalks and cut curbs.
  • Such a beautiful and historic place...10 out of 10!

  • Amazing space. Clean, quiet, calming. We loved every minute!

    Andrea2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • This was an amazing and unique property. The restored space is gorgeous---light-filled and beautifully furnished and included everything we needed. The location was great--a very easy 10 minute walk to the center of town (we prefer to walk when we can). Communication was easy and check-in was simple. And we got a great dinner recommendation--La Rana Bistro was delicious! Decorah was a surprisingly vibrant community--with assets that would be typically be found in a much bigger town/city. We will definitely be back for another visit!

    Christie2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Very sweet and peaceful place in the heart of Decorah. Everything we needed. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Shower was luxurious. Paul and Nathan were quick to respond and very welcoming. I'd definitely choose this place when/if I visit Decorah again.

  • This is a perfect space for a couple for a weekend getaway! Right when we walked up the stairs, we spent the next 15 minutes admiring all of the details that we first noticed and as we spent more time there, we kept finding other things we loved about the place. It was such a perfect space for a weekend getaway. Relaxing. Beautiful. Very homey feel. Also a great place for single staying as well. A perfect amount of space and you have the amenities you need and are close to everything. Highly recommend.

Welcome to Luna Valley Farm, an organic farm nestled deep in a driftless valley, 10 minutes north of Decorah. On our working farm we grow organic crops, rotationally graze sheep and cattle on pasture and invite the community out for wood fired pizza on Friday evenings. This is our second year hosting glampers on our farm and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you here! (It is a working farm, but we promise we'll let you relax!)
Pitched on an oak savanna valley side, our platform tents are furnished with rough sawn hardwood floors, a king bed with luxurious linens and places for you to sit and read or write or simply relax. Each tent includes a private patio where you can listen to the birds sing and watch the sheep graze over your morning cup of locally roasted coffee or afternoon glass of locally brewed beer. Our tents are 12x14 and are furnished with a king sized bed, night stands, dresser and bedside lamps. Both ends of the tent can be tied open to allow beautiful summer breezes to pass through. On the back side of the tent you have a 12x13’ private patio with two adirondack chairs and a table where you can watch the birds or read a good book. Tents come equipped with two LED lanterns, fans, cell phone chargers and a large battery pack, which powers the bedside lamps and can be used to charge a laptop or ipad. Cell phone service is spotty down here in our valley, allowing you to truly feel like you’re away. If you need to connect, a wifi network is available to guests for use down by the barn where the bathrooms are located. We provide all bedding including sheets, blankets, bedspreads and a down comforter (in case it’s a chilly evening) and also provide a variety of pillows so you can find one that suits your sleeping preferences. Down the hill from the glamping tents you’ll find a fire pit and a tote containing everything you need to start a fire. Please let us know if you need more wood. To prevent the spread of tree diseases, we ask that you do not carry in your own firewood. The bathhouse is located a 3-4 minute walk from the tents, in our barn and is shared with pizza guests on Friday nights. We provide towels and eco-friendly shampoo, conditioner and soap and a spot for you to store your toiletries so you don’t have to carry them back and forth. There are two bathrooms, one of which contains a big beautiful tiled shower (you’ll love it). If you look close enough you’ll even notice some of the original barn beams that have been incorporated into the design. The canvas wall tents come with a deep history. For years our local Girl Scout Camp (Camp Tahigwa) hosted groups of girls for week-long camps in the summer, some of which were in wall tents in the woods, overlooking the local trout stream. When the camp got sold a few years ago, we purchased a few of the tents with the dream of someday pitching them on our farm to welcome guests for a farm stay! We have a passion for breathing new life into remnants of the past and doing what we can to repurpose things of deep history and profound beauty. A local Amish tarp repair shop helped us fix up the tents and they have found a new life on our farm, where we hope they will be enjoyed for many years to come. When we bought our farm six years ago we fell in love with the burr oak trees on all the valley sides. They had become severely overgrown and one of our goals is to restore them to the oak savanna that they once were. The first place we’ve cleared is the glamping site! It is one of our favorite parts of the farm and we’re excited to share it with you. From the tent you have views of oak trees, pastures, birds and our (hopefully not too weedy) garden. If you walk around our farm you’ll get to see the Canoe Creek, solar panels that power our farm, sheep and cattle grazing, beehives busy at work and the beginnings of a pond project that will help mitigate flooding. Whether you’re here to visit the breweries, trout fish, mountain bike, visit kids at Luther or just get away from it all for awhile, we know you’re going to love Decorah and we’re happy to share information about our favorite local places so you can make the most of your stay.
If this is your first time in the Decorah area, chances are that it will not be your last. It might sound crazy, but Decorah is undoubtedly the hippest small town in the Midwest and has been coined as the “mountain town without mountains” by Midwest Living. We love our little corner of the universe and want to do everything we can to ensure that you do too. In our community we have an abundance of small farmers, homesteaders, small businesses, breweries, parks and trails and a thriving local food cooperative. Locals care deeply about this place and work creatively to help it become even more vibrant and strong at a time when so many small midwestern towns are on the decline. We hope you’ll take time to walk through our downtown and check out some of our beautiful parks while you’re here. Our farm is located just 8 miles north of Decorah and only a few miles from the Minnesota border (as the crow flies). We live in Pleasant Township, which is a unique place in and of itself with a lot of interesting characters tucked into the hills. If you look closely you’ll find market gardeners, heirloom seed enthusiasts, artists, a grass milk dairy (it belongs to Tom’s parents) and a network of people always willing to lend a hand when a hand is needed. We are lucky to live in such a special place.
  • What a wonderful place to spend our anniversary weekend. Even with our nine month old in tow, the tent was perfect accommodations and the bed so so comfy cozy for the chilly nights. We really felt like Maren and Tom went out of their way to make our stay personal and memorable, like letting us tag along to watch the sheep change pasture. The farm was so peaceful and the perfect retreat from the city. And how cool to be there on a record-breaking night for (delicious) pizza! If you’re looking to spend some time in Decorah (or get away from the city), this is a one-of-a-kind place to do so. Remember to pack some work/hiking boots (for walking the farm) and a frisbee (for playing catch with Noche the pup).

  • Great place to go to “getaway” and very clean and calming place. Fast response time definitely helped as well. Would 10/10 recommend to anyone needing a weekend disconnection!

  • Our stay at Luna Valley Farm was better than we imagined! No bugs, beautiful and quite space, comfy and cozy bed, very clean, etc. My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time exploring what Decorah has to offer. Would love to return!

    Gabrielle2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • Maren & Tom were terrific hosts and truly made us feel at home. I would highly recommend staying for those who want to “disconnect” from the world and “reconnect” with themselves. Everything was exactly as advertised if not more.

    Alexandria2019-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • My mom, my 4-year-old son, and I had a great time. The tent was lovely and decorated beautifully. The bed was comfortable. And the hosts were very helpful and kind.

  • I booked both tents for the Summer Solstice weekend. My husband and I stayed in one tent, and our longtime friend stayed in the other. You can find my review on Airbnb site as well, but here is our friend's review: "I'ver never actually gone glamping before and was curious at how I'd enjoy the experience. Maren and Tom might have set the bar too high for any future experience I might ever have. It was truly like staying in a 4 star hotel, while also being woven into nature and the elements - in a safe, protective way away from the bugs. They truly have thought of everything you could need: flashlights, extra batteries, bug repellent, USB phone chargers, natural sunscreen, wine openers, recycling, coolers to keep your snacks and drinks in, and gorgeous fresh flowers to decorate the tent. I didn't get to speak with Tom, but was able to have some great conversations with Maren during our stay. She is such a bright light and her listening skills are unparalleled. Very impressed with their operation and the way they make you feel so special and taken care of. I loved every minute of our stay and can't wait to come back one day!"

  • Staying at Luna Valley Farm was a once in a lifetime experience. The tents are incredibly cozy and a perfect compromise between camping and a hotel. Their pizza nights on Friday are delicious and can provide plenty of recommendations for places to eat, drink, and explore in Decorah. We can't recommend them enough.

Enjoy the charm of Decorah and the beauty of the outdoors at Rustic Acres.
This ground-floor suite sleeps four. With a living room with woodburning stove and streaming TV, telescope for stargazing, space for game night, pool table, private deck and fire pit - this space makes a great getaway for couples, small families, or friends looking to get together!
We are about a ten minute drive to downtown Decorah, which is a great area to grab a drink or a bite to eat. There are also several places to enjoy nature - see our guidebook for some of our favorite recommendations.
  • I would highly recommend staying here! It is a beautiful place and was very clean. The property manager greeted us with a warm welcome, a hand-written card and a gift card to a local restaurant. How cool! He also had a fire pre-built and ready to go for us in the fireplace inside upon arrival. This is a fantastic place to stay, in a great location, and has wonderful hosts. Highly recommend.

    Kyle2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • This place was such a great value. Spacious living area and bathroom. The view was private and relaxed. A night by the fireplace was very enjoyable.

    Zach2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • This place was perfect for what we needed! We came to the area to visit drink beer and get away, and this place did not disappoint! We were able to get a taxi to and from the breweries, which cost about $15 per trip. We typically used Hometown Taxi in the afternoon, then Midnight Taxi at night (It runs until 3am). There are many things about Decorah that we love, but we were not expecting to love the accommodations nearly as much! We only stayed in the lower level, but the property was fantastic. Right out the back window we could see a waterfall within 50ft. A juvenile deer stopped by Saturday and Sunday for a drink. We also saw wild turkeys, and took advantage of the wood-burning stove for heat! This was the perfect getaway!

    Greg2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • This is the most beautiful place to stay! Jon had a fire ready welcoming us as we arrived in 10 degree weather! The lower level is huge and perfect for the four of us gathered for a girls retreat. It snowed 8 inches overnight and we had a beautiful winter wonderland to go explore in the morning! We did not want to leave! I highly recommend and we will be back!

    Deb2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay at a decent price. When we arrived, there was a bottle of wine waiting for us as well as the fireplace was already going. The morning we left, a tom turkey was right outside the window near the small waterfall. Would definitely book again, especially summer.

    Janis2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great stay! Beautiful location! We loved turning on the wood burner during the cold winter months.

    Kara2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful rustic setting complete with a waterfall and brook. It would be fun to explore the area in warmer weather.

    Rachel2020-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • The place was just as described. Very clean and had all the amenities listed. The addition of a wood stove made the place cozy and a pool table was tons of fun. The yard is beautiful with plenty of wildlife ass well as the streams and waterfall. Overall a great getaway that will allow you to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

  • We had the pleasure of staying at this cute bunkhouse for 2 nights! The hosts were extremely friendly and welcoming. We were showed such amazing hospitality! There were so many wonderful and thoughtful touches around the house and that were prepared for our stay that made our stay feel so enjoyable. The place itself was super cute and cozy. Everything was clean and comfortable. We got to roast marshmallows by the fire, explore the wooded area in the back, and cozy up inside with hot chocolate. We had such a great time and would love to come back again!

  • You can’t go wrong staying here. Danielle has thought of everything to make you stay perfect. The area around the cabin is nice with a fire pit and seating a picnic table out front, short walk to bathroom. Everything is neat and clean. The host was awesome. I wanted for nothing she thought of everything, napkins, silverware, microwave, mini fridge, Kerig machine and more, don’t worry if you forgot your shampoo or need a band aide it’s there. There was even a tie out for my dogs so they didn’t have to be on a short leash attached to me. I guarantee you’ll enjoy your stay. sWhat was important to me was I was able to smoke outside on the patio which has a cover, just in case it rains. And could watch my dogs and relax with a cigarette and my morning coffee. Those of us who smoke are shunned and relegated to elevator rides to smoke outside. I stayed during a very cold windy weekend but it was nice out side the cabin. I am very thankful for that.

  • Such a sweet and cozy little cabin in a beautiful country setting. Danielle has thought of everything you could possibly need, and her love of this property shines through. We had a wonderful retreat at the bunkhouse!

  • I truly couldn’t recommend the bunkhouse more highly—it was the absolute perfect getaway for some fresh air, relaxation, and adventure. The property was absolutely beautiful, and the bunkhouse was as cozy and relaxing as could be. Danielle and her family truly go above and beyond to make sure you have all that you need and more, and feel right at home. I will definitely be returning, hopefully several times a year, when theres time for a breather from day-to-day busyness!

    Ashley2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • Our family of 5 had a great time! Super hostess and amazing service ! We will be back next year for sure ! Love the charming and laid back atmosphere! Just what our family needed!

  • If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, Wapsi Bottoms may be just the thing. From Danielle's warm welcome and her thoughtful touches everywhere you turn to the beautiful setting and magnificent trees to the clever conversion of a shed into a delightfully unique home away from home, this is a one-of-a-kind experience. After driving through miles and miles of Iowa corn and soybean fields, Danielle's place comes as a delightful surprise, a secret little oasis. Be ready for simplicity. Quiet. Peacefulness.

    Quin2019-11-08T00:00:00Z
  • Jennifer's place truly is a charming studio apartment! It was very clean with soft towels and bedding. She is such a thoughtful host - there were snacks waiting for us, plus the weather turned very cold that day, and she had extra blankets and the heat ready for us. She was very responsive, and went out of her way to find out more about the Brush Creek Canyon preserve we planned to visit on our stay. Getting to see and feed Laverne and Shirley was a bonus. We - including our dog-child - felt very comfortable and welcomed - and we want to come back to stay!

    Renee2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • This is a lovely place to stay on a quiet street. The house is old style and charming with interesting furniture to compliment the style. The bed was super comfortable and the area was super clean. The hosts live across the street so if you needed something, they were right there; while you still had the place to yourself. Will stay here again since I have family in town.

  • This is a nice country apartment with a great bed and amenities. Snacks and drinks were provided but limited pots and pans made cooking difficult in the ample kitchen area.

  • Jennifer’s communication was awesome throughout our entire trip from beginning to end. Her goats are the cutest ever and such a treat. She and her entire family set up in their barn/recreation area for us to watch the Georgia Bulldogs play football because we are huge Georgia fans. We were there for family weekend in Decorah Iowa at Luther College; I was a little worried about the distance but the short drive was well worth it! We will definitely be back many more times as our son is only in his second year at Luther! We really appreciate everything they did for us. We ended up being later than we anticipated on Friday night and they turned on the air condition for us ahead of time and had everything at the perfect temperature for us to come in and go right to sleep. Great stay!!

Welcome to Trout River Log Cabin, a rustic 19th century Norwegian-built log house nestled in the rolling hills of Northeast Iowa, just seven miles from downtown Decorah, or three from TG Brewing. The cabin is open seasonally from April to October. Our family farm with its many acres of perennial grass fields, timber, and meandering Trout River is absolutely gorgeous. And while you're at it be sure to check out our other overnight stay, Decorah House, located five blocks from downtown Decorah.
The cabin is really special. The walls are rich and textured and the colors are deep and vibrant. Pretty much everything you see, from the beadboard ceilings to the wood floors, were reclaimed from 19th century Norwegian-American log buildings. The cabin is really small and compact and measures just 17'x18'. But it has a functional kitchen, a really nice tiled shower, a mini split heat pump for AC and heating, and a gorgeous view of the Trout River valley. The cabin was built originally in the 1850s as a Norwegian-Lutheran parochial school. Built of old growth oak, walnut, and elm trees, the house feels rich and textured, the product of a different era. In 1898 it was disassembled, moved across a field, and rebuilt as a house by Norwegian immigrant Peter Losen. It remained lived in until the late 1970s and fell into disrepair. In 2007 we disassembled the house, moved it to its present site, and spent three years lovingly restoring it. We warmly welcome you. The cabin comfortably sleeps two. Upstairs is a comfy yet firm queen size bed. Linens and blankets are provided. There is a pullout twin sized bed that can accommodate a third person. The pullout bed is in the same space as the queen bed. Please note the steps to the upstairs are curvy and steep. Take care! On the main level you'll find a small yet totally functional kitchen stocked with all the kitchen supplies you'll need. We also supply fair trade and organic Kickapoo coffee and teas. Also on the main level you'll find comfy arm chairs, a kitchen table, a bookshelf of interesting books, board games, photo albums of the log cabin restoration and information of the surrounding area. The bathroom is on the main floor and the shower is upstairs in the bedroom. Both the bathroom and shower are stocked with organic soaps, shampoo and conditioner. Towels and wash cloths are provided.
Our farm sits seven miles from downtown Decorah. It's a twelve minute drive into town. And we're only three miles from Toppling Goliath. You can bike the gravels there in less than 15 minutes! Our farm sits on the end of a 1/2 mile gravel driveway on the edge of a bluff overlooking Trout River valley. There's a secondary highway about two miles away on the bottom of the valley floor. But other than that it's super private and quiet. The cabin sits about 50 yards from the big house, but is separated by a big windbreak of hundred year old Norwegian spruce.
  • It was perfect for a weekend getaway. Very relaxing and peaceful. We had deer wondering by each morning.

    Curtis2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin was great! Beautiful location! Hike down to the Trout River it is worth it!

  • Another amazing stay at Trout River Log Cabin. Paul is an exceptional and talented individual with a big heart and amazing hospitality. The cabin is so wonderful and relaxing, and any questions you might have Paul answers straight away. The craftmanship and care that have been put into this cabin are so clear in every detail. Heaven!

  • Serene, simple and cozy abode. Perfect place to unwind and relax. Plenty to see and do nearby from hiking to fishing to shopping and more. Really enjoyed getting to know the history of the area at the Vesterheim museum and tour in Decorah. Saw not only the Belted Galloway cows but lots of deer, two bald eagles, heard a barred owl. It was hard to leave. Look forward to visiting the Driftless area again!

    Kim2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at the cabin was perfect! We loved the exterior and interior! Very cozy! It was the perfect location between the downtown and Toppling and Goliath. We loved the gorgeous farm land and surrounding areas. We would definitely recommend this adorable cabin!

    Lauren2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin is beautiful & peaceful. We really enjoyed our relaxing evenings on the porch.

    Travis2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin was gorgeous and we enjoyed our stay. Walking to the river to fly fish was great and there are a lot of trout! It is about a 15 minute walk and the walk back is all up hill, good exercise and through the woods which provides nice shade during this hike. I am extremely picky about the cleanliness of places where I stay and this one was perfectly clean. Our stay was very private and the proximity to town is great, yet you still feel like you’re far away from anywhere. We will be returning again.

    Drew2019-09-03T00:00:00Z
  • This restored cabin overlooks a beautiful pasture and woodland with great views. Nice hike to Trout River and some great fishing spots. Beautifully appointed and cozy cabin. Exceptionally clean. Quiet and peaceful.

  • Check in and out were a breeze! What made this weekend trip and stay at Ashley's place was being able to have our dog along! Also small touches like local beer in the fridge and being extremely close to downtown! We fell in love with the area and definitely plan to visit at least once a year!! Decorah, Iowa is absolutely adorable!

Hygge (pronounced "hoo-ga") is a Danish/Norwegian concept that cannot be translated to one single word but encompasses a feeling of cozy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life. Hygge Haus is a comfortable and cozy one bedroom house close to downtown (0.3 miles to Water St.). Simple yet meeting your needs. A fully functional kitchen and laundry is available for your use.
Hygge Haus is a shotgun house. A "shotgun house" is a narrow rectangular domestic residence, usually no more than about 12 feet (3.5 m) wide, with rooms arranged one behind the other and doors at each end of the house. It was built in 1860. The house was purchased by our family in May 2016 and renovations began. The ceilings were vaulted in the living room and kitchen and a loft was created. The loft is currently inaccessible to guests due to the logistics of getting up there. The house got a new kitchen with a beautiful quartz countertop and new cabinets (which contractors have now painted wrong TWICE). New flooring had to be put in everywhere but the living room which has the original wood floor that was refinished. The basement is not a guest area but guests can seek shelter there in the event of severe weather. The house got a new roof with designer shingles this past spring. A tree was spaded into the backyard and we have been working on adding plants and flowers around the property. We hope you enjoy the transformation this shotgun house received and find contentment and well-being during your stay here.
Hygge Haus resides in one of the first neighborhoods in Decorah.
  • I don't have anything original to add to other reviews, because they are all correct. The Hygge Haus is a great place to stay while exploring Decorah - conveniently located, comfortable and clean. Recommended!

    Lauren2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • Very nice place. Such a small home that is the most personable one bedroom I have stayed in without being an apartment.

    Gene2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • Very cozy and well decorated place! Super close to downtown Decorah, so we got to walk to the sugar bowl more than once. Really neat back yard space as well.

  • Chanda’s home is just the cutest! Check in was a breeze and she was prompt with all communication. We’d definitely stay again!

    Michelle2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • The house was ideal for my wife, infant son, and me! It was a cute and well appointed place that was walkable to everything in downtown Decorah. Chanda went the extra mile and set up a pack and play so we wouldn’t need to bring one on the plane with us from DC. That was so kind of her! Logistically, everything was flawless and easy.

With a great trout stream, small pond with trout, horses and two lovable excited dogs. A perfect place to unwind away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Perfect for fishermen, hunters and those who just want to get away. I highly suggest staying here and will anytime I am in the Decorah area.

Our home is located 5 mi north of Waverly, Iowa near Wartburg College & approx. 25 minutes north of the Univ. of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Easy to find just 1.8 mi. From the Ave. Of the Saints/ Hwy 218. Nestled in a quiet neighborhood near woods and Cedar River. Your private suite has a large living room area with WiFi & convenient kitchenette. The scout-themed bedroom has a queen size sleigh bed. Full bath next door. All the necessities are provided along with a big dose of Iowa niceness.
Our guests have commented that it's the softest bed they have ever slept in. The bathroom is a nice size with a large vanity, shower and tub. There is a heat lamp in the bathroom for those chilly mornings. There's plenty of soap, shampoo, towels, washcloths for you to use. If you forget something, just ask we probably have it. Even PJs. Hey, we've been there. We have a blow up mattress to accommodate 2 more people and the couch can sleep another person. We have plenty of sheets, blankets and pillows. If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing place, this is it. We do have 3 cats, who usually mind their own business. And if you like kitties, a couple of them might become your friends. But if you have allergies, this may not be your place to stay. We have not allowed our cats in this bedroom. In fact, they are not allowed in any of our bedrooms in our home.
Waverly Rail Trail is a great bike trail if you have bikes or want to go for a nice long walk in nature. There are some nice shops in Waverly to check out - The Golden Thistle, Renewed Purpose, Tennebaum's - along with a few good Iowa cookin' restaurants, The Wild Carrot, Water Street Grill, Sasquatch Jack's.
  • My stay was quiet, sparkling clean and cozy as always. It’s also in a great location - close enough to town to be convenient but far enough to feel like you’re “getting away” at the end of the day. I’ll be back soon!

Above all, Kim and Leah were wonderful and kind hosts who made me feel so welcome at their home! I would gladly recommend this stay to anyone.

She provided free transportation during all the stay and at anytime; and gave my mother helpful tips. The room is very cozy, private and extremely clean. Everything is well organized. Many thanks Kim. In a couple of months I will be flying from Sydney to Waverly, no doubt I will be staying at Kim's place.

  • We had a wonderful, memorable stay. We all enjoyed running and walking along quiet gravel roads, star-gazing under dark skies, playing board games and vinyl records, and talking with Mike about life on the farm. Our 5 young adults will always remember this experience! Thanks, Mike and Karin!!

    Debra2019-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • Mike and Karin were excellent hosts, we had some homemade pumpkin bars upon arrival. The unit is spacious and allowed for different bedtimes and morning routines. If you love Iowa, or want an experience of Iowa, stay here! We will definitely be back if we can.

  • Love the charm of this location. The beautiful work on the inside is hiding behind the facade of some old farm buildings. The inside of both buildings were perfect for the family gathering spot. Everything you needed was right there. Sleeping situation worked for us. We loved it. The cows woke us up. The farm fresh air greeted us. It is what I would want for this kind of trip.

    Jack2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Great for kids, there was an air hockey and a foosball table! Cute kitchenette area with ice cream and pizza available for purchase. Our kids also loved feeding the cows and checking out the pigs. Mike was a wonderful host too, I would highly recommend staying here!

    Stephanie2019-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • Northeast Iowa Farm Cottages is a “have to experience “ for every family or farmer at heart! Our 2 year old grand daughters first words every morning were “I have to wake up the cows and piggies”. Living on a working farm was awesome! Mike and Karin were perfect hosts. They thought of everything from a fly swatter to bedtime snacks. The beds - even the bunk beds- were comfortable. It was a big plus that Mike had a pack n play and changing pad for us so we didn’t have to travel with one. Finally, the malt machine was a special added touch we really enjoyed. Thanks Mike and Karin for making our trip so comfortable and unforgettable.

Along the way you'll find numerous coffee shops, restaurants, breweries, shops of all genres and tasting rooms. Although you're within walking distance of 10+ places to eat, if you decide to cook at your home away from home we've provided an oven, microwave, toaster, pots and pans. Any food in the pantry is up for grabs (tea, oatmeal, pasta etc). Many items are available upon request. Need something special? Rather than crowd the apartment, we keep some items off site. You're in an extremely safe neighborhood and building. The police station is 2 blocks away, and a permanent tenant is located next door. Enjoy your private and perfectly located stay!

  • You will be very pleased with the hospitality, kindness, and thoughtfulness of Brittany and her family. So many extra amenities. I had a long-term stay in this space and didn't need a thing--super comfy beds, baking supplies, cooking supplies, toiletries, games, coloring/drawing materials, I could go on and on. Brittany is a wonderful host, and the space has an excellent location in downtown Decorah. I have nothing but rave reviews for this space.

  • Perfect place downtown. Steps from everywhere, short drive to Luther College. The place has a nice atmosphere and was right in the perfect location for what I needed. Brittany was super responsive even though she was out of the country when I visited, and made me feel welcome! If you’re staying in Decorah, check this place out!

The location is excellent for accessing nearly anything in Decorah, particularly the downtown, and served as a comfortable and convenient base while exploring the town. Brittany responded quickly, and was incredibly accommodating. I would happily stay in her place again when visiting Decorah.

This is a large turn of the century home update with open floor plan. It is close to downtown Cedar Falls and is brimming with character. It has a large pet friendly backyard and many amenities at your disposal.
The space you will be sleeping in is pretty small! Since the home was built in 1900 the house is large with lots of character. However, large rooms and bathrooms were not a top priority during that time. You will be sleeping on a twin sized bed and your room has a mini-fridge which you are welcome to! A basket with toiletries in case you forgot something. A keurig coffee maker, WiFi, and a television with access to Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime.
  • Jean was a great host. She was communicative during the post-booking process and when we spoke on my arrival. The upstairs room was spare, but clean and comfy. (Tall guests may choose to book somewhere else, one does notice the ceiling, or rather, the gable when moving around the bed.) Parking is aplenty, and for those that care about that sort of thing, you can see your vehicle from the room. The neighborhood is safe; it is not within walking distance of a gas station or shopping or food, but those amenities are only a five min drive away (if that). I didn’t stay long enough to judge the other aspects of the space, but the dogs are friendly and so is the host and her family. Will stay here again.

  • It was my second stay at Jean’s place and it is my favorite place to stay when I’m visiting my mom in Iowa. Jean and the others offer outstanding hospitality. The room is exactly as described and even had a few beers in the small refrigerator for me! Highly recommended.

Welcome to beautiful Volga Iowa! Roomy space, well kept and perfect as your home base for trout fishing, mushroom hunting, deer hunting, kayaking the Volga or any other activity this beautiful part of the state has to offer. Located on 28 acres with the Volga river running through the property it is serene. HUNTERS this is an ideal location for a home base as well as hunting on site. In late April and early May the mushrooms are everywhere up here!
Attached garage. Originally this property was a turkey farm. It is referred to by old timers as "turkey town". That's what the long sheds are on the property.
Go to Wadena for a Barney Burger, Elkader for a 2 mit burger and a pastry from Pedrettis.
  • Beautiful well kept home. Chris and Kathleen are superb hosts and keep the place spick and span for all visitors. It is very spacious, has a good sized table for sharing a meal or games, and a well furnished kitchen for ease of cooking. Added bonus that their garage is for guest use, so I didn't have to scrape frost off of my car. This home is not the most accessible for those with mobility issues; all entrances to the house are up a set of stairs, however then all amenities are on the same level.

  • The cabin is a great place to get away from it all. Many things to do at the property like fishing, relaxing, watching the wildlife, star gazing, campfires and kayaking. The property is close to other activities as well. About 10 miles to the Volga River Recreational Area, 2 miles from Wadena where you can grab a bite to eat or take a drive and discover downtown Elkader. Andy is a great host and is very helpful when you have questions or need recommendations about the local area. We hope to return soon!

  • Andys A frame cabin overlooks his private pond that is actually well maintained and only getting better with each improvement Andy puts in place. The cabin is brand new with all amnesties needed for a weekend of disconnecting. The wrap around deck has a hammock, rocking chairs, picnic tables and a birds eye view of a little bit of Mother Nature. The fishing is great and there are kayaks to explore the water a little bit more. Overall.... I would recommend this space to others and I would rent again given the opportunity! Thanks again for the hospitality Andy!

  • A beautiful cabin in a secluded location! Andy was a gracious host who provided privacy and yet responded promptly to any questions. The cabin was sparkling clean and very comfortable with just a short ride to town. The wrap around porch is a delightful place to pass the time. Definitely a getaway!

Acorn Cabin sits perched on a lovely family farm just 3 minutes from downtown Decorah. The Cabin is a restored granary dating back to 1912 and has been crafted with love and attention to detail. Perfect for couples and small families. Enjoy this opportunity to stay on a working Icelandic Sheep farm with quiet, peaceful evenings, and glorious views of the surrounding countryside.
Acorn Cabin is a beautifully restored Granary, originally constructed in 1912. Step inside, and you'll be walking on the original fir wood floors. Professionally refurbished in 2009, Acorn Cabin offers a stay in the country with the feeling of history and the comfort of restoration. The Cabin features a lovely 2nd floor bedroom with vaulted ceilings, a cozy sitting area, full kitchen and bathroom with shower. Relax on the Amish built front porch with a view of the pastures. There is also a fully furnished YOGA STUDIO and workout area in a refurbished Milk House - just across the yard - that is available for your use. PRIVATE GOLF DRIVING RANGE - available right here on the property - 300 yards in length, with one free bucket of balls. Bring your golf clubs!!!
Acorn Cabin is one of the last farms on the edge of the south side of town. The setting is peaceful and gorgeous, with lovely out buildings, a stately farmhouse, and beautiful oak trees. You can expect privacy and quiet at Acorn Cabin, with only the workings of the farm and the sheep to keep you company. We live in the restored farmhouse, and after raising our three children here now enjoy the peacefulness of the farm. We are just a short walk away - far enough to give you plenty of privacy, but close enough for easy conversation and assistance with anything you might need.
  • Acorn Cabin is a special place. I went with my adult daughter and relaxed a lot. Also enjoyed Decorah IA, a quaint town with many amenities. Our high light was getting to feed the sheep with Mike and his grandson. The cabin is comfortable and well decorated. We plan to go again!

  • I can’t say enough about Acorn cabin and our wonderful hosts. The cabin is so darling. Everything you could ever need is there. It is so comfortable, clean and tastefully decorated. The location is very close to town but you definitely feel like you are in the country. My granddaughter had a wonderful time with the sheep and Fluffy, the cat. Thank you for everything, Kim! It was delightful and we hope to return.

    Pam2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • Acorn Cabin is a wonderful place to stay. The cabin is perfectly located. My husband and I bliked on the Trout River trail which is just a block from the cabin. Mike and Kim are great hosts!

    Paula2019-10-16T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed a peaceful weekend at Acorn Cabin. The cabin is clean, comfortable, and well outfitted with all the basics we needed and special touches like welcome snacks, fleece bathrobes, throws, and rugs that made for a cozy time on a cold weekend. It was also fun to watch the sheep from the front porch!

    Linda2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • We absolutely loved our stay at the Acorn cabin. The location was perfect, quiet and restful but so close to town and the bike path. The thoughtful touches like candies at the bedside, fresh flowers everywhere and blankets on the porch for chilly evenings were sweet and everything was super clean. We enjoyed watching the sheep and the sunset. Kim was very responsive and knowledgeable to any questions we asked about the area and activities.
