Mermaid Cabin on the Mississippi River

SpencerRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
It was such a cute cabin right on the Mississippi! The view is beautiful! And it’s nice bc you can watch the kids playing on the beach area right from the windows! Also, there were extra blankets and pillows and the fridge was nice and cold. We would definitely stay here again. Don’t pass this one up! She does describe it as more of a glamping type place which she’s right but it was still better than glamping in my opinion. Thank you so much!

Samson's Whitetail Mountain Lakeside Cabin

KaylaRating, 5 stars4 days ago
This place was exactly what we needed! We were looking to get away from home for a couple nights and we're interested in fishing and hiking. We stayed in the lakeside cabin so my kids and husband could fish as much as they wanted! We caught bass and bluegill, but saw a few catfish that were too sneaky! Saw lots of wildlife including turtles, deer, buffalo, elk, donkeys and a zebra! The location was close enough to all of our hiking destinations. We did Garden of the God's on our way to the cabin, then did Ferne Clyffe State Park and Jackson Falls (both about 30 minutes from the location). Loved that they are pet friendly so my pup could come along for the adventure. We would recommend staying here and would definitely be interested in staying again!

H & B's...Come experience the magic of nature!

ThadRating, 5 stars1 month ago
Billy's place was just what we needed for our stay for the street machine nationals. It was about 5 minutes out of town in a secluded wooded setting that was quite and peaceful. The cabin had everything we needed and Billy left provisions for breakfast that included fresh eggs, butter, bread coffee, and granola. We loved the screened in porch for setting and eating breakfast in the mornings. The only downfall is now the wife wants a screened in porch LOL. I would like to thank Billy for opening his beautiful property up for us to stay at, and if we ever need a place in southern Illinois again it will be my first place to see if it's available. Thanks again Billy

This cabin, Eva's Roost, was the perfect getaway from city life. Bonnie was friendly and generous, while also giving us space for a peaceful visit. Cobden is a short drive for fun shopping at the Village Shops and a tasty breakfast at the Iron Whisk. Better yet, Bonnie's Airbnb is within 30 minutes of some of the best nature spots in the region. Kim's house is curated with lovely pieces of art and furniture that is very comfortable. I'm seriously amazed at the attention to detail through out the house. i enjoyed the hot tub while I admired her annuals on their plantars. The kayaks were so much fun and relaxing. And after a fun-filled day of hikes and other adventures sleeping on the comfortable beds renewed us for more fun. Kim is very polite and communicates very well. She is great host with a great property that makes us want to return.

I’ve been coming here since 2018 and it is my absolute favorite getaway from the business of the city. Comfortable furniture and bed, kitchenette is well stocked with supplies, and the rain shower is such a nice treat!! My dogs absolutely love running around the property with all the smells, woods to explore, and the river & lake to swim in. I could go on and on….its never goodbye, it’s see you next time!

Peaceful Cottage Retreat

TinaRating, 5 stars1 month ago
The cottage was such a great find! Joan sent detailed directions on getting to the cottage that were perfect (being the house is on a country road you might not be sure the GPS is taking you the right way, so Joan’s details really helped.) The area is quiet and beautiful and the cottage is exactly as it is pictured! We came to the area to run a marathon on the Tunnel Hill Trail and staying at the cottage was just perfect for us. The bed and bedding were so comfortable! Even though the cottage is located behind the main residence, we never heard or saw anyone. It was quiet and private. If we ever make it back to Vienna we will definitely stay at the cottage again.

This was the perfect peaceful getaway. The site was beautiful and felt like home right away. The sleeping tent was clean, sturdy, and comfortable. The bathroom setup was better than expected—hot water, clean toilet, and great shower. We spent most of our time relaxing by the fire pit, listening to birds and rustling trees, and taking in the view. Everything was just as described, if not better. Would gladly return!

Lake Living

KellyRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
We had a wonderful stay to celebrate our son’s Gotcha Day. Having the lake in your backyard was both relaxing and fun. The canoe was used every day. The house had so many little “treasures” to look at. And no matter where you looked, there were signs telling you to relax. We really enjoyed everything. We have stayed at many properties over the years and Bell is one of the best hosts we have had. We plan on coming back.

Your guide to Illinois

All About Illinois

Known as the Prairie State and once home to one of the United States’ most popular presidents, Illinois has a rich and complex history, from epic explorers to kingpins of the Prohibition-era. This is a state full of stories to tell. Chicago’s towering cityscape on the edge of Lake Michigan, sporting heritage, and plethora of museums draw the eye, but beyond the city limits lie huge canyons, rock climbing parks, and Amish communities.

Visitors head here to cruise world-famous Route 66, spend time at the ballpark with a classic baseball snack, and get out into the fresh air of Illinois’ swathes of fertile fields where corn grows as far as the eye can see in some areas. On the western side of the state, you’ll see steamboats meander past and charming river towns for miles along the Mississippi River, while the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site sits on the Missouri border preserving the largest prehistoric city in North America.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Illinois

The ideal time to travel through the state of Illinois is late April to late October when temperatures are moderate. Other times of the year can be more extreme and involve rain, snow, or humid heat. Visitors do come during the winter, but there tend to be fewer arrivals due to Chicago’s bitter temperatures in particular. If you’re heading here after the fall, be sure to pack plenty of warm layers and have travel plans in place for likely snowfall. Spring and summer months are popular times to explore scenic city parks and the state’s peaceful lake and river-studded scenery — Chicago alone boasts 29 miles of lakefront. Cabin rentals in Illinois are also the perfect jumping off point for grabbing a kayak and exploring the Lake Katherine Nature Center on sunny days.

Top things to do in Illinois

The Leaning Tower of Niles

Less than half an hour’s drive out of Chicago, discover a little piece of Italy hidden in the unassuming village of Niles. In 1991, Italy established a sister pact with this tower, a smaller homage to the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. Every day, the bells ring out traditional country tunes to enjoy in the surrounding streets.

Writers Theater

Founded in 1992, the Writers Theater in Chicago’s North Shore district has been putting on shows of all sizes and genres for guests from all over the world for decades. Adding a creative twist to classic works, this community theater welcomes over 65,000 guests every year for engaging entertainment.

Riding a riverboat in Peoria

Leave dry land for a while on a leisurely paddlewheel cruise along the riverside. Spend a few hours sightseeing and wildlife-spotting, or take an overnight trip to Starved Rock for the full experience with live banjo performances, indulgent buffets, and rushing waterfalls if you arrive at Starved Rock State Park in the spring.
