Listing highlights

Park for free

This is one of the few places in the area with free parking.
Madho Bhawan is one of the two houses that comprise a family owned hotel in Mussoorie. The other house is called Raghu Niwas. Both houses were built in the 1890s. The family that owns the houses has lovingly restored the houses and has opened them up for people to stay when they are not using it themselves. Enjoy the unique privilege of staying in a genuinely historic home where every brick and tile speaks of years of family holidays, laughter, love and togetherness.

The space
This listing is for Madho Bhawan and is for one of the suites on the first floor. There is one other suite and a double room on the same floor. All 3 rooms open out into a glazed verandah that runs the length of the building. The rooms are interconnected but have private bathrooms. Each room also has an independent entrance though the back rooms entrance leads to the back of the house and is a one needs to go round the house to come out to the main entrance. The suite opens into the bright and sunny verandah that is a space where you are likely to spend your whole day. At the end of the verandah is a cozy dining room and lounge, that can be used by all our guests, where a tea and coffee service with cookies is always available. This is where breakfast is laid out and if you plan to have meals at home, they will be served here. Use the garden to sit out during the day or night. If its a cold evening, request us for a bonfire that we will organise for you at whatever the cost of wood is in that season – it fluctuates madly in Mussoorie so we don’t like to give a fixed price!

Guest access
Guests can use the gardens of Raghu Niwas and Madho Bhawan and explore the entire 3 acre property. We find that guests who stay in one house, generally prefer their own garden but we like to offer them the option. Both houses have their own driveways and guest entrance for cars but a path connects the two houses. Guests of Raghushree can be adventurous and climb the hill that is part of the property and experience their own private and dense pine forest. Of course, be careful of the monkeys that live there!

Other things to note
While in Mussoorie, manage your time so that you spend a little time in the house. We often get people who come to see Raghu Niwas, one of the Hotel Raghushree houses as a tourist attraction and you will be living right next to it. No other hotel in Musssoorie town has the gardens and grandeur that Raghushree has, so take some time to enjoy it. Don't miss the view of the lights of Dehradun at night. They look like a sea of stars from where you stand. Since the place is run as a hotel, service is available so feel free to use it. The manager can let you know the prices of food, laundry, bonfires etc.

While Wifi is available, the service provider is BSNL, the state-owned telecom company. It is erratic and service requests are not attended to very promptly. 3G signal is good, however and you can use your own data plan quite effectively.

Neighborhood highlights

The building is located on a hill, above the Masonic Lodge and what use to be the Picture Palace Bus Stop. The bus stop moved away about 10 years ago but continues to be a landmark. Mussoorie has two entries and the fork in the road to Library or Picture Palace is at Kincraig, 2 km short of Mussoorie. For Raghushree you need to take the Picture Palace fork, that is on right. Library side is where you would go if you were going to the Academy (IMA), Kempty Falls or Company Bagh. Picture Palace is where you would go if you were going to Kulri Bazaar, Camels Back Road, Landour, Woodstock, Wynbergallen or Lal Tibba.

I am one of the siblings of a large family that co-owns this ancestral property in Mussoorie. I have listed both the houses that we own in Mussoorie that are run as a hotel, called Hotel Raghushree. I am retired now and my daughter helps me run the place. The houses are two British-era bungalows that were built by my grandfather. I think they were built before 1900 but definitely before 1910.
Raghu Niwas is one of the houses that is featured in the profile picture and the other house is Madho Bhawan. I live in Delhi but visit Mussoorie often. I have spent many many years of summer holidays in these houses and so has my large extended family. So these are genuine heritage, family holiday homes!
