Built into the rock face of Mont Subasio, our apartment has all the romance of a medieval farmhouse, with modern features to make your holiday a memory of a lifetime.

The space
Nestled off Piazza Antonio Gramsci, at the end of Via Gramsci (one of Spello’s famous laneways), the apartment is as tranquil as it is picturesque – while still being conveniently located close to the centre of town.

Carefully and respectfully renovated to retain its Medieval Umbrian heritage, Il Muretto, also provides modern conveniences, including CENTRAL HEATING, AIR CONDITIONING, COFFEE MACHINE, DISHWASHER, SMART TV and FAST WIFI. Renovations to the apartment included modern heat controls and plenty of power points including USB plugs for your convenience in every room.

The apartment sits high above the neighbours and the traditional windows in each room provide sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.

ENTRANCE and KITCHEN
Retaining its medieval vaulted ceilings and original brickwork, the entrance way leads you back in time.
A coat and boot rack keeps the clutter away. The glass doorway provides light and space in to the kitchen area to keep any chef happy. Plenty of cooking equipment is available to prepare meals on the gas hob and electric oven. There’s a large fridge/freezer, coffee machine and kettle for hot beverages and, of course, a dishwasher. The small seating area means the chef need never be lonely.

COMBINED DINING/LIVING ROOM
A huge room which features three spacious sofas, an 80cm Smart TV and a large family dining table which expands to seat 8. One sofa converts into a double bed.
The feature of the apartment and the reason for its name is the back wall of this room, which is the exposed rock face of Mount Subasio, including a small cave. Your imagination can determine the use of the cave but it is currently convenient for wine storage.

BEDROOM ONE
A double bed awaits guests, with adequate storage space and places to hang your garments. The bedroom includes a small safe for valuables. Independent air-conditioner/heater provides personalized temperature control.

BEDROOM TWO
Two single beds which can be stacked if bunk beds are preferred by the little ones. Independent air-conditioner/heater provides personalized temperature control. Let your imagination run wild while admiring the vaulted ceiling with original hooks and rings used during daily farm life in bygone times.

BATHROOM
Features a shower with a rain-shower head, toilet, bidet and sink. Heated towel rails contribute to the inviting feeling of the room and practical details such as shampoo, conditioner and a hairdryer add to the convenience. Storage space is also provided for your personal items.

WASHING MACHINE and DRYER
The apartment has an accessible washing machine and dryer available for longer stays.

Guest access
Guests have the use of the entire apartment, including a terrace shared with our other apartment. The terrace overlooks the valley and has plenty of seating where you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast, a meal or glass of local wine.

Neighborhood highlights

The charming village of Spello is nestled on the lower slopes of Mount Subasio in the heart of Umbria - the green heart of Italy. This picture perfect old Roman village is known for its meandering cobble stone paths with colourful flowers decorating its homes for all to see.

The meandering laneways of this remarkably well preserved Roman and Medieval stone village are decorated with brightly coloured flowers from May to September, but even during Winter there are always sights and smells to delight. Spello is enclosed in a circuit of medieval walls on Roman foundations, including three Roman Late Antique gates (Porta Consolare, Porta di Venere and the "Arch of Augustus") and traces of three more, it boasts the remains of an amphitheater, as well several medieval gates and the recently uncovered Roman Villa of Sant'Anna, with its impressive mosaic floors.

The beauty of the flowers and ambiance of Spello can be appreciated all year around. In June, however the village is alight as the residents of Spello celebrate Corpus Christi with the laying of intricate flowered carpets in the streets; The Infiorata. The petals for the carpets are collected and dried by hand in the months leading up to the Infiorata, then laid with painstaking care the night before, resulting in an amazing display of carpets and floral paintings that wind through the streets of the historic centre, intended to honor the passage of the Body of Christ, carried in procession by the bishop on Sunday morning.

If you’re not fortunate enough to be in Spello for the Infiorata there are also weekly markets held in the village’s piazza, a photography exhibition in September, Olive Oil festivals held twice a year, between December and January and May to June, and a month long event, Incontri per le Strade (Meeting in the Streets), where the arts of Spello are showcased in August. There is also as a festival, Hispellum, celebrating the Roman heritage of the town held in August. The centre of Spello is home to many wonderful restaurants and bars, two small food stores, a bakery, a wine store, a pharmacy, a post office and piazzas to sit and wile away the hours.

The many medieval churches of Spello are an architectural delight. The oldest, S. Maria Maggiore, is full of precious paintings by Perugino and Pinturicchio. Walking trails lead those keen to explore through the olive groves to either Assisi or Collepino (a lovely little village further up the mountain).

Spello makes an ideal base for exploring the region. The fabulous wineries of Monefalco are only a 20min drive away; Assisi, the birthplace of Sant Francis is a 10min drive, or short train ride; Marmore Falls, a man-made waterfall created by the ancient Romans (the tallest man-made waterfall in the world) can be reached by car in 50 min; Perugia, the capital of Umbria is accessible by car or train; Lake Trasimeno, the largest lake in Central Italy and fourth among the Italian lakes after Lake Como is only 45 min away. There are many other historic towns to discover nearby and Siena, Florence and Rome are all within 2 hours of Spello
