Places to stay in Kukuihaele
At the heart of Hawaii is a lush tropical paradise beyond compare. The Cliffhouse is a custom built cottage, overlooking the majestic Waipio Valley. Nestled into a bamboo forest, completely emersed in a garden of flowers. Includes fireplace & jacuzzi
Tucked away in a hidden paradise, we offer our charming cottage. Immersed in a plethora of plants, flowers, and amazing views, it is the perfect "get-away" spot. You'll find yourself situated on the cliffs above the majestic Waipio Bay. From the home, you have wide open views of the Kohala Cliffs, a 17 mile view up the coast to Pololu Point, and a 50 mile view across the sea to the Beautiful island of Maui. We are proud to be able to share a bit of "Old Hawai'i" with our beautiful hidden oasis. The home is private. The home is equipped with WIFI, a DVD/CD plaver and a flat screen TV. There is a covered carport connected to the cottage, there are three covered long (very minimal incline) steps that lead from carport to the front porch. The home has a big Jacuzzi tub with views of the Ocean and Maui. The cottage has a big yard and there are lovely garden areas with flowers, herbs and fruit trees. There is also a two person swing to enjoy. We offer complete privacy in this tropical paradise, but we can be found conveniently located only a short distance away whenever assistance is needed. The small historic village of Kukuihaele offers 2 art galleries and is the starting spot for over half a dozen great Tours. A short walk through the village brings you to Waipio Valley lookout, where you may choose a wonderful hiking experience down into the valley, or opt to take the shuttle tour down and get a wonderful guided narrative about the valley's amazing history. Waipio is home to an amazing mile long black sand beach, a double 1200ft waterfall, and one of the few places lucky enough to boast that still has herds of Wild horses. You may take a fun Horseback tour or Mule wagon tour in the valley as well.
The cottage is centrally located between Hilo and Kona. Conveniently located near ATV tours, Horsebacking, Ziplining, Hiking Tours, Helicopter tours and other fun activities. There are many great "must see" businesses in the area such as the "Hamakua Mushroom farm", producing amazing specialty Mushrooms, The Paul Mitchell's "Awapuhi" farm growing awaphui gingers for silky shampoo, or "Hawaii Vanilla Company" which just happens to be the only producing vanilla farm in the US. Our charming one street historic town of Honokaa is a must see as well. Don't forget to spend a day exploring the Valley!
  • We've stayed here twice and will come back - this is a magical place and is tops on our list of all the best places to stay in Hawaii...

  • Spectacular location, lovely cottage, lots of privacy. Very close to the wonderful Waipio valley. One can spend days just enjoying the view and the tranquility of Kristan‘s cottage, on the lawn, the terrace, the sofa - or in the bath tub. Highly recommended.

  • This place is where you want stay if you are in the area.

  • Spectacular and private location ! Gardens beautiful . Soaking tub amazing with lots of hot water. Unexpectedly we enjoyed the fireplace on a couple cool rainy evenings. Everything worked well . Nice walk to Waipio Viewpoint. We would stay again !

  • Kristen’s place is spectacular. The views are unforgettable and the house is comfortable and stylish with lots of great touches. The kitchen is well equipped and the garden is lush with seating in wonderful places to make sure you get the view from a variety of angles. The community is friendly, the old town laid back and the walks pretty special. It’s an absolute treat to stay here.

  • A real hidden gem! This place is quiet, secluded, interesting and views beyond beautiful! If you want a unique experience, I highly recommend this space! Perfect for a romantic couple getaway!

    Dahdri2020-01-22T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful space to rest, relax, renew, rinse, repeat. The only warning: you will want to stay in the space a few days and simply gaze out at the amazing view, so add extra days for chilling and gazing. You'll come with a busy itinerary that will dissolve once you enter the space. Remember...I warned you.

    Jennifer2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • 10 out of 10! The photos do not do this place justice, it’s better in person. Wait until you see this place, amazing! The views are spectacular. Check in was incredibly easy and the instructions were accurate. The bed was super comfortable as we have found previous AirBnB’s in Hawaii to be incredibly soft and too soft for our liking so this was just perfect. Waking up to those views from the bed is something you won’t forget. We cooked every night and the kitchen functions very well! We did use the tub both nights and found the jets didn’t work however it didn’t bother us at all as bathing by those views is what relaxation is all about. The hot water worked well and I would highly recommend this place. I would definitely stay again but I would stay longer next time!!! We didn’t want to leave. Mahalo

Here is a great opportunity to see, hike and enjoy the Waipio Valley. The rustic one bedroom one bath Ohana attached the the Wapio Valley Art Gallery gives you the opportunity to check out their wonderful souvenirs, book all the activities.
This rental gives you the opportunity to save some money but be in a comfortable safe one bedroom one bath rental and spend some of your hard earned bucks on all the various tours at a discount for staying in this rental.
The quaint Village was once a Sugar Care area where families lived, loved and harvested the cane. Some of those family still live there today.
  • This little bungalow had a 70s vintage vibe, we loved it! Nice to have a kitchen, bathroom and shower all in one! We went on the Waipio valley tour provided by the gallery, it far exceeded our expectations🙌👌👏. The tour takes you into this magical valley only 4wd vehicles can roam, the tour also takes you past where hikers are allowed to explore. Our guide kalenai was super phenomenal, highly recommend! We loved this little town and the farmers markets are near in town and also in Waimea. Comfy bed, hot water, much kindness from the locals 👏🙌🌈🏝

  • This was a great value, cosy and sweet. Taking a quiet walk at sunrise to the Waipio Valley Lookout was lovely. We look forward to returning.

  • We were cycling the island and wanted a place to regroup. We didn’t need external amenities - just a quiet place to hang out. We also wanted to explore Waipio Valley without being rushed. Bill’s place more that met our requirements. The ladies at the art gallery were so sweet and the availability of a morning coffee was a welcome treat. Bill was always attentive and most welcoming. You can’t go wrong with this place!

    George2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • This is a gem of a place. Pictures don’t do it justice. It’s a good size private and comfortable...a stones throw from the beautiful waipio valley and just behind an art store that sells finely crafted local art and jewelry. The town of Honoka’a is close for night outings. Great place to stay!!!

    Dawn2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • Great location, clean, with everything we needed for our stay. Bill was an excellent host.

    Russell2019-12-31T00:00:00Z

This is a cozy private guest studio apartment with private entrance, private bath and a newly constructed outdoor cooking area. We offer beautiful ocean views in quiet peaceful Kukuihaele Village. Located less than 1 mile from beautiful Waipio Valley "the valley of kings" and 8 miles from the historic plantation town of Honoka'a. You shall be hosted by the gracious Buzz and Adelina Speetjens.
The room is most comfortable for a single person or a couple. The room does have a queen size sofa bed that can accommodate additional children or adults (the room does get a little crowded when the couch is pulled out). Our home has numerous fruit trees (Macadamia nuts, mango, oranges, tangerines, guava, bananas, pears lychee, figs, mountain apples, tangelo, lemons, limes, mango, avocado, dragon fruit) and our guest are always welcome to stroll through our orchard and help themselves to whatever in season and ripe. Within a very short walk are located two magnificent art galleries and gift shops . A county park with pavilion and rest rooms and children's play ground is only 200 yards down the road.

  • We had a great stay. The owners are very friendly and welcoming. Everything was clean. The view was amazing and we even have picked our own fruit from the garden.

    Jolanda2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • Great views, comfortable accommodations, Adelina was very nice and allowed us to pick tangerines right in front of the place, how cool is that!

    Jonathan2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • Adelina was very friendly and welcoming, the place was very clean and had every amenity you might need (she even provided coffee and oranges from her trees). The views were spectacular and you can’t get much closer to the Waipio valley! Overall a very lovely spot to stay - would definitely stay again!

  • Amazing place!! The view and location were superb, walking distance from the Waipo Valley overlook. Wonderful outdoor kitchen and fruit trees in the yard. Could not get over the view. Do yourself a favor and stay here if you are in the area!

    Cindy2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • Nice apartment with private entrance as part of a family home. Beautiful yard/orchard with amazing views of the ocean. Very convenient for someone exploring Waipio Valley. About 1 mile (maybe less) from the lookout. We saw an amazing sunset from the back patio while enjoying fresh picked tangerines from the trees in the yard. Highly recommend!

This magnificent 4.5 acre permaculture organic orchard retreat sits back on 750' cliff above Waipio Valley, and looks to the ocean open to almost 150 degrees of ocean an rugged coastline. Epic views of1000' cliffs. 3 cottages to choose from. No children under 6.
**Click on the small picture to the right to see more photos!! Between 2012 and 2013 Hale Kukui has received lots of positive recognition. The Lonely Planet travel guide said, 'These three tranquil and secluded cottage/units all have wonderful views and pleasing decor, but the perspective of Waipi'o from the detached cottage may make you forget your name.' Southeby's international real estate magazine cover photo features the view from the property. HGTV and Aloha Magazine did features on this unique property as well in 2013. See recommendations on Trip Adviser as well. Organic permaculture orchard, 3 cottages and caretaker's house sits back on 750' cliff above Waipio Valley, and looks to the ocean Southeast, North and Northwest up the undeveloped rugged coastline. Sometimes there are a multitude of waterfalls seen cascading down 1000' cliffs into the sea. Gaze at lush greenery, frequent rainbows, especially during the wet season (Winter/Spring). Epic views face 23 miles of these 1000' cliffs, backed up by undeveloped jungle. Whales jumping and breaching can be seen from the property during the winter/spring. Maui is visible on clear days. The area boasts a perfect climate of just enough rain to keep the streams going and the flowers blooming, cool trades off the ocean, and a daytime year-round temperature of between 70 and 85 degrees, with cooler nights. The property is landscaped with a vast variety of exotic trees, ferns, orchids, palms, flowering shrubs and exotic fruits to pick. We are in the early stages of growing Vanilla, Cocoa, black sapote (Chocolate pudding tree), Cashew and Macadamia nut trees. Try our fully mature(when in season) hamakua coast coffee beans, mangoes, mangosteens, avocados, pomelo, Jackfruit, papaya, passion fruit, soursop, breadfruit, rambutan, lychee nuts, starfruit, Brazilian cherries, jaboticaba, cherymoya, mountain apples, true cinnamon, cloves, Miracle berries, a variety of citrus, bananas and much more grown on the property. Walk out to the point for one of the best views on the island. Walk along the cliff's edge/ocean path or explore the path through bamboo. Both short easy walks take you to an opening on the picturesque lawn going down to the cliff's edge. Take another short steep path (for sturdy feet only) past the Banyan tree and passion fruit vines into the gulch on our property. Listen to the peaceful sounds of the Waiulili Stream and our waterfall running through the property and then over a 650' cliff. Waipio Lookout is 1/2 mile away. Ocean and waterfall views. Enjoy the peace and privacy of your own suite complete with private outdoor soak tubs. Explore the quaint town of Honoka'a 10 minutes away with theater, restaurants, several quaint shops featuring locally made goods, outdoor farmers market, gas, groceries and a hospital/clinic. No children under 6
Staying at Hale Kukui is an ecoadventure and an end destination in itself! It is also a great jump off point for other destinations! This epic property is unique for its historically important location, for its short paths, private nooks, exotic organic orchard, unmatched views and size/character of property. Overview of the neighborhood: Old Hawaii meets modern conveniences, safe, private, lush natural beauty and most of the comforts of home. If you are able to pull yourself away to see other parts of the island, Hale Kukui is a great stepping stone to the whole island. Walk or drive 1.5 miles to the black sand beach down a 25% grade road or 1/2 mile to Waipio lookout. Walk 1/4 mile to get island made ice cream at the Art Store. Its an easy 10 minute drive to the farmer's market in Honoka'a where there are restaurants, several quaint shops featuring locally made goods and Malama Market for groceries. Try local ride the rim, surfing, biking, helicopter tours of Waipio Valley, horseback, hiking, camping and enjoy the longest black sand beach in Hawaii below the property. Drive to Hawaiian cowboy country in Waimea and you may smell eucalyptus on your way to the cooler climate in Waimea (Kamuela). Here there is more shopping, fast food chains, a bigger hospital and some of the best food in the islands is here (only 30 minutes away).Several restaurants to choose from Go to Merriman's for the best seafood and Kailua pork quesadillas. Drive over to the white sand beaches about 35minutes from Waimea, the 5 star hotels and high end shopping of the southwest coast. Otherwise drive east along the lush Hamakua coast, see Akaka falls, the world famous botanical gardens, Hilo, Volcanoes National park, Natural hot springs in Pahoa. Take the saddle road between Hilo and Waimea and drive to the 14,000 top of Mauna Kea along the way (many countries have their space observatories there). Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world from the sea floor. Visit Kona and see if you think the preferred coffee of the white house is really as good as the lesser locally known rich tasting Hamakua coast coffee. Hale Kukui grows small amounts of its own and while we don't dry and roast it, you are welcome to try. Hilo has a great outdoor market, shopping, surfing, etc. and it is a beautiful 1 hour drive along the Hamakua coast. Another hour or so beyond is the must see Volcanoes National Park and swim in the hot springs in Pahoa.. Kona is about 1.5 hours away along very nice highways as are most places. The whole island has so much to offer but you will definitely want to relax at Hale Kukui for its incredible views and natural private surroundings. Each cottage has its own kitchen/kitchenette, internet and full bathroom.
  • This place has a wonderful and totally private back deck with a full view of the Pacific and towering headlands and waterfalls to the west. Walk out through the orchard to a bench over the cliff and the view is even better. The space is very comfortable and Paula and Dan are excellent hosts. Highly recommended!

    Patrick2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great place for an extended stay. Paula & Dan are super hosts, very helpful and informative. The view is #1 of any place we have stayed! At first it may seem a bit isolated but that is part of the charm and attraction. Honoka’a is big enough as a local community base, Waimea is near enough, and all of the Big Island’s superior sites and experiences are reachable. You should be prepared to do some driving but that is to be expected on Hawaii. Geckos were amusing, great entertainment on the deck - from which the views are gorgeous during the day and marvelously starlit at night.

    Tom2020-01-29T00:00:00Z
  • Staying at Hale Kukui was definitely a highlight of our trip. The Orchard Cottage was well maintained and had all the supplies we needed. We enjoyed being in the nature and of course marvel at the amazing view! Paula and Dave are great hosts, always proving help if needed.

    Essi2020-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • This place is well described and we had a great week here. It is a long ways to anywhere else on the Island, but a great place to be. We loved the view and morning coffee watching the stars from the deck. Lots of fresh fruit to pick and eat, yum. The bed was big and comfortable and we slept better than we ever have on vacation. Lots of privacy. Walking from here is a little rigorous, but worth it. We did not make it to the nearest beach on foot.

    William2019-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • Awesome views, great off the beaten path location. Prefect middle to our three stop week plus stay on the Big Island!

    Michael2019-12-13T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful cottage with everything needed for two people. It was spotlessly clean and had all the amenities we needed for a nice stay. It’s remote and in the jungle so lots of birds and lush plants around. The only downside for us was that it rained every day, but that was something they did warn us about for the area esp. in winter. Paula and Dan were great hosts, brought tropical fruit from the gardens to us, and overall made it a great stay.

    Jhenya2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful, wonderful place!! Every morning we woke up to the most beautiful view of the ocean and cliffs. In the evenings, we enjoyed the view of the stars from the soaking tub on the lanai. We loved that it isn’t a huge tourist spot so we got lots of privacy and were able to explore the beautiful landscape! We especially enjoyed eating fresh exotic fruit every morning from the orchard outside. Paula and Dan are very friendly and super helpful! They showed us a secret swimming hole just by the Airbnb. There are geckos that sneak in, but we expected this after reading other reviews. They didn’t bother us at all and nostalgia stuck to the walls. We thought they were cute; plus they eat the bugs! If your looking for a beautiful place to stay with out the crowds and tourism this is it! We were able to drive to the different sides of the island to do some Tourism too. We hope to come back!!

    Becca2019-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • This is our second time staying at Hale Kukui, and it was every bit as magical as the first. We love love love this place and hope to stay here many more times. Nothing beats the bathtub on the Lanai. Personally I think this view and the decor is a bit better than the other unit we stayed in last time. Of course the hosts are wonderful and provide amazing hospitality. They allowed us to store our vehicle on the property while we hiked the muliwai trail for three days after our reservation ended. We highly highly recommend this incredible experience.

It’s not a 5-star hotel (beds squeak a bit and mattresses aren’t the newest). But we knew that. The location is idyllic. We would love to go again and will if we get the chance!

    Christine2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • Breathtaking views!

    Shannon2020-01-31T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at Paula and Dan's place. The place is incredible, very roomy, and you can't beat the view of Waipio Valley from the lanai. The outdoor soaking tub was wonderful to stargaze from, and the sounds of the tropical birds at night was fantastic. Paula provided us with lots of fruit (avocado, oranges, lemons) from the orchard which was really a wonderful touch. I recommend this place highly! But to any light sleepers, I recommend bringing earplugs as the tin roof and evening rains can be pretty loud and might make falling asleep very difficult.

    Breanna2020-01-10T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful property and the view of the waterfalls right from the garden was amazing. The fruits from the trees are all delicious and we enjoyed all the citrus fruits. Kitchen is basic and had everything we needed for 2 days of cooking. What we didn’t find in the kitchen (oil) was supplied by Paula. Thanks for everything Paula

    Radhika2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • This is the perfect spot for nature lovers. The views out the cabins are breathtaking. And you can’t beat the fresh fruit from the orchard. I would highly recommend for a relaxing getaway.

    Kathleen2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • The view is just out of this world! Comfortable and lovely. Coffee and fruit supplied which is a lovely touch!

    Emma2019-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • What an amazing location. Most of the resorts on the big island spend a lot of money to create a very artificial environment. The Waipio Valley is the real deal.

    Waipiʻo Lodge
The Waipi'o Lodge is located in the quaint village of Kukuihaele, less than a mile from majestic Waipiʻo Valley. In a place where horses and wild turkeys often wander by, this is the old Hawaiʻi. A place where neighbors are welcoming and life is sweet as the smell of sugar cane grass. You'll enjoy the wonderful ocean view and many fruit and macadamia nut trees on the property. We enjoy the best weather on the island- not hot like Kona, not rainy like Hilo, not cold like Waimea… just perfect!! It’s also a central location for exploring the Hilo and Kona sides of the island. Just 10 minutes away is the lovely town of Honokaʻa, with farmers markets, antique shops, restaurants, and the coolest old movie theater in the world. Our three guest rooms are simple, yet nicely decorated, clean, with great beds. Guests share a bathroom, outdoor patio and living room with high speed Wi-Fi, couches, cable TV, microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator, and grill. We are a "green" facility which is cleaned and laundered with non-toxic cleaning products. Guests may also pick ripe fruit from the yard. We usually have all the fruit you can eat! (Tangerines, macadamia nuts, guava, avocados, bananas…) Our guests tend to be excellent company, usually visiting from Europe, the US Mainland, Asia, Australia and beyond. The Waipʻo Lodge Kalo Room is the coolest room in the house. Its windows allow the mountain breeze to flow through, but no direct sunlight. The house itself is an authentic “plantation home” built in 1922 and oozing with character. These walls have stories to tell! My wife and I live upstairs with our 3 children as your hosts. So the disclaimer is: you can sometimes hear small footsteps from upstairs. If you are not looking for total quiet and enjoy interacting with other travelers in the simple beauty of the Hamakua Coast, this is your place. We run an outdoor education program for teenagers (Hawaii Outdoors Institute) and are very knowledgeable about hiking in Waipi’o, Waimanu and other outdoor adventures. Many people use the Lodge as a launching point for hiking trips. Join us!!
  • We were welcomed very kindly and the location of the accommodation is very quiet and beautiful with a great view of the sea. The house is very noisy, but it didn't bother us. :) We would definitely book the accommodation again and recommend it, we didn't miss anything!

  • Greg was very nice. He was very prompt with replies and his directions were spot on. We were welcomed in and felt very comfortable. I would definitely stay there again and recommend it to my friends.

  • Great stay if you are exploring the waipio valley. Greg was very nice and helpful. Room was very clean and the living space was excellent. Bed was huge in the room I was in.

  • It‘s an really nice accomodation. Verry enjoyful, you can relax at the whole time. There are a lot of nice details. The host is also very friendly.

    Jana2020-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • We had a very peaceful stay here. Greg was such a kind and thoughtful host. The room we stayed in was simple, but very comfortable and perfect for a night of rest and relaxation before a long and arduous backpacking trip down to Waimanu Valley. Also, there was a tree with delicious tangerines that Greg so graciously let us pick from. We will definitely try to stay here again if we’re ever back in the area!

    Steve2020-01-30T00:00:00Z
  • This place was pretty magical. The outdoor kitchen was lovely, and coffee, cooking oil, and some basic spices were provided. The shared spaces meant that we got to interact with people from all over the world!

    Elizabeth2020-01-29T00:00:00Z
  • Very close from Waipio valley the location is ideal for nature lovers! Very good bed! Everything is very convenient kitchen and everything! Recomended!!

  • Communication was smooth! The location was perfect! The place it self was amazing! The pictures don’t do it justice! I would definitely come back & stay here!

    Kassandra2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • What a wonderful experience. It took me a while to write this review, and I still know I can’t do it justice. Cynthia’s place is the perfect balance of everything necessary to create value. Do not wait to book her place. We stayed at four different locations. This is the one that was better than expected. The view was great, as pictured. It’s the inside of the house and guesthouse, and Cynthia’s incredible hospitality that surprised me. The furniture and art pieces in the main house are unique- I enjoyed seeing them. The bed was the most comfortable one we stayed in. The guesthouse we stayed in was adequately private since it had a separate entrance. Everything was clean. Perhaps best of all, Cynthia herself. I am quite introverted, as is my partner, but we both absolutely loved our time with her. We didn’t plan to interact much, but interacting with her may have been one of the highlights of our trip.

    Kat2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time at the Waipio Rim House! The host cooks breakfast in the morning, and it's delicious! 2 minute walk from Waipio Valley and the view is better than advertised.

    Seth2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • Super room with a nice king size bed sooo confortable. The view of the back yard was amazing. We can see the Waipio valley!! We saw whales in the morning. It was our last night so we had to leave early but I bet the breakfast would've been great.

    Marie-Hélène2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying at Cynthia’s place! Beautiful views, great location (near Waipio Valley lookout and downtown Honokaa) and clean, spacious accommodations.

    Jessy2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • The views are awesome; the rooms spacious and the common rooms beautiful.

    Ann2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I had an amazing stay at Cynthia’s place! We had the guest suite which was very spacious. Cheryl was our host and she makes an amazing breakfast (much better than any other Airbnb that I’ve stayed at)! The view was fantastic and we enjoyed the hike down the valley which was a short walk from the house. Town was a short 10-15 min drive and we saw a great band playing at a bar Friday night. A perfect stay!

    Jennifer2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • The location for the space is absolutely amazing! It’s so close to Waipio look out! You can even walk there! But Do not expect beach access you will need to have a 4x4 vehicle or do an extreme down hill hike and uphill hike back out to get there back-and-forth but very worth it!! The cleaning and gardening stuff are so nice here! The loft is beautiful and has its own entrance! The main home is also gorgeous but that is a shared/common area. The back yard and view are gorgeous too!

  • The view here is SO worth it. We almost booked another room because we thought it would be fine to just enjoy the view during time around the property, but waking up here was poetic. This room also comes with a private balcony which is the best place to enjoy the sunset, so bring a bottle of wine and picnic dinner because you won’t want to leave once you get in. Such an incredible once in a lifetime experience. The room itself is exactly as pictured and the bed is super comfy.

    Stephanie2020-03-05T00:00:00Z

You *Must* have 4 wheel drive to be allowed by the State of Hawaii to drive down into Waipio Valley. It is steep and there are several water crossings. This said, it is Well Worth it! You will have a Rare opportunity to Glamour Camp in a screened in, open air cabin that sits right on a stream, in the heart of the Spectacular Waipio Valley! It is off grid. Walk to the Stunningly Beautiful Black sand beach and view 2nd highest waterfall in the US. Photo wild horses and swim in waterfalls!
This is a very Charming and Romantic Cabin with screened walls, nice furniture and great bedding. There is a solar refrigerator and gas stove. The farm is surrounded by Taro Ponds and fruit trees. There is a King Bed in the bedroom and 2 single beds in the loft, accessed by a ladder. Wild horses frequent the property and we have chickens and out door cats that are overly friendly. It is very Serene and Inspiring. PLEASE NOTE: Occasionally, the stream can rise and leaving can be delayed but, usually less than a day. If the water is high and you can not get to the property, we will refund your money. It is Wise not to have airline reservations the same day as your scheduled check out day or Yay... you may get to stay longer! You will have to wade across 2 ft deep stream to leave the property for hikes. It is rugged getting into the heart of Wapio Valley but, the whole experience involves Extremely Beautiful Nature and is a fantastic adventure! It is well worth it!
Tranquil Taro Farms and Unsurpassed Natural Beauty with Stunning Waterfalls, and powder Black Sand Beach are within Hiking distance.... about 15 minute walk to view the second highest waterfall in the US. About 25 minute walk to the Beach through Stunning Scenery.
  • Cynthia is a great host. She takes care of her guests. You will not be disappointed if you stay in any one of her accommodations. Waipio Valley is like no other. It's absolutely beautiful.

    Joyce2019-06-27T00:00:00Z
  • Very Luxurious time without internet in the nature. Make sure you pack your food, contact the host before losing internet, and have mosquito spray/wipes ready :) It wasn’t too bad but it definitely helped! Also, there is No shower, so maybe take a shower at a public beach somewhere before you go, or I used baby wipes for the night. Hope it helps!

    Hanako2019-05-20T00:00:00Z
  • We feel so lucky to have been able to experience a night in Cynthia's home in what can only be described as a slice of heaven. Wild horses, flowering trees, waterfalls (around every corner), the most beautiful black sand beach, it was truly magical. Cynthia was wonderfully hospitable - she gave us tips on things to see in the valley and cooked us a delicious meal by candlelight. A once in lifetime experience.

    Nadia2019-05-03T00:00:00Z
  • This place is very off the grid, and was a really cool adventure of a spot. Waking up in the valley surrounded by waterfalls and wild horses was a truly unique experience. The walk to the black sands beach was beautiful. If you go into this experience thinking air bnb cabin you might be disappointed, due to the lack of running water for washing dishes and showering. If you go into this thinking you’re camping you will really love it. We had a great time and I would recommend this spot.

    Kim2019-03-20T00:00:00Z
  • This is the most extraordinary place. Truely off grid to bring out the adventurer in you. Amazing landscape and spectacular beach that has been used in movies - pretty dangerous so best just to lie next to it and admire! We will never forget our nights there!

    Clare2019-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Unfortunately the river was too full to make it out to the farm for the night, so instead Cynthia and Satori put me up in their beautiful cliff house with an unbeatable view of Waipio Valley, visible from the king size bed, jacuzzi tub, and balcony. Cynthia drove me into the valley the next morning to explore the farm and see the waterfalls and black sand beach. It worked out differently than I’d thought but I still had an amazing time!

    Allison2019-01-28T00:00:00Z
  • Really enjoyed staying at this cabin. Satori was lovely, giving us tips on how to get to the nearby black sand beach, and being flexible with our checkout time since we only were staying for one night and were hoping to have some extra time the next day to explore. The place was beautiful and perfectly positioned next to a babbling stream -- overall quite a peaceful environment. The animals on the premises - wild horses, a stray valley cat, and chickens -- were all quite friendly!

    Amy2019-01-14T00:00:00Z
  • Awesome glamping spot! Was everything we expected and description is very accurate. Beautiful vistas and as long as you like to rough it ever so slightly, you will be in heaven. Say hello to the most awesome host and guide, Mango the cat, for us!

A private room in a restored Dance Hall in Kapulena, a village above magical Waipio Valley. Experience historic and authentic Hawaii. Away from the resorts and closer to nature, a hikers heaven. Hamakua coast offers botanical diversity you'll love.
This is an historic dance hall that has been renovated keeping its charm intact. It has big front rooms with high ceilings. The near two acres are alive with old mature fruit trees and a massive front yard to relax and enjoy the tropical setting.
Our neighborhood is diverse as well as friendly. We are located in a very small village of Kapulena between Honokaa Town and Kukuihaele on the road to Waipio Valley.
  • Best kept secret in Honokaa! I’d def stay there again

  • Diana is an amazing host! I had the best time staying with her. Her house is very unique and you get to eat Macadamia nuts and other fruit and veggies from the garden. Loved how welcoming Diana was, having dinner together and getting great local tips and mental support when debating on driving down into the valley :) (and definitely do it if you get the chance!!) Would definitely stay with her again.

    Tini2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • By far, the most charming place we stayed in Big Island. We stayed in 3 places, one in Kona, one in Hilo, and Diana's. The house is almost a 100 years old. It's super charming and spacious. We enjoyed our room, even though we didn't spend much time in it. Our schedules were pretty hectic as we only had a few days to explore the area. But when we Did get to spend time and talk with Diana, she was so great!! I felt like she immediacy treated us how she would her kids lol, giving us advice on where to go explore, where to eat, asking us if we were hungry. She made us banana bread to have for our mornings (which I was Super excited about because I had read Other people's reviews on the bread haha). She also made us coffee and yogurt bowls and packed them away if she left before we woke up (which was often lol). We were able to get her on her day off, which also happened to be our last day of vacay, so she walked us around the farm grounds and showed us all the wonderful herbs and fruits she grows just for herself and family. That was really fun and humbling as well. It is a dream of ours to grow our own food like that one day. Also, the pomelo was the best I'd ever had!! All the smallest touches make such a big difference. You can really tell she loves this farm. She also has a cat, who is super sweet. The house is very open and spacious. And Diana's such a great person to chat with!! She answered all our questions and was very quick to make recommendations!! Only one thing I didn't know about was the mosquitos. I think from what I can recall, it must be just this time of year (when everything starts growing) that they hone in in the area. Some got in the house, so within a an hour or so I got bit up all over my legs. They loved me the most lol. NOTE: I'd still stay here again though in a heartbeat and truly recommend for you too as well. She had natural bug spray that isn't harmful to your body and was pretty helpful in keeping them at bay. If I could rate this more than 5 stars, I would!!

    Tara2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • Can’t say enough great things about Diana! Extremely welcoming, made us feel at home, easy to check in, beautiful location and space, great breakfast, she went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and helped us tremendously with our hike out to waimanu! Would recommend to any and all!

We invite you to stay at the amazing Bamboo House, Waiuliliani. The name, Waiulililani, means heavenly waters of the ulili bird, a reference to the tranquil stream running by the house which the ulili birds were known to drink from. Waiulililani is an exotic Polynesian inspired home completed in 2014. This is one of only 3 streams in the United States that terminates in a waterfall into the ocean. Hawaii State Accommodation Taxes of 14.69% are collected through Airbnb Resolution Center.
The living area is on level 2 with lanai and requires stairs to access. The stairway to level 3 with lanai requires stairway access. With all the stairways and the lanai banister spacing, a young toddler would be unsafe unless constantly supervised.
Kukuihaele was once a sugar plantation village. Today, it's a place where time has stood still, offering peace and calm beauty. Follow the stream to the ocean, where it terminates in a waterfall, one of only 3 streams in the United States to do so.
  • I've stayed here three times now and I still love it. Sitting on the lanai and looking out at the forest, listening to the stream flow by and the birds chirp is one of the most peaceful, relaxing experiences I've ever had. The inside of the house is amazing too, with the bamboo construction on full display. The stunning Waipio lookout is a short walk down the road. I'd happily stay here again.

    Dan2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • A stay at the Bamboo House is a magical experience. We were able to relax at the house and travel around the northern end of the island to Waimea, Kohala, and Hilo/Kona with ease. Belinda was so easy to work with, so generous of spirit and kindness. We will return any chance we are able!

    Aimee2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • My family and I loved the bamboo house. Ver conveniently located to explore Waipio valley. Belinda was an excellent host...quick to respond to our questions/issues

  • Highly recommend! This is a great getaway in a super quiet part of the Big Island, surrounded by jungle and running water. My husband and I came for a five day getaway and can’t wait to come back.

    Emma2020-01-17T00:00:00Z
  • Incredible location close to Honoka’a town and Waipi’o Valley. You can walk out the door for the valley hike. Amazingly interesting bamboo construction with lovely touches throughout. Beds are comfy and the upstairs veranda was very comfortable for reading and enjoying the sounds of the stream.

    Leila2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing house with 3 master suites and well appointed kitchen. The sounds of the rainforest were amazing. Loved the location away from everything. The drive in to Honoka'a for restaurants and groceries was beautiful. This place is definitely worth it!

    Joshua2019-12-24T00:00:00Z
  • The house is very comfortable with 3 large bedrooms each with its own large bathroom. The kitchen is large and well equipped for cooking (although a knife sharpener would be a welcome addition) and partying . The upstairs lanai is particularly nice for lounging with the sound of the creek and nice breezes. The location is quiet and peaceful (The evening singing of the kokee frogs reminded us of the crickets in the summer at home). The swimming and snorkeling areas on the Koloa and Kona coasts are about a 45 minute drive through Waimea (can be longer when traffic in Waimea is backed up). Hilo is about a 50 minute drive along the beautiful tropical northeastern coast of the Big Island. This is a great place to stay if you don't have to be right on the beach.

This home is filled with glass art, blown by the owner. The open floor plan and cathedral ceilings invite interaction and community, while two bedrooms and two baths offer privacy for couples or families. Lots of windows and sliding doors allow you to enjoy the spectacular 180° ocean view. Hiking, ATV tours, and horseback riding are within walking distance, and historic Honoka’a town is just a 10 minute drive. 487 steps will bring you to the overlook of the sacred Waipio Valley.
We chose the Hamakua Coast because it gets just enough rain to be lush and green and enjoys lots of sun and amazing views. We chose to be near the Waipio Valley because we love the local people and their affinity for the 'aina, or land. For us, it is important to have our Hawaiian experience be one that honors both people and nature, and we fell in love with the true aloha spirit not always found in more populated areas.
This is a local neighborhood, and by that, we mean that most of our neighbors were born on the island and live and work nearby. If they have a party, you can expect it will be over by 10:00pm, and you will be a welcome visitor if you and your guests honor that unspoken curfew.
  • WOW !!! What a view... the water, the land, beautiful sunrises and so close to the amazing Waipio Valley Lookout - it's just a 5 minute walk. The rental home is lovely with so many amenities - beautiful glass artwork decor throughout. The surroundings are full of trees & plants giving much privacy & feeling so very tropical. We'd love to stay again and would highly recommend this rental for a short or long term stay. We definitely give a 5-star rating !!!

  • Definitely the best accommodation we stayed at on the Big Island. Lovely ocean views, comfortable and stylish interiors and provision of everything you need (plus more) for a great stay. The addition of Marcie’s glasswork, her collected artwork and beautiful bedding also make you realise that this house has been well loved as Marcie used to live here herself. It just added an extra layer of homeliness that made it a very special place. The location is also great - only a minute walk from the Waipio lookout and a lovely (though somewhat strenuous downhill then uphill) hike into the valley itself. We did this on Xmas Day and walked up the valley to a beautiful waterfall and swimming hole and we were the only ones there! Would definitely recommend The Glass House as a wonderful place to stay in this area.

  • We loved staying here! The view was amazing, and the walk to the Waipio Valley lookout is literally steps away. The home is spacious and airy with incredible views, and it has all the amenities you might need. The washer/dryer came in especially handy in the middle of the trip! Our kids are little, so we took a shuttle tour down into the Valley, and it was truly breathtaking. We also loved the proximity to the nearby towns (we had great shopping in Honoka'a and an amazing meal at the Red Water Café in Waimea) and the beaches (Pololu was magical). Our only disappointment is that we couldn't stay longer. We will definitely be back to Marcie's place!

  • Beautiful Home. Beautiful Island. Loved the Horses and Geckos..So many shooting stars...

  • Marcie's place is a comfortable and clean refuge. The location is so quiet and incredibly scenic, it felt like a retreat within a vacation. Waipio valley is RIGHT there and Honokaa is a short drive . However, we actually found that driving up over to Hapuna beach for the day was a short and delightful trip! We had already been on the island for a week and a half when we stayed our last few nights at Marcie's. Likely because of that, there were two things that I noted in particular about the space: It was dry and it felt like home. Really! After coming from Puna in the southeast, a location where the sheets felt dry and hanging bathing suits overnight made them dry in the morning was notable! And, it really is a sweetly comfortable space with just enough of what you need to feel cozy and homey. There were only two of us, but this could VERY easily be shared with kids or with another couple. Marcie responded very quickly to the few questions that I had and even offered to have a local person come by if I needed help. One tip: Look north from the deck on a clear day - that's Maui!

  • Four of us, my wife, daughter, niece, and I stayed in the Glass House for 5 nights (6-11 Aug 2019) while in Waipio valley for a wedding. The home is as advertised and more. It is well stocked with bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen amenities. The location is great for exploring Waipio Valley, just a short walk from Waipio Lookout and the valley access road (must have a 4 WD vehicle), and for exploring Big Island. I really like having the beach towels, chairs, umbrella, and other equipment available and it was a short hour drive to Hapuna or Mauna Kea resort beaches. I was concerned about not having air conditioning being from Houston, Texas, but we slept quite comfortably at night and the multiple fans helped a lot. So this was a non issue. Do bring earplugs for sleeping (I use those silicon ones from the pharmacy) as the bugs sing out loudly at night. I would add that there were no bugs in the home at all. There were several cute green Geico geckos inside, but not a bother at all. I loved having coffee out on the balcony in front of the amazing ocean view each morning. Very peaceful. Overall, I would highly recommend this home. Marcie is a great and responsive host. We would definitely repeat our stay here at the Glass House in Waipio Valley. Steven Thibodeaux Houston, Texas,

  • Lovely home in quiet location. On a clear night the view of the stars is amazing. Marcie gave many suggestions for activities. Well appointed & comfortable home.

Newly appointed space sitting at the edge of the 900-foot Waipio cliffside, mere paces from the Waipi'o lookout. The modern amenities include a large walk-in closet, kitchenette, four-post teak queen bed, 200 sq ft private deck (peek-a-boo ocean views), walk-in natural stone-tiled shower, granite counters, toaster, coffeemaker, smart TV, propane BBQ, small fridge, hot plate, and housewares. The suite has two private entrances and sits on an acre of lush property. You'll feel right at home here!
The guest suite, or Ohana, is located on an acre of property covered in lush flora (much of which is edible). The views from our cliff edge are one of a kind. The valley, sky, ocean, views of Maui are ever-changing. The reviews give you an idea of what it has to offer. We are very into sustainability- the house runs on a fraction of the energy it generates via solar, and we work toward living off the land. Being avid travelers ourselves, we are happy to share some local advice and tips with you to help make your visit as pleasant and fulfilling as possible.
We are technically in Kukuihaele, at the edge of Waipio Valley ("Valley of the Kings") The closest small town, Honoka'a (small fresh food grocer, movie theatre, emergency room, individually-owned restaurants and shops, etc) is 9 miles up the road, and the larger town of Waimea (small airport, hardware store, larger grocer and hospital) is a 30-minute drive. The larger towns of Hilo and Kona, each with international airports, are both approximately one hour away. For the most part the closest place to grab a bite is Honokaa. ("For the most part" because there are sometimes roadside food places open during the day closer to Waipio. Also, the Waipio Cookhouse is now open for lunch and dinner: Farm to table casual dining. Just 0.75 mi up the road. Try it out!) Our quaint neighborhood is remarkably safe.
  • Wonderful place to see Waipi’o Valley! Clean, quiet retreat in a beautiful setting. The directions made it easy to find the place...perfect for a couple’s getaway!

    Nancy2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect location from which to start the Waipio Valley hike to the black sand beach below. The lookout is so close by that you can enjoy the views at both sunrise and sunset and still have the entire day to explore the island. Great property, with all the amenities we needed!

    Caroline2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • Erik and Amy were welcoming hosts. The room was better than expected - well equipped mini kitchen and complimentary fruits and juice. The location is in between Hilo and Kona, if you plan on sightseeing in both areas. Perfect little getaway.

    Mateusz2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • Well above our expectations. Clean, great location and wonderful hosts. The walk to the Waipio lookout was convenient but even better location for making the trip down into the valley. If we make it back would definitely stay again. Our favorite part of our trip thus far.

    Karla2019-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • Clean, unique place with awesome hosts! We loved grabbing an orange off the tree & hiking down to the beach in the mornings before it got too busy/hot. Most amazing beach we've ever been to. Then a short drive to food, shops, and other more frequented beaches. Thank you for an awesome stay!

    Ashley & Kyle2019-12-11T00:00:00Z
  • Aloha all, Erik and Amy are AWESOME host. Their separate ohana was perfect for our weekend staycation. We enjoyed the fresh tangerines they provided, it was a nice snack as we made our way down Waipi’o Vally. The view of Waipi’o and Maui from the back yard are priceless. I’d say here again in the future.

  • We loved staying here! We found it easily with the directions provided. The space and bed were very comfortable, the porch was great, and communication was smooth with the hosts. And of course, the view from the backyard was amazing!!

  • You can't beat this location for Waipio Valley. The Waipio hiking trail starts just 100 feet from the house, so while everyone else is fighting for parking in the tiny lot (or loading up in some awful tour van), you can just walk out your front door.

  • The house is wonderful! It was very cosy. Beautiful decorated with even fresh flowers. Great kitchen with all the supplies you need including the basic herbs and condiments. Uppon arrival we received a generous welcoming gift with fresh fruits, coffee, chocolates and banana bread! The owner also gave a call to make sure everything was ok. The location is amazing. Very private, with amazing views. Just two minutes away from the Waipi’o lookout point. We loved watching the sunrise every morning. Also, when the sky is clear, you cant believe the amount of stars you can see at this point. We loved the house and the location very much!

  • The Cliff House is a majestic, wonderful, and incredible place. And you should visit the Gallery too, beautiful pictures and a fun 2 hour lookout point tour you can book there (Kelly is an awesome guide). You can't find anywhere else on the island like this. All in all Richard is an incredible host. We couldn't have asked for a better experience! Highly recommend it!!

This magnificent 4.5 acre permaculture organic orchard retreat sits back on 750' cliff above Waipio Valley, and looks to the ocean and rugged coastline. Epic views of 1000-2000' cliffs. 3 cottages to choose from. The Studio and 2 bedroom are a connected building, like a side by side duplex.
Sometimes there are a multitude of waterfalls seen cascading down 1000-2000' cliffs into the sea. We are in the early stages of growing Vanilla, Cocoa, black sapote (Chocolate pudding tree), Macadamia nut trees. Try our fully mature hamakua coast coffee beans, mangoes, avocados, pomelo, Jackfruit, papaya, passion fruit, soursop, rambutan, lychee nuts, starfruit, Brazilian cherries, jaboticaba, cherymoya, mountain apples, true cinnamon, cloves, Miracle berries, a variety of citrus, bananas(when in season) and much more grown on the property. Ocean and waterfall views abound.
Drive over to the white sand beaches about 35minutes from Waimea, the 5 star hotels and high end shopping of the west coast.
  • The property has the best view in the whole island. Theres an absolutely amazing black sand beach in a short drive front the property. Though, you’d need 4 weel drive to get there if you don’t like hiking.

  • The most peaceful cottage stay you could imagine. It is all so breathtaking - the views, the valley, the animals and the fruit! Paula is so welcoming and helpful! Mahalo! Jacquie & Evan

  • Fantastic place with a view of Waipio valley and an awesome orchard not to be forgotten! This is a great quiet location out in the country on the cliffs.

    Jared2018-06-13T00:00:00Z
  • Such a special place! We booked relatively last minute, after a mishap with a different airbnb listing, so we did not know what to expect from this place. We were totally blown away. Definitely off the beaten path (so probably not the best option for travelers looking for easy access to beaches, shops, restaurants, and other amenities). All of the "white-sand" beaches are about an hour drive from here. But if you are looking for something more rugged, serene, and peaceful this place is unbelievable. The bed is comfortable, the little kitchenette has everything you need to cook most of your own meals (like I said not tons of restaurant options, though the ones we did try were great!). The sound of the stream running only 20 feet from your front door, the birds chirping, the stars at night, the lush fruit trees, and the VIEW - seriously special spot.

    Haley2018-05-15T00:00:00Z
  • Great view, excellent hosts, a fantastic place to stay.

    Willis2018-05-07T00:00:00Z
  • My wife and I have traveled the world and this place is one of the most special we have ever been to! Amazing views tucked into a fruit orchard that you can pick and eat as you please. Outdoor soaking tub that we used every day. Great nature noises to help us sleep. Super cool hosts that live nearby and had us over for dinner one night. We will definitely be back!!

    Jeff2017-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • If you have a chance to stay here during your trip to the Big Island, do it! Everything about our stay here was wonderful and we so wish we could’ve stayed longer than we did. We loved waking up to that breathtaking view every morning and picking our own fruit for breakfast. I think we made avocado toast just about every morning we were there 😅 The cottage itself was perfect for a couple and Dan & Paula thought of everything you might need while there! The kitchenette was fully stocked and had a hot plate/toaster oven/microwave/coffee pot. There was a grill on the porch (near to the ever so relaxing soaking tub). They even provided beach chairs and towels for when we decided to venture westward for the day. As far as weather goes, it would rain on and off throughout the morning in short spurts and usually at night as well. It was so relaxing to fall asleep to the rain. It’s also nice and cool up there at night, so even though there’s no air conditioning I promise you will be comfortable! I’m usually always hot at night but the ceiling fan and floor fan kept me very comfortable. I had to actually turn the floor fan off the first night because we woke up freezing. There are quite a few mosquitos, so if the mosquitos love you like they love me be sure to bring repellant! We wore it when we would hang out outside or go pick fruits and all was fine. The cottage also has screens behind each sliding door and windows so that you can still enjoy the breeze without being eaten alive! We so enjoyed our stay here, it was truly a highlight of our trip. Hopefully we can be back someday!

The Waipʻo Lodge Kai Room is bright and airy with a comfortable Queen size bed. The house itself is an authentic “plantation home” built in 1922 and oozing with character. These walls have stories to tell! My wife and I live upstairs with our 3 children as your hosts. So the disclaimer is: you can sometimes hear small footprints from upstairs. Join us!!

The Waipʻo Lodge Lehua Room is a cute room with a Queen size bed. Itʻs also equipped with a sink with hot and cold water. The house itself is an authentic “plantation home” built in 1922 and oozing with character. These walls have stories to tell! My wife and I live upstairs with our 3 children as your hosts. So the disclaimer is: if you are not looking for total quiet and enjoy interacting with other travelers in the simple beauty of the Hamakua Coast, this is your place. We run an outdoor education program for teenagers (Hawaii Outdoors Institute) and are very knowledgeable about hiking in Waipi’o, Waimanu and other outdoor adventures. Many people use the hostel as a launching point for hiking trips. Join us!!
  • This stay was one of my best with Airbnb! The home is so beautiful, with an amazing view of the ocean and Maui on a clear day. I would definitely love to come back!

  • Great place and friendly hosts! Enjoyed our stay before a long hike.

  • A little slice of heaven on Earth. Modest yet elegant, the whole space has the charm of an older house with the functionality of a well run guest house. great organization by the hosts. nice washer dryer . lovely natural scents in bathrooms with cedar and wood floor elements, and all the great fruit trees and garden plots. I loved the outdoor kitchen with a nice grill and burners, nice tap water, etc. Washing dishes was never so nice a chore. The views from the house are quite stunning as well, and the location can't be beat for going to Waipio, or even en route from Hilo to Waimea and beyond. Would definitely stay there again!

  • Maryann's hospitality is unbeatable. It made us feel very welcome and at home. And the views and the place is unbeatable, you can breathe peace, tranquility with unbeatable views. She is definitely a super host and they definitely choose this place to stay ... ❤️❤️

    Mapi2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • Maryann’s place was quaint, super clean, comfy and had spectacular views. The coqui chirping at night were an added treat. Tranquil and lovely. Thanks Maryann!

    Dani2020-02-06T00:00:00Z
  • Stop what you're doing and book Maryann's place right now. The view is incredible, even better than the photos. We visited the official Waipio lookout right after our check out, and we felt the view from the AirBnB was nicer. The lanai (porch) wraps around the entire second floor and you can step out onto it from pretty much any place in the unit, providing luxurious sense of the outdoors where you can listen to coquis and feel the breeze as you stare out into the ocean and marvel at the valley and waterfall. The place itself was immaculately clean, warmly decorated, and quite comfortable. The kitchen was well-stocked (even with zip-lock bags which saved me!). For best results, spend some time buying local ingredients around Big Island, then cook yourself a nice meal and enjoy it out on the lanai with your favorite beverage at sunset - this is an AirBnB that rewards you for spending time in it. Maryann herself was a warm and top-notch host - she provided a very helpful video for finding her place beforehand which really made a difference in the rain, and even left us a greeting snack and coffee for when we checked in. If we're lucky to return to Big Island (and we hope we are), we'd book Maryann's place again in a heartbeat - the only bad thing about it was that we could only stay for one night.

    David2020-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • Maryann’s place is one of the best places we’ve stayed! The view and tranquility of the location set on the Waipio Valley Lookout is amazing! We couldn’t take our eyes away and in the mornings we were astounded by all the rainbows over the water! Maryann was the best host with meeting us upon arrival and helping us find our way since we arrived in the dark along with making sure we had everything we needed. Communication via text was ideal and all texts quickly answered! The house is beautifully decorated and the beds are comfy with amazing soft sheets! Extra special touches were great smelling soaps! Kitchen had all we needed for cooking and coffee making! - and we loved sipping our local Hawaiian coffee off the lanai each am! The vibe here is amazing and we would love to come back! We did end up basing here and traveling some distances around the island but it was always wonderful to come back to cool quiet nights - we even enjoyed the coqui frogs - they were so pleasant to me!

    Esther2020-01-06T00:00:00Z
  • Loved our stay! Maryann went above & beyond to make us feel at home and even saved our day by arranging an alternate way for us to get to the valley when our original plan fell thru.

    Rohi2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • It’s hard to pick which was better, our host Maryann or the view of Waipio. The house is amazing, super clean and quite possibly the best view in the world (literally). Maryann will spoil you with kindness and give you all the insider information about Waipio. Highest recommendation!

    Ned2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • We have been there for couple of days with our kids. The house is outstanding, amazing views, super cool kitchen with view the best in my life. Maryann took care about us in a great way, she is super host, we would definitely recommend this place.

    Izabela2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • Maryann’s hale is a dream!!! No pictures or description could do the stunning view and grounds justice. The most beautiful sunset we’ve ever experienced. Maryann made us feel so welcome and the space was immaculate and had everything you could want or need. The beds and pillows were also so comfy! Can’t imagine a more beautiful space to enjoy and experience aloha on the Big Island. Already trying to figure out when we can return!

  • Stunning views and amenities. Accommodates a large diverse group nicely. Plenty of room to spread out. It is remote and will require driving to access the beaches. The swimming pool waterside and hot tub were your own private oasis. Beautiful luxurious home.

  • This place is incredible, walking in for the first time is nothing short of jaw-dropping. The views and the atmosphere combine with a beautiful and luxurious house to make for a fabulous stay. It really is next-level amazing!!!

    Bry2018-10-26T00:00:00Z
  • Where to start? First of all, this has got to be one of the most magnificently situated homes I have ever seen, perched some 600 feet above the Pacific with expansive views of the ocean and the breathtakingly beautiful seaside cliffs framing the lush Waipio Valley. From the front yard and observation deck we enjoyed watching humpback whales and tuna and the ever changing aspects of the sea, sky, and land. The home itself is more like a compound, with separate main and guest houses joined by a lovely outdoor lanai with colorful dining table and grilling area. The pool and hot tub were refreshing and relaxing, set in a lush tropical garden paradise. An absolutely fabulous gourmet kitchen made any type of meal preparation easy and enjoyable. And you never have to take your eyes off the magnificent views outside while you are 'working', due to the almost limitless vistas afforded by the generous use of large windows throughout the home. Beautiful furnishings, comfortable and spacious bedrooms, and privacy for everyone when they want it, but with great gathering spaces for shared times as well. We will definitely be coming back!

    Timothy2018-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • This was the most amazing property and location we have ever stayed in. Everything was perfect! Views were phenomenal, beach-pool was gorgeous and entertaining, the rooms were clean and fabulous, kitchen was clean and complete, we couldn't have asked for a better house to accommodate our big family! The one negative we can all agree on were the insects and bugs especially the coqui frogs and their obnoxious croaks, but you have to expect this sort of nature in a tropical area. If you're looking for a more civilized area, you'd have to go towards Kona which is about an hour and a half away. Other than that you are locked in a quiet and slow neighborhood within 30 miles away.

    Denise2017-10-16T00:00:00Z
  • Quite simply one of the most beautiful places I have ever been in my life. The view from the house and grounds is spectacular. Property manager Pam is very accessible and helpful and it is easy to get around from the property as well. Highly recommended!

  • Cynthia was absolutely wonderful. She was kind and helpful and gave great recommendations for things to do. She knows and loves the island well and it shows. The space was such a perfect little getaway, I truly have never slept better.

  • A great house with a lovely view of the cliffs and open ocean. Sheryl was our host for the 3 day stay and she prepared 3 different breakfasts for each morning. She was great for a chat but never too intrusive just the right amount. The common area in the house kitchen is well stocked with all the cooking facilities of home and more. The views over the cliffs for breakfast were just the pictures on the listing. Mahalo for a great stay and we hope to be back.

  • 5 stars all around! Can only hope to stay at Cynthia's place again in the future. Incredible just about sums it up..

  • Cynthia’s place has a million dollar view! Spacious common area and lovely home decor. Breakfast is good as well. Highly recommended!

    Karen2020-02-04T00:00:00Z
  • Cynthia is communicative and sitting in the dining room to enjoy breakfast as well as the great view is just AMAZING! It is so nice to have a separate bathroom and if you remember to keep all net windows closed - there will no bugs or mosquitos OR you will get into lots of trouble. The house is quite close to the Wapio Lookout and we took 2 min to walk there. The house is not in a very convenient location so you'd better get a car to get there.

    Fei2020-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • Cynthia is a wonderful host. Her place is very beautiful, she has decorated it very well. The view oustide is amazing. It's a perfect place to sit, relax and sip coffee while enjoying the great views of Waipio valley.

    Garima2020-01-21T00:00:00Z
  • I to say this was our very first time renting just a room, we normally rent a whole unit, and to be honest after this truly fantastic experience my wife and I can’t wait to do it again! Cynthia’s place was amazing clean and close to so much! More importantly from the moment we arrived to the sadness we experienced leaving we loved every single minute! Cynthia was so amazing that we can honestly say that we made a life long friend. The second leg of our trip we rented another place and every day my wife and I mentioned through the day how much we missed staying with Cynthia! If you are looking for the very very very best place that is also close to the magic of Waipio Valley, there is only one place to stay and this is right here with Cynthia!

Stunning 3BR Waipio Lookout Home on 1-acre Cliffside with 180-degree ocean & Hamakua coast views at the cliff edge of Waipio Valley. The house is centered on an acre of beautifully landscaped clifftop land (for this reason, not suitable for children). Modern interior dressings, 3,400 sq ft of interior space, & 1,400 sq ft of inviting deck space. Warm, spacious outdoor living areas overlooking beautiful lawns, edible gardens, immense ocean, Maui, rainbows, squalls, & even migrating whales.
Stunning 3BR Waipio Lookout Home on 1-acre Cliffside As our primary residence, this property is immensely special to us, and will only (newly) be offered at certain times of year. With 180-degree ocean views on the Hamakua coast at the edge of Waipio Valley, 3BR/2.5 BA, it is indoor/outdoor living at its best. Our abode sits perched atop 1,000-foot cliffs (again, not appropriate for children) leading to the historic Waipio Valley, or “Valley Of the Kings,” where many of the ancient Hawaiian ali'i (kings) once resided. This is a very sacred place steeped in Hawaiian history. The stunningly beautiful Waipio Valley is verdant and lush, teeming with wildlife, waterfalls, fishponds, hiking trails and rivers that lead to a pristine mile-long black sand beach. The main house is centered on one acre of beautifully landscaped undulating clifftop land. The interior is fully furnished with modern dressings, claiming 3,400 square feet of interior space, with large glass doors opening up onto a massive 1,400 square foot deck- a warm, spacious outdoor living area (wonderful for yoga, mediation, sunning, relaxing, entertaining, or just plain zenning out in the large hot tub). The home was renovated in 2010, with updated appliances and cabinetry, washer/drier, granite countertops, and thoughtful lighting throughout. Its modern open floor plan brings the ocean and the tropics to you with its spectacular views, whether you're in the kitchen, dining area, living room or bedrooms. We have designed for the ultimate indoor-outdoor living experience with large glass doors opening onto a warm spacious hardwood deck and yard, offering views of the pacific ocean, the coastline cliffs of Waipio Valley, and our neighboring island of Maui. Sleeping quarters include three (3) spacious high-ceiling bedrooms and two-and-half (2.5) airy bathrooms. In addition to the two tastefully appointed queen-size guest suites downstairs (each with walk-in closet, and french doors opening onto the private guest lanai), the second-floor master suite features a king-size bed, lounge area, a workspace/desk area which overlooks the yard and ocean, and two large walk-in closets. The master bath houses a jacuzzi tub (also overlooking the ocean, yard, and cliffsides), his and her vanities, and a walk-in shower. The kitchen is a chef's dream. It is spacious and open, with infinity views through the house to the ocean, ideal for entertaining and cooking at the same time, with cozy bar seating. There is ample granite counter space to prep meals with friends and family. With a beautiful gas range and oven, dishwasher, appliances, and kitchenware, you will be fully prepared to cook any meal. The expansive 1,400 square feet of outdoor living area includes a 6-person hot tub, outdoor lanai with heated shower, outdoor lounges and tables, and propane grill (BBQ). The back yard bestows 180-degree ocean views, offering frequent humpback whale sightings in the winter and breathtaking rainbows during any season. The remainder of the property is carefully landscaped with numerous native flora, a carefully crafted orchard, fruit trees galore, and numerous seasonal garden beds. The long driveway leading down to the front of the house offers seclusion, insulation, and privacy. There is no central air conditioning or heating, as the climate here is never too hot nor too cold. At night, the sounds of the tropics will lull you to sleep. The closest small town, Honoka'a (small fresh food grocer, movie theatre, emergency room, individually-owned restaurants and shops, etc) is 9 miles up the road, and the larger town of Waimea (small airport, hardware store, larger grocer and hospital) is a 30-minute drive. The larger towns of Hilo and Kona, each with international airports, are both approximately one hour and fifteen minutes away. You will likely need to rent a car while visiting the Big Island. If you wish to access the road down to Waipio Valley, it is restricted to 4-wheel drive vehicles only. If you are physically fit and like to hike and walk, the journey by foot is a great option. Deposits and cleaning fees will vary based on length of stay. Depending on the season, we will on occasion be staying on the property in an adjacent 1BR/1BA ohana guest suite. We look forward to sharing this magical home, region, and experience with you.
  • Wow this place is magical!! The view is something you'd see on a postcard. And the house is on a property that's growing lots of fruits and vegetables. It felt like we were in the Garden of Eden. The house itself was very spacious, impeccably clean, and had everything we needed. Amy also told us where to go for great hikes, secluded waterfalls, and restaurants. This place far exceeded my expectations.
