  • Barbara was a gracious host and accommodated our very late reservation. Her spot was easy to find and a great place to stop for the night.

  • Barbara is a really friendly and excellent host and would tell you all about what you want to know about Cape Charles and the area! She has two very well-groomed, well-trained and friendly Samoyeds! They are just the cutest ! Barbara also maintains regular updates to the house, while still maintaining the charm of the home. Being in the eastern shore, the location depends on what is available seasonally. I personally would come again in the summer to enjoy the nature parks, fishing and boardwalks in the surrounding areas. Have fun !

  • Barbara went out of her way to make me stay a pleasant one.

  • Barbara is friendly and sweet and she makes wonderful meals for breakfast so make sure not to miss those! Her home is very nice and the room I stayed in (the yellow room) was comfortable and had plenty of space to put away my things. Barbara has two beautiful dogs and they are both very friendly. The location of her home is great as it is near the interstate and a short drive to Cape Charles. Barbara is a wonderful hostess and made me feel at home during my stay at her place. I would definitely stay in her home again!

  • Barbara is very outgoing and loves to chat with her guests. Born and raised in the ares, she has wonderful tips and stories to share. She loves welcoming guests to her B&B.

  • This was my first experience with Airbnb and it was wonderful. Barbara opened her lovely home with genuineness and grace and I left the Thomas Inn looking forward to my return as well as other Airbnb experiences. Her location was quiet and just perfect for weekend restoration.

  • Barbara is a model host. She was extremely attentive to us, even going the extra mile preparing scrumptious vegan breakfasts for us, she also provided as much coffee, water and fresh food as we needed for our day trips. Her home is sparkling clean, cozy and stylish, like come out from a top decoration magazine. Her two furry children are unbelievably loveable and well-behaved. We do recommend this quiet place where we have felt at home.

The Chambre d'Amis is located in Historic Eastville, home to the oldest continuous court records in the United States. It is 6 miles North of Cape Charles, 5 miles from Savage Neck Dunes. The Chambre d’Amis is a quaint little cottage located behind our house and accessible from Debdevon Lane with reserved parking for one vehicle. For those looking for peace and quiet this is the place for all you will hear is the chorus of frogs and cicadas as you sit out on your deck.
As Airbnb as of September 1st only started to collect the VA State sales tax, upon arrival the guest are expected to pay the 5% Local transient tax directly to the host. We provide breakfast items such as milk, coffee, tea, English muffins or bagels, butter, eggs and sausage as well as orange juice and bottled water at no extra cost.
Eastville is a very small town near Cape Charles. It is the county seat which has the oldest continuous courts records in the United States. If you are looking for a very quiet place to stay, The Chambre d'Amis should be your choice, as it is located away from the main road, behind our house. The only sound you will probably hear in the evening are the calling of tree frogs and the chirping of cicada.
  • Great place in a great location! Stay here if you can!

  • This was our second stay. The location is great for us since we are kayaking and fishing. Odile and David give you your space, but are available if you need anything. We'll definitely be back next year.

    Karen2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • My boyfriend and I had a wonderful stay at Odile and David's guesthouse. It was clean, inviting, and very cute. The location was fine for us, but is a little bit further from Cape Charles than expected. Still only about a 10-15 minute drive! Also, there is a great beach close by the house. I loved having coffee with the cats in the morning. Odile was out of town, but David was welcoming and gave us great insight into where to go. We hope to visit again soon.

    Natalie2019-07-29T00:00:00Z
  • This was such a clean and lovely home! Our hosts were so kind and even left us breakfast, which was much needed after arriving late from a long drive. We will definitely be back again!

Honeymoon Island Cottage is a lodging experience like no other. You and your guest will stay in a charming tiny farmhouse that is located just steps from the Chesapeake Bay on a USDA certified organic farm. Enjoy access to a private saltwater pool, private beach, Chesapeake Bay water access for boating, swimming, paddleboarding, fishing or just soaking, dig for clams, collect wild oysters, or just sit and marvel at the beauty. We look forward to welcoming you.
Honeymoon Island Cottage is perhaps one of the most unique lodging experiences one can have on the Eastern Shore of Va. The tiny house overlooks the location of the Island that gave it its name, Honeymoon Island. The island, once part of the Laughing King Farm was frequented by Honeymooners for decades before time, and the unrelenting wind and waves of the mighty Chesapeake claimed the island for herself. Today only memories and land records are evidence that it ever existed. The cottage has several unique features that make it a stand out. The first is its origin story. The cottage is a reconfiguration of an older larger farm cottage that was claimed by a giant walnut tree. Lovingly repurposed and recycled the cottage boasts a dormered sleeping loft that is tall enough to stand comfortably in. The loft contains one king size bed that features a new green tea memory foam mattress, plenty of large plush pillows, 100% cotton bedding, and duvee, and an all-season comforter. The loft is airconditioned. Downstairs, comfortable leather easy chairs and a large leather sofa provide ample room to spread out and relax, the decor is a collection of personal antiques and finds highlighted by an antique Persian rug from the owner's private collection. There is a small fridge for your use. The bathroom brings together an eclectic design that can best be described as concrete industrial minimalism meets vintage motorcycle. The bath features a custom concrete countertop vanity, and a front to back shotgun style window configuration that allows you to take in views of both the farm and the bay while you and your partner enjoy the luxury of your own personally controlled showerhead. There is a separate private bath entrance so that you can rinse off after a day at the beach or pool before you enter the cottage.
We are a farm within a small private neighborhood surrounded by water, woods, other farms, and nature. We are quite literally the end of the end of the road.
  • M.J. was an excellent host and made us feel more than welcome at the Laughing King. He gave us great suggestions for things to do each day of our trip and breakfast was delicious! We stayed in the Tiny House and loved every second of it. Our puppy had a great time running through the field and exploring the Bay. We highly recommend and will definitely return.

    Virginia2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage truly offers a unique space, which we thoroughly enjoyed: a cozy gas stove, a lovely hand-built loft bed, and a groovy bathroom. One of the two porches (part of the cottage itself) and its rockers provide a phenomenal sunrise/water view location. M.J. could not have been a more attentive host, providing delicious breakfasts, conversations, and excursion tips. Also, the Laughing King Retreat is a great choice if you care about sustainability. Absolutely loved it!

    Geraldine2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • M.J. is a fantastic host and the house is truly one of a kind. I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a relaxing getaway. We loved every part of our stay and can’t wait to one day come back again!

  • MJ was an amazing host and the tiny home was everything we hoped it would be! It was so warm and inviting. Our dog loved the home and the huge yard as well. MJ was kind enough to accommodate our vegan breakfast request as well. We will definitely be visiting again!

    Angelie2019-11-24T00:00:00Z
  • Great location to relax and unwind. M.J. Is a great host that will make sure you are taken care of. Very happy with our stay

    Brent2019-11-04T00:00:00Z
  • We were looking for some quiet time away and we found it at the tiny house. MJ is the best - he made us feel at home immediately. We enjoyed reading on the porch of the tiny house and having drinks with other guests by the fire pit. We even cooked some wild mushrooms growing on the property in the main house's gourmet kitchen.

    Nadine2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • My wife and I just stayed in the tiny house, for our honeymoon. We had an experience we'll cherish forever. The house itself had so much character. The loft with the bed was the best part. MJ built the bed and bathroom himself, and they are the two biggest things that make this house special. The rooms in the main house are beautiful as well! The grounds have stunning views of the bay, plenty of kayaks and things to do outside. Inside the large house is a nice pool table. The most pleasant surprise for us, was the breakfast! MJ must be a world class chef in his spare time, because his food was phenomenal. He also was so pleasant to talk with and share stories with. I cannot recommend MJ's place and food and service enough. We can't wait to visit again!

    Kevin2019-10-22T00:00:00Z
  • Honeymoon Island Cottage was such a treat for two tiny-house-loving folks like us! Located on an unbelievable property with beautiful views and excellent amenities, it was exactly what we expected and more. MJ was an excellent host, communicative with lots of local tips while still respecting our space. Cape Charles is a lovely town, and our interesting accommodations were the icing on the cake of our trip!

  • M.J. was great! He is an amazing breakfast cook. We started our days out well fueled. The space was magical. We loved the peace and quiet. The house is large and welcoming. Our room had a really comfortable very large bed, a fun big shower and a great tub. The view was outstanding. We loved a little snuggle with the barn cat. M.J. gave us great local tips. We especially loved going to Eyre House garden.

  • You can expect nothing but the best at the Laughing King. The house and setting is beautiful, and MJ could not be a more knowledgeable and gracious host.

    George2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • Wow! What a spectacular getaway! The Laughing King is drop-dead gorgeous, and MJ is a fabulous host. We stayed over during an unseasonably cool weekend, and MJ made sure his firepit was chock to the brim with wood throughout our visit. He cooked tasty breakfasts and regaled us with stories and tips. We and fellow guests all lingered longer, reluctant to leave the convivial conversation. If you want to be close to Cape Charles but not limit yourself to town, MJ’s place is the perfect getaway and jumping off point for all the other lovely places the Eastern Shore has to offer! Can’t recommend The Laughing King enough!!

  • The property was beautiful and the loft was bigger than it seemed from the pictures - and clean! It was the perfect spot for me, my husband, and our infant son. Eddie was a great host and we hope to return the next time we are on the Eastern Shore.

    Heidi2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • Awesome place to stay for a getaway. Quiet with a great view off the dock and the hummingbird feeders on the window were really great. Close to Cape Charles!

  • Eddie is an outstanding host. He will go above and beyond for you. The space is amazing as well, with the property being perfectly situated on the water. Fishing is great in the flats up the creek and the area is beautiful and secluded. Private dock is a bonus :) will stay here again and highly recommend.

  • What a wonderful property! Great private location. Beautiful view of the water with a pier. Highly recommend this place. And, a great host.

    Chris2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • Eddie was an incredible host: check-in was incredibly smooth, he was exceedingly friendly, and offered helpful tips of places to check out in the area. The space is very cozy and comfortable, and the pictures don't do the surrounding area justice--it is an incredibly scenic spot.

    Lincoln2019-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • The bed has a wonderful memory foam mattress/pillows, and thoughtful layers of linens for those like the warm or cold. Such a great night sleep that the photos can’t do justice! Everything inside is clean, dust free, bug free, and well lit. The AC worked wonderfully on a hot summer day. Eddie met us upon arrival and showed us right to the a covered parking spot next to the entrance — great for any inclement weather. A really thoughtfully put together little spot along your journey, or as a destination. Kudos, Eddie.

  • Our stay at Linda's place was great! She was very quick to respond to anything we needed and gave great recommendations for local places to eat. Our only complaints were that the internet didn't work very well and the shower was extremely small and short, making it hard for us to shower. Overall, a good stay!

    Hannah2019-07-25T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay, having the two bedrooms was perfect since we traveled with two kids. We loved being only a few minutes away from the beach, and about an hour from the va Zoo. My kids loved being able to run around the yard too! Incredibly relaxing environment, everyone in the area was very kind, very friendly. Highly recommend Linda’s place, she even had brochures for local things which was great. We snagged a boat ride for my birthday which was amazing.

The cottage is good for couples, solo adventurers, families, and pets! You'll love its character. If you want fancy, this home isn't for you. Homes at this end of Smith Beach have access to a smaller private beach on the Bay that is an easy walk from our cottage. We also has a small beach right out back where you can launch your kayak! You'll see deer and raccoon on the shore, bald eagle's flying overhead, and countless types of other wild birds. This cottage is our family pride and joy.
The cottage has a living room, dining area and kitchen and is a waterfront cottage. It is on a body of water known as The Gulf—The Gulf empties into the Chesapeake Bay. There are 2 bedrooms, one with a queen size bed, and one with a double bed plus an additional twin bed in the same room. There is one full bathroom with shower and a half bath adjoining the master bedroom. There is a futon in the living room. The kitchen is equipped with an electric range, refrigerator, microwave, and dishwasher. There is a deck out over the water and a walkway from the back stairs to the waterfront deck. There is central heat and air in all rooms. Access to the beach is down the street and is marked Private Beach. The upstairs rooms have Direct TV (with basic package).
Just a heads up! The only grocery stores that are close to the cottage are Food Lion and Qual Cove Farms (a wonderful little health food store that unfortunately has weird hours). So if you are particular about your food, you should pack ahead! Some of our favorite places to eat: DeadRise Pies - Pizzas! Kelly's Pub - Irish pub with a little bit of everything! Yuk Yuk & Joes - Serious dive bar! Pizza, wings, burgers, subs. Machipongo Trading Company - Coffee, smoothies, bagels, breakfast! Sting Rays - Southern cooking at its best. Their breakfast is great too! Brown Dog Ice Cream- DELICIOUS ice cream. El Maguey - Favorite Mexican restaurant. Little bit of a drive but worth it. Check out Savage Neck Dunes! Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve is a Natural Area Preserve right on the Chesapeake Bay. Its a super short drive from the cottage and a gorgeous .75-mile walk through the woods to get to the beach. Climb up the dunes and look at the stunning view. Find shells, arrowheads and washed up driftwood. The address of the parking lot is 2101 Savage Neck Rd.
  • The pictures do not do Caroline’s place justice!! The property and view is absolutely stunning. The inside of the house is homey and filled with wonderful artwork. Caroline is a great hostess with a quick response time. The location is amazing also. I highly recommend staying here! We loved it!!

  • Adorable little house with spectacular views and great access to the bay and the Chesapeake!

    Susan2019-10-18T00:00:00Z
  • This was our first Airbnb experience! We were so thrilled. The house was very clean and much cuter than we anticipated. We had our dog, Alphie, with us so we were a little worried about going someplace we had not been before with our dog. It was so pet friendly. We took Caroline’s suggestion to go to Savage neck dunes and it was the highlight of the trip. There were only two other people on the entire beach. The beach right down from the house is also really nice and private as well. We loved the town of Cape Charles. If you’re looking for a good breakfast spot, we recommend the Cape Charles Coffee House. We also loved The Shanty and Deadrise Pies. If you are looking for something really touristy, this is not it. If you’re looking for a laid-back experience with a cute little town, this is exactly it. We can’t wait to come back!

    Ally2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • A hidden gem! This is the perfect place to get away. It’s quiet and remote, but in 15 minutes you can be is Cape Charles, which has some of the best seafood we’ve tasted, or drive 50 minutes into Virginia Beach which offers you some “city” life. From the beautiful sunrise outside the master bedroom window to the spectacular sunset at the private beach it’s a place to make memories and have some quality family or alone time. Staying at Caroline’s is like being home. She has though of everything you might need to enjoy your stay and provided it for you.

  • What you see listed is what you get--and in this case, that is a very, very good thing! Comfortable home, quiet location, lots of open air and frequent wildlife sightings, and not far from many "things to do" if you still want more.

    AnnaLisa2019-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • Caroline's place is a beautiful, tranquil place for summer decompressing. We had a wonderful time there and she is easy to communicate with. The neighbors are friendly and have lots of information about the area. The sunsets on the little beach nearby are gorgeous and at least one evening we had it totally to ourselves. Hope we can come back someday!

    Mary2019-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • My family had an awesome time at this cottage. It’s just like how it’s described. Very serene and relaxing. My son and I enjoyed our first Kayak experience. The water is also very perfect. Do not miss the sunrise / sunset. They are absolutely spectacular. The savage neck dunes is well worth the visit as well. We will be returning again and spending more time here. Thanks so much for hosting us.

  • My husband, Joey, and I have both grown-up and lived in Virginia all of our lives, but have never visited the Eastern Shore. Two weeks ago, we were both exhausted with work and decided that we wanted to take a break. We didn’t want to go super far, and we ended-up deciding on visiting the Eastern Shore, since that was only an hour and a half from our home in New Kent, VA. This is what led us to find Sandi’s beautiful rental home in Cape Charles. Sandi’s house is perfectly-sized and tucked-away off the side of the road, just miles away from one of the most beautiful Natural Preserves that I’ve ever visited: “Savage Neck Trails”. My husband and I visited these trails during our stay and stood on top of one of the dunes and could see out across the Atlantic. Hands-down, one of the most beautiful moments I’ve ever experienced in my life and I even got to share that moment with my husband. Before visiting Savage Neck Trails, we stopped by Cape Charles Brewery for lunch and four flights of beer. We were greeted and talked to some of the kindest people. We also visited the LOVE sign right off the coast of Cape Charles. The house is so adorable. Sandi takes such good care of it. So clean, washer and dryer, full kitchen, two bedrooms with cozy beds, and a beautifully-lit enclosed porch with a swinging chair. Everything about this weekend was wonderful— including Sandi! She was so helpful and quick to respond to any questions that we had. We will absolutely be back to visit. A huge ‘thank-you’ to Sandi for allowing us to stay in her ‘Hidden Treasure’, because it was exactly that. ☺️

  • This place is perfect and private but close enough for a quick stop to grocery store. Easy to find clear instructions. Perfect place to get away from city noise. Will definitely come again. Great communication with the host.

  • Sandi's Hidden Treasure is a perfect little getaway. Our dogs love playing in the backyard, and it's only a few miles to the beach. The closed in porch is warm and cozy and ideal for some quiet time to relax.

    Marion2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • Two nice sized bedrooms, an adequate bathroom with shower/tub, clean, clean, clean, a cute porch with white Christmas lights on the ceiling, a moderately sized but very adequate kitchen, small living room with very comfortable couch and HD TV. Only about 2 miles from the Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve which was fun for hiking and twice seeing a red fox asleep on a dune - we renamed it Sleeping Fox Dunes. A short drive to good restaurants & beach/marina in Cape Charles and natural wonders in Kiptopeke.

    Scott2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • Sandi's Hidden Treasure is just that - a little treasure. Sweet little getaway. I especially appreciated that my dogs were welcome. I have service dog and 2 pet dogs, and she accepted all three. They had a blast playing with sticks and pine cones in the backyard. We had our boat with us, and there was plenty of space parking it. The little house has a full kitchen, a comfy living room and an amazing closed in deck. Our stay was absolutely perfect and I'd come back to this place anytime when visiting the Easter Shore.

3 acres of quiet that is only 10 minutes from the bustle of Cape Charles. A very clean, 2 story home with an attached garage, yard and deck with table and chairs. Wifi has just been installed and there is a small desk in the living area with a printer. Plenty of parking. Minutes from Chatham Vineyard, Machipongo Trading Co and Quail Cove (organic grocery store). A wonderful getaway with a comfortable home all to yourself.
The house is in transition from being a long-term rental. There are not any decorations/pictures because everything has a fresh coat of paint! A very comfortable, yet minimal, space to sit back and relax. All the mattresses are new and only the twin bed frame is used.
The lot is very quiet and away from the bustle of Cape Charles, yet close and only a short drive. There is the Machipongo Trading Co. just 2 miles away for coffee, breakfast or lunch. Quail Cove is an organic grocery store with necessities such as milk, eggs, local produce, meats and cheeses.
  • We had a lovely stay at Polly's place. It is a perfect weekend getaway location if you are looking for someplace beautiful and quite. The location was good, it's about 20 min drive to the public beaches and roughly an hour or so to Chincoteague.

  • Bluebird Cottage is incredible! We woke up every morning to an incredible sunrise over the water, went out for a quiet kayak ride, then hopped on our bikes to hang out at a nearby winery for the afternoon. Evenings were spent cooking and enjoying a wonderful meal of local fresh caught seafood while watching the sunset slowly over the bay. If you’re looking for a relaxing place to spend a weekend - this is the place! Eddie was an incredible and thoughtful host. He gave great advice on nearby things to do and explore and even took us out to harvest some fresh oysters and show us a secret sandbar beach. He really made us feel welcomed, and we can’t wait to come back again soon!

    Morgan2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • Just like the pictures, but they don’t do it justice. Pictures don’t capture the natural beauty and the serenity of the property. The amenities are as described and right at your finger tips. You can’t beat coffee on the dock in the morning. Priceless.

  • If you're looking for a peaceful home bad while you stay on the eastern shore this is it. Winery down the road, 25 min from a wildlife refuge, 20 min from cape Charles, and an osprey nest you can see from the cottage!

  • Bluebird cottage is a such a wonderful slice of heaven. Our host Eddie was so kind, genuine, accommodating, and generous with us. He made sure we were very comfortable and was available as a host and friend. This space is located next to Eddie’s beautiful home only a couple feet away from a breathtaking dock that looks out on the Chesapeake bay water. The dock has two cozy seats that are perfect for stargazing. You can tell that every decoration and part of bluebird cottage is done with love. The space is very warm and welcoming. The outside deck area is very peaceful and quiet and there is a table and chairs outside that overlooks the trees and nearby water. The cottage was equipped and luxurious with everything you could need: air conditioning, standing shower, clean kitchen stocked with essential spices and condiments, towels, candles, books, a guest book, WiFi, candles to repel bugs, and very sweet bluebird decorations. My boyfriend and I are already planning on coming back!

  • Very comfortable, delicious breakfast! Great for people who really just want to relax and get away from everything. It’s about 20 minutes outside of cape Charles proper, which people should note before booking. We loved how secluded and calm the place was. Beautiful views of the bay

  • I wish that I could provide 6 stars, rather than 5, as above and beyond is an understatement for this location/stay. Although we had to leave much earlier than expected due to family emergencies, MJ was nothing but WONDERFUL. Wonderful is even an understatement. From the positive recommendations (this man knows a contact for ~everything~) to spectacular views to incredible stories from his past work life and current/future adventures and endeavors, our expectations were far exceeded. My boyfriend Jake and I visited for two days, oh how I wish it would’ve been three, and we are truly astounded. We even left with two bags of the coffee (and I’m a coffee snob) that was made in the morning. The final morning was bittersweet, as I knew I had to get back to my family but MJ and the other guests provided me a small home away from home and some satisfaction that I had 2 incredibly well spent, well deserved days. I would choose Laughing King and MJ over and over and over again. Absolutely amazed with this stay. If you’re thinking about staying in/near Cape Charles, in/near Chesapeake Bay, heck staying in/near Virginia, CHOOSE HERE! I am without a doubt looking forward to my return and visiting the 4 other restaurants/shops/ice cream parlor on my list. Thank you for being nothing of the best!

    Emma2019-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • What a lovely retreat! MJ is very helpful in giving the best hotspots to spend your days, if you choose to spend time away from the Laughing King. Highly recommended!!

    Leigh2019-09-28T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I’s stay at the Laughing King was nothing short of wonderful. Just pure bliss and relaxation. Mj himself is very kind and hospitable. He made us amazing breakfasts each morning. The first morning was a yummy quiche with tons of cheese and bacon. The second morning was a French toast casserole, and the third morning we were there he made a sort of breakfast casserole. We stayed in the Cobb Island Suite, and it was very clean and comfortable. It had a breathtaking view of the backyard and bay. We went on this trip as a “babymoon,” and MJ was kind enough to help set us up with a photographer for a maternity shoot—and not just that; he allowed us to take as many pictures around his land as we wished. We had a lovely time, and felt very well taken care of during our stay.

  • Barbara was a wonderful host! My boyfriend and I woke up every morning to the AMAZING smell of a home cooked breakfast. Not only did it smell good but it was hands down the best breakfasts I've ever eaten!! Not only is she amazing at making breakfast but she is awesome at making you feel right at home during your stay. We arrived as strangers but left as friends :). Not to mention the two fluffy friends we made too! Her dogs are super friendly and are not ever a bother while staying. The property was beautiful inside and out as well. We didnt get to try out the pool due to a busy weekend but we definitely will have to come back and make use of it! The room was super cute and cozy as well! This was a very positive experience and I look forward to staying here again!

  • Great little house on a quiet street up the road from Cape Charles. Spotless little home with great decor and a beautiful hostess. The bedrooms were immaculate and prettily pointed and the bed was very comfortable. Wifi is included with a password that she will give you. As it is a bed and breakfast, she offered us a delicious homemade breakfast that she serves you in her breakfast nook. There is a cute in-ground pool in the backyard, but we were not able to use it due to time constraints. She has two medium sized dogs that are very well behaved and do not bother you at all. The property is surrounded by corn fields in the back and down the one side which makes this a very quiet, country atmosphere. Definitely will be staying there again if we travel down to the Eastern shore of Va. again!

    Kristina2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • Staying at Barbara’s house was a special experience. Not only did she prepare an outstanding breakfast every morning but she shared a part of herself, her life, and interesting facts about the towns and the people of the towns. Her stories, her positive outlook on life and her nurturing ways were much admired by my husband and me. Her beautifully well maintained home and sweet tempered, well behaved pets were a bonus.

    Debbie2019-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • If you are headed to the Cape Charles area, I dare say you won’t find a better host, location or value.

    Michael2019-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • Southern hospitality at it's finest! Barbara is a joy and a wonderful host and our interaction with her was the highlight of our trip. Not being a dog lover myself Barbara was very mindful of that but Kiva and Dalton were well behaved. At no time did their presence bother me. Her house was spacious, well appointed, clean, and comfortable. We truly felt at home in Barbara's airbnb and especially appreciated her delicious, cooked breakfasts every morning. Barbara is a hostess who cares about the comfort of her guests on all levels and you leave feeling like a part of her family.

  • I cannot say enough about how wonderful MJ’s place is! From the amazing food he prepared each morning, to the beauty of the surroundings whether inside or out, having the water right out back, the local tips he shared that were so extraordinary, and the incredible hospitality and kindness I received. By far the best AirBnB experience I have had thus far!!

  • We just left and I can’t wait to get back. I secretly don’t want to write a good review about this place because then I could keep it all to myself, but that would be selfish to deprive everyone else of this gem of a getaway. My husband and I came for the weekend and from the moment we arrived, MJ made us feel right at home. This place is gorgeous, and spacious, but at the same time so comfortable and cozy. When MJ said to make yourself at home, he really meant it and we really felt it. Our bedroom was warm, clean, and lovely, the bed very comfortable, and the bathroom big and beautiful! We didn’t hear a peep from our room the whole weekend and enjoyed sleeping in and sipping on the wonderfully strong coffee and delicious breakfasts MJ served us. Each night he had the backyard fire pit set up for us to relax by, which we thoroughly took advantage of. Bonus points for the lovable barn cat who befriended us and kept us company by the fire. MJ had great tips for restaurants and sight seeing. We also made dinner in the kitchen one night which was so much fun! We truly can’t wait to return.

    Lauren2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Comfortable and laid back. The entire stay was relaxing and MJ’s breakfasts are not to be missed. The coffee is hot and delicious. Everything here was just like being at home, if your home had a beautiful view of the water, a small pier, a pool, two screened in porches, a fire pit, a pool table, a chef grade kitchen and lots of room to spread out. Location is off the beaten path, but that’s exactly what you want when you want to get away.

  • My wife and I stayed at The Laughing King for three nights, and everything was great. MJ is a great host, with no fear of butter and a hug for you when you leave. The house was really beautiful, and I can’t say enough about the environment. Softly lapping waves in the bay, bald eagles, and you can see the Milky Way on a clear night. Incredible.

  • We had a wonderful time and couldn't have picked a better spot to stay. We used the pool, the kayaks and had a fun, impromptu evening campfire with all the other guests. We couldn't have asked for more, but we also had delicious breakfasts and excellent ideas great places to visit and eat in the area. This was one of the best B&B's we've visited and that's over many years of experiencing these treasures.

  • Had a wonderful experience at MJ's! We came down from DC to escape the city and explore somewhere new. The accommodations were immaculate, MJ's cooking and hospitality were wonderful, as were the other guests we met. I can't recommend the Laughing King highly enough; do yourself a favor and look no further when booking for your Eastern Shore getaway!

  • Fantastic location, quiet and very clean. With a very friendly host who had all sorts of tips. The breakfast and the coffee were always delicious. Little downer is the air conditioning centrally located on the floor. And the Americans like it a bit cooler. We would book again anytime.

  • While having lunch in Cape Charles, we were notified our accommodations to stay further north were cancelled due to overbooking. Luckily, the Laughing King had an opening and MJ was quick to respond and confirm our visit for two days. The property is very quiet and well maintained with beautiful views of the Chesapeake Bay. Although an older home, it is nicely updated throughout with very modern, clean and secured bedrooms and bathrooms. There was a wonderful quiche breakfast served each morning at 9 am and coffee was available at the touch of a button. I recommend waking early to watch the sun rise and not being afraid to use the fire pit on the premises. We love being outside no matter what the season and this place provided several options to enjoy nature and the outdoor surroundings. Upon arrival, We quickly made our way to the end of the pier to sit and enjoy a glass of wine. The kitchen was available for us to cook a nice dinner which we ate on the enclosed screened porch. There was a full house but evidently everyone else had opted to go out for the evening. We spent the following day at Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve. It was about a 3/4 of a mile walk through the woods on a cleared path which led to a very remote white sandy beach. We took our beach chairs and stayed for the day. Other than a few others walking by, we had the entire beach to ourselves. We also visited Chatham Vineyards, The Island House Restaurant, The Oyster Farm Seafood Eatery, The Distillery, and Watched the Sunset from The Shanty during our short visit. We definitely recommend the Laughing King to others and can't wait to visit again in the near future.

  • This place is a small piece of paradise. My wife and I stayed here for a much needed anniversary getaway and it was exactly what we needed. A great mix of peace and quiet with plenty of outdoor activities nearby. The room and house was immaculate. We joked that a maid must walk around all day cleaning. The grounds were extremely well kept, which growing up on a 150 acre farm i can appreciate how much work goes into that. The private beach was a great added benefit which made for some romantic star gazing the first night. I can’t say enough about the host MJ. He was excellent and we feel like we made a new friend. He cooked breakfast each morning and we had some great conversation. He was great at bringing all the guest together over breakfast and it was like staying with a group of friends. He gave us some tips on where to go that even as frequent cape charles visitors we’d never heard of. The one piece of advice is to choose your room depending on what type of stay you’d like. If you want to be social and be around other guests stay in the house. The rooms are in close proximity of each other and the house is shared space so you will get to know the other guest quickly. If you want to have more privacy I would recommend staying in the tiny house. Both options are great but have different feels. Overall it was a great experience and we would t change a thing. Being only an hour away we will definitely be back on regular basis.

If you’re getting married on the eastern shore and you have a well behaved bridal party this is defiantly the spot for you! The views are stunning and the homemade breakfast is amazing. • Pictures do not do this place justice. It is absolutely gorgeous and you are literally STEPS from a completely private beach. The fully stocked kitchen and outdoor charcoal grill made it possible to cook our own meals. Our two year old enjoyed the provided sand toys as well as streaming services on the TV when we wanted to relax inside. It was a lovely stay and we hope to return!

  • We absolutely loved our stay! Very clean, well stocked with what we needed, amazing views, and the beach is perfection. The water was calm overall which was great for our little girls, they loved having dinner on the covered porch, and kayak rides may be their new favorite activity. It’s a great place to kick back and relax!

  • We have been going to Smith Beach since we were kids. It's our second home. Baywatch is the most beautiful and spacious cottage to stay while you're at Smith Beach. You'll have awesome views of the sunsets.

    Ashley2019-05-29T00:00:00Z
  • it was fantastic and more than expected. Suggest to reach out there before sunset, No cellular network will be there while you check in. So get all information before only. There is a grocery shop but it is 2-3 miles. So have all while going. The grill is not a new one, Suggest to have your own.

  • MJ's inn is homey and comfortable and situated in an unbeatable location: a sizable farm plot right on the Chesapeake. MJ is a kind, thoughtful host and his breakfasts are wonderful.

  • We truly had a great weekend getaway! The Laughing King is the perfect place to unwind, relax, and recharge your batteries. The place and scenery is absolutely beautiful and super zen and M.J is a wonderful host, very accommodating and quick to respond to emails. He cooked a DELICIOUS breakfast both days (lived up to the expectations/reviews we read online) and provided recommendations for restaurants in town. Freshly roasted coffee every morning was great. Highly recommend! We will definitely be back, thank you!

  • MJ is the perfect host. The Laughing King is an absolutely beautiful property and provides travelers with the perfect setting to unwind and rejuvenate. In addition to a clean, warm, inviting home and incredible amenities/activities, MJ was also so accommodating to my grandmother and I in terms of dietary restrictions. He provided a delicious breakfast for us each morning, catering to our unique needs and it did not go unnoticed. I'm definitely looking to return and highly recommend this for your stay!

  • MJ was a wonderful host. Cooked a delicious (dairy-free!) breakfast, gave us some great suggestions about what to visit while there, and created a welcoming environment. The property itself was beautiful and we'll definitely be coming back soon!

  • We truly enjoyed our stay! The room was very comfortable and we slept well, the breakfasts and coffee were a great way to start the day, and your recommendations for places to eat were spot on. Throw in the gorgeous sunrise and the refreshing pool, and it was pretty close to perfect.

    Stephen2019-08-02T00:00:00Z
  • M.J.’s place was gorgeous, full of thoughtful touches from the local soap to the specially roasted coffee. The grounds are amazing, the bay was glorious, the town is super cute and the boat always friendly and accommodating. It’s a hike from California but I’ll be back.

    Honorine2019-07-31T00:00:00Z
  • Lynn and I loved our stay at the Laughing King Retreat. The house and the surrounding grounds were breathtakingly beautiful. MJ is a fantastic host! The weekend breakfasts were so delicious and FABULOUS each day! It was a nice time to interact with the other houseguests. If we’d had more time we definitely would’ve taken the private boat ride around the bay. The bigger suites are amazing - especially the one with the water views. We definitely plan to return and we will highly recommend a stay with you to any of our friends that head that way. Thank you for your hospitality! Two thumbs up!
