Places to stay in Bowes
Hylton house is an elegant two bedroomed traditional stone cottage dating back to the early 16th century, which has been lovingly restored and renovated to the highest possible standards. Nestled among some of the most dramatic and scenic countryside in the North of England. Uniquely located on the doorstep of the Pennine Way, one of England's most historic and stunning national trails, offering some of the finest upland walking in England.
Following extensive refurbishments over the course of 2017, Hylton house presents as one of the finest examples in this area of a traditional stone cottage. With 16th century exposed beams, lime rendered and traditionally plastered walls with traditional features revealed throughout, including two stunning original fireplaces with wood burning stoves. The cottage is fitted with underfloor heating and the finest fixtures and fittings in every room. Bedding is french linen and fine cotton with pure new wool duvets. The kitchen is well equipped and has a dishwasher and a large range oven. * Please note that the beds in bedroom two can be joined to provide one kingsize bed, please request this when you book. Hylton House and Hylton Barn sit side by side in this beautiful village and can be rented together to accommodate parties of 6 - please see my other listing for details.
Bowes, in upper Teesdale, has a surprisingly rich history for a quiet village and, back in the 1830s, it provided Charles Dickens with the inspiration for Dotheboys Hall, which appears in his novel Nicholas Nickleby. Set in the dales, in countryside demarcated by dry stone walls and characterised by the gentle bleating of sheep, Bowes village is a tapestry of historical interest. Dating back to the ruins of the ancient monument, Bowes Castle occupies the north-west corner of the Roman fort, this was first built in 1087 for the earl of nearby Richmond, the castle was strategically important, controlling trade across the Pennines. Managed by English Heritage, the castle is free to visit.
  • Fantastic location, brilliant walks from the door. Cottage was gorgeous. Great cooking facilities and equipment to make fab meals. Go prepared with food etc as the local pub food wasn’t great! Barnard castle great as usual.

  • Staying in this cottage was an absolute pleasure. The cottage it self is perfection, I fell in love with it instantly. There were small gifts for us on arrival which were a lovely gesture. The bath definitely helped sell this cottage to me and it did not disappoint!! Communication with Claire and Steve was minimal throughout my stay however it was not needed, during the booking stage Claire was extremely helpful and provided quick responses. Would definitely like to return!

    Emma2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • What a great find! Thanks for our goodies on arrival and loved the cottage it was stunning!

  • Claire’s home is absolutely stunning and everything is catered for. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a stay there if your after a little getaway like we were. We got out into the great outdoors by taking a three hour walk as recommended by Claire along the Pennine Way, literally starting out just at the end of the back lane past the castle. Very comfy bed and the most beautiful bath which was badly needed after a three hour walk. We made a visit to the pub just down the road for a few drinks and food was lovely. Thank you for a lovely stay, we hope to visit again soon. Janice

Great value cozy twin room in the heart of Historic Barnard Castle. Super-convenient for all beautiful Teesdale has to offer including the world famous Bowes Museum and High Force. A few minutes drive from the A66 so a perfect Lakes stop-off.
This is a second floor flat, accessed by an external and internal flights of stairs. The handsome building is immediately on the hight street, next to commercial businesses with all its market-town hustle and bustle so there is an amount of town centre noise. Probably not suitable for the lightest of sleepers or anyone who struggles with stairs. Otherwise, welcome to my home, it is nice. Cozy John Lewis bedding and luxury electric blankets.
I am right on the high-street. Everything you need is a minute away including the beautiful River Tees, The Witham Arts Centre, The Bowes Museum and much more!
  • Great location on the main street in Barnard Castle. We had a great stay. The host was not there all weekend. If he had been it might have been a bit crowded.

  • Matthew's flat is a very cosy base, very conveniently situated right on the main High Street in Barnard Castle. Matthew is a really hospitable helpful host.

Two comfortable bedrooms, one double, one twin (listed separately) available in a cosy traditional cottage close to the river Tees, Barnard Castle with the Bowes Museum, the 'The Witham' arts centre, Lartington Hall, Eggleston Hall Gardens, High Force waterfall, Hamsterley Forest, Kynren at Auckland Castle, the heart of the Yorkshire Dales and less than an hour from the Lake District. You’ll love my place because of its location in a picturesque village with two welcoming pubs and lovely walks.
My house is located off the main road in a quiet, peaceful back lane overlooking fields with horses, sheep and cows. The bathroom which has a roll top bath and vintage mirror overlooks countryside. The sitting room is furnished with 1930's furniture (including flying ducks over the mantlepiece!), period fireplace, and has a piano guests are encouraged to use. You'll be served a delicious home-cooked breakfast in the spacious breakfast room and I can provide evening meals if required. The bedroom has antique (and comfortable!) bed with fresh linen and towels and a lovely view of the back garden. It's only five minutes from Lartington Hall and 25 minutes from the fantastic Kynren event at Auckland Castle. There are 2 pubs within walking distance that serve real ale and home cooked food. There's also a Post Office and General Shop.
  • The cottage is in a lovely location in a small village. Rachel is very welcoming and is really helpful. Her cooking was fantastic, and the whole experience was great. I would highly recommend Rachel and her cottage.

  • Rachel’s place is very comfortable and Rachel is the most welcoming host that you could wish to meet. Unreservedly recommended

  • Loved my stay, Rachel is just awsome

    Freddy2020-01-15T00:00:00Z
  • As the song goes “simply the best” ! Rachel is a warm, open, and generous, and very very helpful. Truly a Super Host, who goes out her way to make you feel at home in her home, which is not just comfortable, but full of character too. And she is a great cook ! Rachel is such a lovely person, who is very happy to share time and chat, offer help and information, or give you some personal/private space too, if that’s what you want. Perfect. One of the best places I’ve stayed anywhere (and I’ve stayed in a few !), and I cann’t wait to return.

    Steve2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • A superb place to stay in every respect. Rachel is a generous and kind host, and her house is extremely comfortable and stylish. The village has two really nice pubs a short walk away.

    Simon2019-11-15T00:00:00Z
  • Rachel’s B&B is superb. A beautiful little cottage with the perfect cosy, country feel. From the comforting Aga, with wafts of wonderful home cooking coming from the kitchen , to the antique freestanding bath. A comfortable and relaxing bedroom too. Rachel is the perfect host, she’s there to help and advise you if you’ve any queries, but otherwise leaves you in peace. I would highly recommend this B&B for a short break or even an extended stay in a quaint little village set in some beautiful countryside.

Barnard Castle is a beautiful market town. We have lots of lovely unique shops such a Niche Living, Oswells, Ruby and D, Alium and Boho Boo. We have some wonderful attractions in the town including the Bowes Museum and Witham for exhibitions and performances and the TCR hub for outdoor activity and events. Further afield we have Raby Castle, High Force and a number of reservoirs. We are approximately 30 minutes from Darlington and Durham and 60 minutes from the Lake District, Durham coast and Yorkshire Dales. We can give you information about all our local attractions and advice on local restaurants and pubs, nearby Spas and farm shops.
  • Rachel’s place is absolutely gorgeous! We stayed for the weekend to attend our friends wedding in Barnard Castle and cannot recommend No.3 highly enough. It is beautifully furnished, warm welcoming and comfy with exquisite touches like fresh flowers and helpful info. Rach is a fabulously helpful and responsive host. We also felt our stay was really great value for money and will 100% be back. Thank you so much for lending us your lovely home! Alex and Josh ☺️ X

The Stables is a spacious barn conversion with separate large fenced garden, outdoor spaces and BBQ area. Surrounded by open countryside, on the working farm of Raygill near Barnard Castle on the river Tees. The accommodation can sleep up to 20 persons with 4 bedrooms including a master en-suite family room. Set in beautiful Teesdale near Lartington hall, minutes from the historic town of Barnard Castle on the river Tees. We mainly cater for large self catering groups.
Fantastic large space ideal for large groups of friends and family. Plenty of outdoor space in the countryside but only a short walk in to the centre of town. The large fenced guest garden overlooking open countryside with picnic benches is separate from the main building at the bottom of the courtyard and not the garden pictured at the front of the Farmhouse and Adjoining Stables cottage.
Barnard Castle & Lartington in Teesdale is a picturesque rural setting with great outdoor space for walking, cycling, Canoeing, Kayaking and all other outdoor pursuits. Close to a busy historic market town with castle on the River Tees & a French style Chateau called the Bowes Museum. Plenty of great places to eat and drink with lots of boutique style shopping.
  • The host is trying really hard to upgrade the property to a high standard. This will be completed soon. The Pool table was full size and good quality. The kitchen table allowed 8 of us to play Monopoly. House was warm. This is a good house for families. Toilet lights came on automatically. Small item, but great at night. The house easily holds 8. It can hold 16, but the extras are put in a dormitory room which is basic. Bernard Castle is the friendliest town I have come across. Bowes Museum and Loco museum in Shildon great.

    John2020-02-13T00:00:00Z
  • The stables were great for our party of 15 staying for the weekend. The kitchen is large and well equipped, with enough dining space for everyone too! Perfect location, on a scenic farm and only 10 mins drive from Barnard Castle, Peter was a brilliant host! Everyone had a great stay, fantastic spacious house that I would highly recommend!

    Nick2017-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at Raygill Farm for my hen do. The cottage was very spacious, plenty of room for all of us, including in the kitchen and living room. Peter was very friendly and helpful on arrival and when we left. The cottage is in a lovely scenic area and it was nice to be able to walk around the farm and see the lambs and horses. Great place for a nice relaxing visit. Thanks Peter!

    Helen2017-06-04T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fantastic weekend. The Stables are huge ! Our party was made up of 16 across all ages, we had plenty of room and didn't feel as though we were on top of each other. The facilities were good, everything you need really. The location of the stables is on a farm, which is brilliant, with plenty of horses and a couple of friendly pigs. One of the farmers even brought a baby lamb over to show to the children in our group, they loved it. The Stables are about 20 minutes easy walking through pretty woodland to Barnard Castle, well worth a look. Throughout, Peter communicated really well with us. He made it clear that if we needed anything we only had to give him a call. We'll definitely be back in the future. Good luck Peter

  • Lovely, comfortable and spacious house ideal for large parties. Lots of great walks in the local area and a very welcoming host.

    Bettina2017-03-26T00:00:00Z
  • Great place for a large group, the house is well provisioned for cooking with big fridge freezer and plenty of space to cook and eat. Pool table is a nice addition and we were able to catch the rugby on the big screen before heading out for the evening. Peter's communication is fantastic, we spoke multiple times during booking and I knew exactly what to expect. He even helped us book some activities and check-in was easy. Would stay again.

  • I really loved the time I spent there with my three boys. Fantastic location lots to explore. The static itself is really comfortable and an amazing space with loads of character. Penny and Alan are fantastic hosts who are always available to provide local knowledge and great ideas for things to do. I’m really looking forward to the next time I can stay there.

    Michael2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Peace and quiet, panoramic views of rolling hills and farmland, very clean caravan, great value.

    Ellie2019-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • We are a family of four with two young boys and just had a brilliant week in this caravan! The decor is a bit dated so if you are after modern interiors, look elsewhere. But if you want a holiday in a perfect location with panoramic views of hills, fields, sheep and open skies then try this out. The caravan was lovely and clean and had everything we needed to be comfortable and self cater. It is sat to the side of the main farm house but is not overlooked which made it a good combo for ease of access but private. We had some great walks from the front door and explored the local stream and hills without hardly seeing anyone else. Ten minutes drive to Barnard Castle which is quaint and has quite a good selection of shops and a Morrisons. If you holiday here you have to go look at High Force Waterfall- its beautiful. Would also recommend Richmond as a lovely town to walk about. Castles everywhere!

    Charis2019-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic location, views and local pub. All we needed for a family holiday with young children.

  • Doug and I spent 4 days and enjoyed everyinutw. A lovely location and the caravan was clean and very comfortable. Penny and Co were very hospitable and the tea coffee and cake were a welcome touch. Would definately book again. Bev & Doug Sheppard

    Bev2019-07-26T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely caravan. Felt really private and secluded. The inside decor is a touch dated, but that doesn't make any difference. It was the perfect spot for walking the dog and visiting the dales. It was the remote break we wanted. Penny and the guys were all really kind and help full.

  • This is a lovely place to stay. The flat is very well situated, very clean with all the things you need for a nice day out. The flat is very well equipped and very comfortable. There are lots of great walks on that can be done from the doorstep. The town itself is great - we timed our trip for a night out at The Witham Comedy Club - which runs monthly. If you've never had a weekend in Barnard Castle, this is the ideal place to stay and to investigate from. Top class.

  • Beautiful place. Really cute flat.

    Charles2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • This place is a real find and the only regret is that we did not stay longer. Warm and cosy, easy to get to on public transport and within a few minutes walk of the town centre and the Bowes Museum. The flat has everything you need and more. Every item is a work of art and a pleasure to use. The bed is the most comfortable we have ever slept in and it is a real treat to sit by the shuttered windows eating breakfast and watching the world go by. The shower is great too. Stay for a relaxing break, for the culture of the Bowes museum or on a walking holiday and you will not be disappointed.

  • Delightfully quirky flat, furnished with excellent taste and so very cosy and welcoming. Situated in the heart of Barnard Castle and yet still peaceful and a real joy. The flat was sparkling clean, Myra responded to our questions immediately and was very helpful. The bed was huge and extremely comfortable.. We loved staying there and will certainly return.

    Julia2019-11-09T00:00:00Z
  • A real gem in a fantastic location which is super cosy and decorated to perfection. I can highly recommend this to anyone travelling within the area. It is much bigger than the photos suggest and the bed is a dream. The apartment is just superb and Myra was a fantastic host. We will definitely be back. Parking is free on the street and we brought our dog with us - there are plenty of walks and green spaces very near by. Thanks Myra!

The village of Bowes is in the centre of wonderful walking country and close to the lovely market town of Barnard Castle. We have a lovely South facing back garden which is secure and has been described by our guests as a 'suntrap'. There is a lockable covered passageway which is ideal for storing bikes etc
This is a beautiful cottage, which is on the doorstep of the Pennine Way and yet in the middle of a lovely village with a great pub. The cottage is spacious and well equipped for a great holiday.

We are located in beautiful Baldersdale, the half way point of the Pennine Way, which runs right past the Hay Loft making it a perfect stop off for weary walkers! It has been recently refurbished and sleeps up to 8 people in 3 bedrooms. There are shared facilities including a shower room and everything you would need to rustle up an energy packed meal. However if you don't fancy cooking meals can be provided at a small additional cost. Please note the price (£25) is per person per night
  • This is a perfect camping barn if you are walking the Pennine way. We stayed in December, and it is fairly chilly but then we are in the great outdoors so bring warm clothes and a good sleeping bag if you are coming in the winter! The fire is nice and everything works as it should. Mr Nibbles (the cat) was a welcome visitor.

  • Great place in an amazing location. The view at night was spectacular. Lovely wood burner for heat source, yummy breakfast with home laid egg, and sweet kitten for company. Hosts are very friendly. I’d recommend this for any walker or someone passing by.

  • Thank you so much Vicky & Paul. Clove lodge is such a beautiful place, hosts are very welcoming and the fire was pre lit ready for us arriving. An amazing property with stunning views and walks around the reservoir just a short distance away. Thanks for having us and our dogs x

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The accommodation is spacious, stylish and immaculately clean.

  • Very nice property with a peaceful and beautiful rural setting. The hot tub and sauna were lovely and we very much enjoyed our stay. Many thanks!

    Jonathan2019-12-23T00:00:00Z
  • The place is truly special but the location and scenery really stand out. You cannot pit a price on having a waterfall crash down as you sit in a sauna on a cold winters night. A true gem of a place.

    Andrew2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • Highly recommend.. Beautiful cottage and fabulous walks. Will definately go back.

    Lisa2019-10-25T00:00:00Z
  • My fiancé and I stayed with our two pups for 3 nights and we had the best time. It was so blissful and peaceful. It was an amazing escape and the hot tub and sauna were put to good use. I loved the fire too. The dogs had lots of long walks and places to explore! The local pub was a short 10 min drive and had lovely home made food!! Hosts were fab and really couldn’t do enough for us! Can’t wait to come back.

  • Lovely cozy cottage

    Rachel2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Howgill Cottage is a lovely cottage in amazing surroundings! When we went it was rainy and windy so the fire was very helpful in keeping us warm! Tony and Peta provided some cute touches e.g. hot chocolate, cake and more, which we thought was lovely. Overall a wonderful stay, well worth coming back in the summer to explore the area more!

    Lesley2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • It was a compact space but ideal for two and a dog. Our hosts were exceptionally helpful and thoughtful with lovely treats waiting for us on our arrival to celebrate the New Years. There is no signal for calls or WiFi inside the cottage, however outside it is fine. We enjoyed the open fire and having a nice rural break with a good excuse to turn our phones off after a busy Christmas.

    Lisa2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • Such a relaxing time at Tony and Peta's cottage. They weren't there to greet me but I had very clear instructions. I only stayed for one night with my two dogs but we were so cosy in the lovely cottage and the fire was just perfect. Everything we needed was there and it's such a quiet spot I slept really well. Fantastic, will definitely be back

    Sam2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • Great little place with thoughtful touches. A lovely break away.

    Elizabeth2019-11-25T00:00:00Z
  • I had a lovely two nights in Howgill Cottage. It was spotlessly clean, with lovely touches like a full wood and coal bin for the fire, scones, and milk and butter in the fridge. So cosy and welcoming! Peta and Tony were great, very helpful with directions and local info. I’ll come again!

    Amelia2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • A charming cottage where you feel happily remote despite its being easy to find. Very friendly welcome. Scones, jam, dog biscuits and the fire lit on arrival. A pint of milk and some butter in the fridge. Tea and proper coffee and a cafetiere. The main living area is a very comfortable bedsit and a good size for a single traveller or a couple, and a dog. The separate kitchen has everything you could possibly need, in the way of crockery, cutlery, utensils and appliances, for a short to medium stay. The separate shower room is very nice indeed, has good water pressure and is spotlessly clean. Books, maps and local information are provided and I think Tony and Peta have quite a lot of local knowledge too. I know this area pretty well and would/will book again without hesitation.

    Clare2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at Thelma & Gordon's cottage whilst visiting relatives and house hunting in the nearby area. The location was absolutely perfect and the 10 minute walk into Barnard Castle was perfect for us to enjoy a drink or two in the evening and try the restaurants in 'Barney'. Thelma provided very good, clear instructions prior to check in and communication was always prompt. The Cottage was spotlessly clean and really cosy. The home made cakes and scones were a lovely touch and it made a nice change to find some fresh milk in the fridge too! I can't say much more other than I fully recommend the cottage, its clean, comfortable, well furnished & ideally located to explore Barnard Castle and surrounding areas. Parking nearby to the cottage was readily available and free.

    Sharon2019-11-25T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is comfortable and clean with everything you might need in a home from home. The only thing you might miss is an Internet connection, it was clear in the description that it was not included though. The area is very quiet and has handy on street parking just across the road. Thelma had thoughtfully left fresh milk coffee and teabags along with some cake and biscuits, lovely after a few hours driving. Town was a short 5 minute drive away, and within walking distance of about 20 mins, we had no difficulty finding parking even on a busy Saturday in town. We would definitely stay at this cottage again.

    Jacqueline2019-11-18T00:00:00Z

  • Sue & Arthur were wonderful hosts, friendly and welcoming from the start. They have a lovely property and our room was perfect for our one night stay. Enjoyed a lovely meal at Blagroves House Restaurant in Barnard Castle, worth booking. Whilst there is a bit of a wait for the food (as everything is cooked fresh to order), it is well worth it. Would definitely recommend Sue & Arthurs place to anyone wishing to stay in the area.

Scargill Castle nestles in the beautiful Teesdale landscape close to the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District National Park and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Built in 1560 on the site of an earlier medieval castle, it has recently been restored from a crumbling ruin into a delightful retreat for two, combining historic character with all the cosiness and comfort of the 21st century. Private parking leads through a gate into your own sheltered courtyard gardens, created from the old Tudor manor house. From the garden, the arched entrance hall leads into a dining hall with long oak table; take a moment to admire the ornate roof beams carved from oak trees felled over 400 years ago! From here you can wander into the sunny kitchen which overlooks the Tudor gardens. The stone spiral stairs lead up to the living room with oak floors and a wood burning stove set within a Tudor fireplace. Two deep set windows pierce the ancient thick walls and overlook the Tudor courtyard gardens to the east and the rolling landscape of Teesdale to the west. Further up the spiral staircase is the romantic bedroom with double bed on an oak floor adorned with Persian rugs. The rich colours reflect the Tudor love of golds, reds and rich greens which are highlighted with mood lighting enhancing the exposed timber beams above. Windows to east and west provide views of the walled garden and the high moors beyond. This holiday at a glance Sleeps two guests. One bedroom and one bathroom. Wood burning stove. Enclosed, courtyard gardens. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome at the property (small additional charge per dog). The property is situated on the edge of a working farm so please keep your dogs under careful control when outside the castle grounds. Two designated parking spaces are available. Minimum of a three night stay. Additional features Ideal for a Romantic Retreat. Roll top bath. Window seat. The historic building means that surfaces can be uneven and rooms are spread over 3 floors with the bedroom on the top floor and the bathroom on the ground floor. Original exposed, roof beams. Garden furniture, barbecue and herb and vegetable garden. For an extra special treat why not get local cook Rachel Markham to make you a Tudor meal at Scargill? Click here for details. Stone floors to ground floor with underfloor heating, central heating, solid oak floors to first and second floors, antique furniture. Digital TV, DVD player, iPod Dock. Microwave, fridge/freezer/ dishwasher, electric cooker. Laundry room in external byre with washing machine and tumble dryer. Attractions and nearby amenities Among many of the excellent places to eat and drink is The Morritt Arms at Greta Bridge, an 18th and 19th century coaching inn, but the quirkiest and a ‘must visit’ is the Milbank Arms in Barningham, one of only eleven pubs in England which still have no bar! Barnard Castle has a number of eating places - why not try Blagraves on The Bank, once a stopping off point for Oliver Cromwell? Further afield, the picturesque village of Romaldkirk has the Rose and Crown for delicious lunches and evening meals or just enjoy a drink in front of the roaring fire. Scargill is very rural with beautiful walks from the front door, many linking with the Pennine Way. Maps will be provided so that you can find your own route. Teesdale's landscape was painted by J.M.W. Turner, Thomas Girton, John Sell Cotman and Thomas Herne and it inspired the poetry of Sir Walter Scott and the less appreciated poetry of local man Richard Watson. You are also within a short drive of the Yorkshire Dales, The Lake District and the North Pennines where amazing walks abound.

Perfect for a romantic getaway! Hylton Barn is a stunning one bedroomed barn conversion, set in the grounds of the historic Bowes Castle, having been spectacularly designed and renovated to the highest possible standards. Nestled among some of the most dramatic and scenic countryside in the North of England, uniquely located on the doorstep of the Pennine Way, one of England's most historic and beautiful national trails, offering some of the finest upland walking in England.
Hylton Barn's renovations and design were inspired by trips to Scandinavia. This beautiful two storey stone structure is one of the loveliest examples in this area of a traditional built barn. It has exposed beams, lime rendered and traditionally plastered walls and many features revealed throughout. A fabulous cast iron wood burning stove awaits those cold wintry nights, and the polished stone floor is fitted with underfloor heating to keep you cosy too. The barn is bright, light and spacious, and perfectly placed on the Pennines for a long walk followed by a cosy snuggle in the evenings. Bedding is french linen and fine cotton with pure new wool duvets. The kitchen is well equipped and has a dishwasher and a small oven. Hylton House and Barn sit side by side in this superb area and can be rented together for parties of 6 - please see my other listing for details.
Bowes, in upper Teesdale, has a surprisingly rich history for a quiet village and, back in the 1830s, it provided Charles Dickens with the inspiration for Dotheboys Hall, following his stay, which appears in his novel Nicholas Nickleby.
  • Lovely place, clean modern and well thought out decor, location is unreal being on the door step of castle. I like it so much I've already booked a return trip!

  • Claire’s barn is impossible to fault. It is a beautifully crafted space with stylish and thoughtful decor and generous touches. It is furnished and equipped to a very high standard. The location is great for exploring the Durham and Yorkshire Dales and is on the Pennine Way providing great walking from the front door. It would be lovely to visit in Summer and picnic in the Castle grounds. The view from the bedroom window is stunning! Thanks Claire.

  • From our first step into the lovely barn we loved it. The views (castle, landscape), the many windows, the colours, the materials...It was very comfortable and we felt "at home", when we came back from our hiking tours in pennines or Yorkshire dales. Thank you very much for hosting us, we missed nothing an enjoyed our stay very much.

    Wolfgang2019-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • We have previously stayed in Hylton House the property next door also available through Claire and Steve. We saw the renovations start on Hylton Barn and said when it was finished we would have to visit if it was going to be half as nice as Hylton House. And sure enough we weren’t disappointed. A beautiful well thought out barn conversation with everything you need for a comfortable stay. It’s so peaceful. The decor and finish is exceptional. The views are second to none. Who can say they have a castle in their garden. The ancient unicorn pub is a stones throw away where the bar staff will greet you as a local. Barnard Castle is 10 minutes drove away where you can buy everything f you’d ever need. we cant wait to return.

The highlight was definitely the included breakfast which was absolutely the best I have had in my 2.5 months of travel. Would recommend based on that alone, but the entire stay was lovely.

Beautifully located, Rose Cottage is a cosy Dales cottage & 274 yrs old! With a large working fireplace & beams, it provides a comfortable family home & could easily accommodate 2 families or a group of friends. It is ideal for guests with children & dogs. Set on the river Tees, Cotherstone was voted one of the top 10 English villages. Only 4 miles to Barnard Castle & 2 miles to Lartington Hall, a popular wedding venue. It is close to the Lakes & ideal for breaking a trip to & from Scotland.
My cottage is quirky and decorated with vintage finds and local art. There is a family kitchen, fully equipped with both modern and vintage kitchenalia. It has a huge stone sink which is over 100 years old! There is a range cooker and a large fridge freezer. On your arrival there will be juice, milk and fresh bread/ bakes. There is tea and coffee, sugar and basics for cooking such as oil, salt, pepper & spices-all fresh and usually kindly donated by previous quests! There is a small table and a few chairs, ideal for breakfast. A large pine dresser is filled with glasses, plates, cups and saucers, cake plates and vintage china. There are plastic cups for children, pots, pans and baking trays and lots of salad / serving bowls. It's a good sized kitchen for a cottage and great for socialising! The dining room has a table which seats 8 and a large bookcase with a good selection of local books and maps & games, There is an open fireplace filled with logs and a gas cast iron stove. With beamed ceilings and a big open fire, the living room has comfortable sofas and arm chairs. There is a CD player and lead to attach your phone to for your own choice of music. In the old school cupboard there are 100's of DVDs ( the TV has an integral DVD player). There is a wonderful large open fire. We always set the fire ready to light and leave logs, coal and matches. The fire is cosy and guests always enjoy the ambiance it creates. There is a downstairs loo and laundry /boot room. Upstairs there are 4 bedrooms. Each bed has a good mattress, doubles are memory foam. Beds are made up with fresh linen and clean throws and good duvets. We supply towels. Each bedroom is furnished with care, with vintage rugs and furniture. There is a large family bathroom with both a bath and shower. Outside there is a small garden and patio area. There is a BBQ, deck chairs and jali table for good weather. During the summer months there will be fresh herbs in the garden. The garden leads to a beautiful river- great for walking and there is a football pitch. It is child and dog friendly. There is a travel cot and a high chair and baby seat for a chair. There are dog bowls for dog guests. There is an extra Z bed for an extra single guest and a sofa bed, also for a single guest so I could accomodate 9/10 guests if for example children shared rooms and used the Z beds.
The location is beautiful and Cotherstone is a pretty and quiet village just 4 miles away from Barnard Castle. There is an excellent pub opposite the cottage which serves good fresh food and reals ales. You may want to book in advance so check out the Fox and Hounds, Cotherstone link online. There is a small local shop, well stocked with basics and a post office inside. They sell the local Cotherstone cheese and a good selection of breads & bakes. The Red Lion pub is in the middle of the village. It is a traditional Dales Pub and serves good ale. The pub was in the 90's comedy 'The Fast Show'. Ted and his boss, the Toff used to drink there in the famous 'Ted' sketch. It's worth a visit for a pint. There is a good playground for children with some great equipment and cycle track. It is at the far end of the village near the church. There are walks from Cotherstone to Romaldkirk and Barnard Castle. The nearby High Force, the biggest waterfall in England and Low Force waterfalls are well worth a visit at anytime of the year. The area is a brilliant place and base from which to explore the Yorkshire Dales or the Lakes. If you are travelling from or to Scotland it is an ideal place to stop off and break the journey for a day or two. Teesdale is a wonderful working Dale, unspoilt & outstanding countryside with waterfalls and moorland. It is fabulous for walkers, and a magical place for children and guests with dogs. Cotherstone really is a perfect place to holiday with dogs- I have 4 and they love their walks in Teesdale. We are very close to popular weddings such as Lartington Hall, The Morritt Arms and Headlam Hall Spa and Jersey Farm. If you are visiting from a city, coming to Cotherstone and Teesdale might be like stepping back in time. The location is beautiful and the pace slow. It's a different lifestyle. My guests who book the cottage for just one or two nights usually wish they had stayed longer or plan to return in reviews. I am sure you will like Cotherstone and will be impressed with the countryside & the people :)
  • Had a family stay for my Mums 60th. The cottage and surrounding scenery was beautiful. Some lovely nice touches from the host for my Mums birthday including fresh flowers, bunting and a home made cake. Would definitely recommend for a nice relaxing break.

  • Andrea's place was quaint, comfortable and cosy. We loved our stay. It's in the perfect location to explore the many walks nearby and then snuggle around the open fire in the evening, before retiring to one of the very comfy beds. Andrea had left us a delicious cake, baked bread and coffee which was a really lovely welcome. We would really recommend staying here!

  • Andrea is a wonderful host. The cottage is amazing. Excellent all around.

    Ruth2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay for one night at Andrea's Rose Cottage, and it had everything we needed. It has the characteristic charm of an old style cottage, its very spacious and comfortable, had everything we needed from cooking utensils to blankets, towels and a roaring fire (and a few extra delights left by Andrea), and was in a lovely quiet location. Andrea provided all the information we needed and check in and parking was super simple- she even was kind enough to let us check in a couple of hours early. No negatives at all, really pleased with our choice and I would definitely recommend the cottage! Thanks Andrea!

    Kate2020-02-29T00:00:00Z

Fantastic countryside holiday cottage with a shared leisure facility which has a hot-tub, swimming pool, gym and games room. In beautiful Teesdale in the North Pennines, this is a perfect place to escape and unwind.
  • A beautiful countryside setting, really easy to unwind, relax and feel at home. Chris was a great host, friendly and on hand to help. Our family particularly enjoyed the couple of private hours a day in the pool and games room, as well as the garden, chickens and trampoline. We’d definitely go again.

  • Perfect location from which to enjoy the wonderful market town of Barnard Castle and to strike out into the gorgeous Teesdale countryside. You are slap-bang in the middle of this busy town, but the flat was quiet and a perfect place from which to observe the activity below. The flat was perfect for our dog and allowed us lots of lovely walks along the Tees and nearby 'Demesnes'. We'll definitely be back.

This unusual house sleeps four very comfortably and offers the amazing views of the River Tees and Barnard Castle's castle! Perfect location for walking, bird watching, photography and touring the wonderful North East and in particular Teesdale and Weardale. Barnard Castle is a lovely town to wander around and the centre is only a 5 minute walk away. Perfect location for Kyren and local weddings. The house was converted in 2016 from The White Swan and is a very comfortable space.
The house is Grade II Listed but with modern refurbishment inside. The space is furnished in a vintage style with original pieces. The entrance is on the ground floor which leads to a cloakroom and the lounge/dining area. Views of the River Tees and the castle. Downstairs is reached by paddle stairs (hence the concern about young children in the house) and one of the quirky features of this home! The stairs lead to a comfortable area which is currently used as a cinema room with beanbags to lounge on! On the first floor there is a modern kitchen (fridge freezer, washing machine and hob/oven), a bathroom and bedroom. The second floor houses the master bedroom with en suite and a room with air mattress and wardrobe space.
Barnard Castle is a market town in Teesdale. Within the town are a selection of independent and high street shops together with a Morrisons supermarket. A larger selection of shops can be found in Bishop Auckland and Darlington. The town is full of interesting places to visit: the castle, Bowes Museum (built in the style of a French chateau opened in 1892) and for music and theatre lovers there is The Witham. You are close to High Force and Low Force, fantastic walks, Raby Castle and much, much more.
  • Kate is an excellent host and nothing is too much trouble. The house is gorgeous with lots of lovely little touches and the 'Cave' is an especially cozy space. Located just below the castle it's very convenient for walking to the high street. But I would happily sit in the window and watch the river all day. I would definitely recommend staying in this lovely, cozy cottage.

    Emily2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • A great base for Barnard Castle and Teesdale

    Charlotte Mendes2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great and unique place to spend time. The views over the river taking in the bridge and castle are outstanding. The house is exceptionally well finished, its warm and cosy. Everything is clean, with only sensible house rules. We'd certainly stay again.

    Ian2019-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • A really interesting & well appointed house in an attractive town. Bath & shower rooms are all exceptional. For our older children the cavern was a great place to watch a film. Great to sit in the chair by the lounge window watching the Tees go by. Flexible accommodation with plenty of room for 5 though dining table I recall seats 4 but we were eating out (The Three Horseshoes served good quality well priced food & popular - we had to book on a Wednesday night in late October). The house probably wouldn’t suit the infirm or family with very young children. Kate is a friendly & helpful host. Overall disappointed to leave & would definitely return if the opportunity arises.

  • A magical house with the most incredible views of the castle and river! Perfect base to explore the area, river walks, shops, castles and the spectacular high force waterfalls. Super comfortable and beautifully kept, we loved our stay!

A brand new modern detached property. It is warm and airy with a spacious feel to it. I am situated in a cul de sac which is quiet with friendly neighbours. • Goldsborough view cottage is a cosy, quaint little cottage in a beautiful location, overlooking Hury reservoir. Welcoming touches such as fresh flowers, scones, cake, butter, milk etc. make you feel at home straight away and Tony and Peta are very helpful and keen to make your stay as great as possible. The cottage was very clean and had all the equipment we needed during our stay. The beds were also very comfortable and the cottage was warm and cosy, despite the rainy, windy weather outside. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this cottage for a perfect 'get away from it all' break and have already booked to return for another stay!

  • The room was comfortable, clean and light, with a selection of hot drinks and a slice of cake on arrival. The food was excellent and a great choice of options, including vegetarian. Most importantly, the hosts were friendly and welcoming. I would certainly stay there again.
