Wow, Glass-Walled Design Bungalow near University of Texas

#1 Airbnb in Austin according to Architectural Digest! Bring the outdoors in! Sliding glass walls open to the serene yard of this redesigned '50s bungalow, just 3 miles from the center of downtown. Hide away and nestle in to your own fenced sanctuary and a bubbling chromatherapy bath…or share a relaxed, al fresco evening meal at the 12-foot outdoor dining table and share stories around the fire pit under Texas stars. (NO PETS. Infants & well-behaved CHILDREN OVER 8 ONLY.) Completely re-imagined by a designer/architect, this 1950's house was stripped to the studs to be recreated into a modern oasis of cool just ten minutes to the epicenter of downtown Austin. Appointed with every comfort, the home sports sliding glass walls to the backyard to allow the inside out and the outside in. An expansive living room gets even larger with the view to the backyard's minimalist "mound of grass" and the communal fire-pit beyond. A massive 12 foot long dining table adds casual chic to any grill-out dinner party you may want to throw under the Texas stars, or just a leisurely cool morning coffee. Just a step up from the living room and a theatre-style kitchen and serving bar allows even the most gourmet chef to have their crack at cooking anything from the local Whole Foods headquarters. Every amenity is available for the food fanatic, from induction cook-top to espresso machine. Two bedrooms on either side of a long entry hallway provide great privacy for a two-couple retreat. The queen bed guest suite has its own direct access to the backyard with a wall of glass, and its own accompanying bath. The king bed master bedroom is a technical delight, with a ceiling mounted, flat-panel TV that rotates for viewing in bed or in the chroma therapy air jet bathtub. A separate shower stall with digital controls sports both a 12" rain shower head and a hand-held shower wand. The master bathroom, like the kitchen extension is completely clad in a warm zen-inducing bamboo. (NOTE: This house can be rented with the neighboring house for large get-togethers up to 10 people, and the two together provide TONS of outdoor entertainment space including two dining areas, a hot tub, the fire pit, and outdoor spa shower with a waterfall head. If interested search for the listing "Hip Oasis, Bamboo Forest & Hot Tub." to see the other. Inquiries for a dual rental will receive a special price for the two together.) Guests have the run of the place including the completely renovated 50's house, and an extremely private fenced back yard including a huge entertainment space with a 12 foot long dining table, a Weber gas grill for outdoor cooking, the fire-pit (wood provided), and the spa-like outdoor shower. The owner resides in a studio behind this property and comes and goes like the wind via the side yard discretely. He is available via text and happy to help expeditiously, but in general guests have all the alone time they want or need! Windsor Park is a laid-back Keep Austin Weird neighborhood where, like Austin, kinda anything goes! Trendy spots nearby include the parks, running trails and pools at Mueller, Alamo Drafthouse Theater, Halcyon Coffee, B.D. Riley's Irish Pub, East Austin Yoga, The kNomad Global Bar, Kirby Lane (pancakes!) and the amazing Paco's Tacos, just to name a few. The eco-friendly, HEB grocery center (.25 miles from the house) has everything from Starbucks & Liquor, to pizza & gas just moments away. There are busses which are frequented by the students in the area, and the nearest light rail is at Highland Mall just 1 mile away. However, like most of Austin, the most convenient option is to have a car. This property is used by the owner for entertaining his own family and guests. It's in tip-top shape and decked out with his personal collection of art and books and a chef's dream kitchen. For the caring and refined guest, this house is an incredible repose and a perfect way to really live in a "Keep Austin Weird" neighborhood but also be accommodated in luxury. The television in this house is entirely driven by digital content and does not include basic cable.

Central East Austin is a diverse and dynamic neighborhood that is just a few minutes from downtown and yet still quiet. In addition to offering of some of Austin's best restaurants and music venues, it also has important history to explore. In the last century, highway 35 was a tool of segregation, with east (of 35) Austin providing a rich community for African Americans. See how this history lives on through a plethora of old and new businesses is this burgeoning neighborhood! There is a parking spot that you are welcome to use directly in front of the house and there is also plenty of street parking with no permitting or street cleaning concerns. The closest B-Cycle station is a 15 minute walk away at Victory Grill on 11th St. Many of the 6th St restaurants and bars are a 10 minute walk as well. If you would prefer not to walk, there are a selection of ride share services such as RideAustin (our favorite), Lyft, or Uber. The street has two names, Hamilton Ave and Richard Overton Ave. Depending on your map source you may see either one pop up. Richard Overton is the oldest living American and American World War II veteran at 112 years of age. He lives down the block where be bought a house after the war ended.

Your guide to Austin

Introduction

The Texas capital is a mecca of everything the state does best: inventive cuisine served from its food trucks; live entertainment celebrated at festivals touting music, tech, and extreme sports, and of course the all-essential SXSW; and plenty of outdoor experiences that call for biking, hiking cycling, swimming, bouldering, and kayaking year-round. Downtown Austin is the center of it all, with a thriving arts and shopping scene by day and lively nightlife after the sun sets, especially on Sixth Street and in the Warehouse District. Take a step back in time in South Austin, where beloved restaurants and classic architecture surround the biggest city park. The fast-growing neighborhood of East Austin, an eclectic enclave of food and boutiques, is another great spot to explore.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Austin

Austin boasts 300 sunny days a year, but there’s no denying that the city sizzles in the summer, with July being the hottest month. Average high temperatures are in the 90s Fahrenheit from June through September, with lows only getting into the 70s. Winter is a far more temperate season, with highs in the upper 50s to low 70s and lows dipping into the upper 30s. Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons for a vacation, with highs usually in the 70s and 80s and lows in the 50s to 60s. The clearest skies arrive between July and November, with the highest average days of rain in May.

Top things to do in Austin

Texas Capitol

The Texas state house is as grand in stature as the state is in size, earning a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and being declared a National Historic Landmark in 1986. Made of sunset red Texas granite, the three-story capitol building is the largest in the nation — yes, it’s more than 14 feet higher than the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC. But the true beauty is in the details, such as the ornate oversized brass door hinges and chandeliers with light bulbs that spell out “T-E-X-A-S.” Take a free half-hour tour or pick up a map to take a self-guided tour.

Congress Avenue Bridge Bats

No bat signal needed! One of the most stunning sights in town is this fascinating natural phenomenon as between 750,000 and 1.5 million bats — the largest urban colony on the continent — fly out from under the Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge every night at dusk.

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

Founded by Lady Bird Johnson and actress Helen Hayes in 1982, the 284-acre University of Texas at Austin Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is committed to preserving the state’s native plants, with more than 900 species on site. There’s also an arboretum with more than 70 kinds of Texas’ native trees.
