Places to stay in Slanesville
Rustic, 100 year old 1 rm primitive cabin in West Virginia along the Cacapon River. Beautifully restored with wood stove, loft, & screened in porch. Access to 214 acres of private mountain land & over 1/4 mile of river frontage plus 1/2 acre pond, trails, and private shooting range. This cabin is completely off grid. It has NO electricity or plumbing/running water, but does have a Porta-John serviced weekly. Renter will be cabin camping so pack accordingly; tents also welcome.
The rental is a historic cabin with the exterior recently renovated to maintain its rustic look. It is suitable for outdoorsman, couples wanting a more rugged romantic getaway in private, or for family camping. Note that some building materials (stacks of lumber and barn boards) are still on premises from the renovations. The cabin has a large screened in porch and an open floor plan on the main floor with a small loft overlooking it. Four people can comfortably camp in the cabin. Guests can throw down a sleep pad and sleeping bag on the floor or in the loft or bring a cot. There are two cots and a small hammock strung between beams inside for your use. There is also a Porta-John serviced weekly outside the cabin. The cabin is completely off grid and does not have running water/plumbing/electricity. It is primitive camping in style, but that means you will see creepy crawly things like spiders and possibly even a mouse. You need to pack like your are camping. Also, it is mandatory you bag out all waste (HUMAN or otherwise). I recommend bringing a camp toilet if you do not want to use the Porta-John. Due to the water table essentially at ground level, we take proper disposal of human waste very seriously because it will rapidly pollute the ground water. On very humid days you may be able to here a distant crackling sound caused by the high tension powerlines that cross the property. Don't worry, that is normal. The wood stover is now operational for the season. Please familiarize yourself in advance of proper use of a wood stove and specifically the damper (YouTube). If you intend to use the wood stove, please bring your own firewood (wood may or may not be there), make sure the fire is completely out before leaving the cabin, and do not split wood inside or on the porch. The gas range is not currently operational. Please do not try to use it. If you would like to make a fire outside, there is a camp fire ring in front of the porch with some benches and logs to sit on and a pile for wood in front of it. Do not cut or damage live trees for wood. Feel free to bring a grill, generator, battery operated fan (it's hot and humid in the summer), or other convenience. If you want to just tent camp, that is perfectly fine too and I recommend using the upper campsite for that since it offers an excellent view and privacy.
You are in the mountains of West Virginia. People are friendly and respectful and enjoy their privacy and expect the same courtesy. Although very private, you will occasionally see a neighbor passing the cabin en route to their property at the far end of the access road. If you head to the back 164 acres, you will pass through a small portion of private property owned by a neighbor. You have permission to use the access road, but be respectful of their property and camp site/cabin.
  • Jonathan is a really nice guy

  • I love this rustic cabin. It’s fun to be off grid for a couple days. This is such a peaceful place. Weather hiking or just being on the river, it’s just a great escape. Thanks ! Will return soon.

    Michael2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time! It was COLD but our second night we almost got sweat out of the cabin by the stove! If you're arriving late like we did (11pm almost) I would take care to really pay attention to the written directions that Jonathan provides. It gets much harder to see signs and to see the river crossing when it's the middle of the night, but the directions were true and led us directly to the cabin without any second thought. We brought our own firewood but the extra wood split by the cabin was a thoughtful addition and we appreciated it being there if we had needed it. We were also appreciative of previous guests who had left spare supplies behind. You shouldn't have a shortage of necessities thanks to the community leaving their extras. All in all, it was a beautiful bit of land and we cannot wait to visit again when it gets warmer. The first night was rough with the cabin not being warm inside beforehand, and waiting on the stove to do its job, but our next day and following evening were great and a very memorable experience.

  • What a gorgeous location! We wished we could have stayed longer!

    Rebecca2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to disconnect and enjoy friends and family. Lots of nature, plants, trees, owls and coyotes calling in the distance. Had visits from possums to see what we were up to. We'll be back.

  • Love this place. Been staying here for 3 years and will continue to come back for as long as allowed. Everything you could ask for.

  • I had a wonderful time! Everything exceeded my expectations of the place. The cabin was perfect inside and out. It is situated in a peaceful setting with gorgeous views of the mountains. You can breath clean air anywhere you turn. I loved to take walks around the area! Philip, the property Manager, was very welcoming, and always responded quickly to my inquires. I felt welcomed from the beginning to the end. I will definitely be back. If you are looking to have a relaxing week in a little piece of heaven, this is the place to book! (This is a Hidden Jewel).

  • Phillip was very communicative and helpful throughout our stay. We booked the cabin for a work retreat, and it was exactly what we hoped for.

  • An absolutely amazing and beautiful place to stay. One of the most peaceful areas and a beautiful view to go along with it. Philip was wonderful in making sure we had everything we needed.

    Lauren2019-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • I was taking a class in the vicinity, and wanted a place for quiet self reflection. The cabin is a bit on the small side and somewhat remote, but very cosy and private. Waking up each day to watch the sun rise over the mountains was icing on the top.

    Nathaniel2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • Our second time here and we loved this beautiful mountain stay just as much as the first time! If you want privacy, this is the place to stay. If you want fresh mountain air, beautiful sunsets, sunrises, and peace and quiet, you have found the right place in this beautiful mountain and cabin. My only suggestion is to go slow on the gravel roads (15mph)...I was lovingly chastised for kicking up too much dust, by an elderly gentleman, and he got no argument from me, as he was 100% right. I was low on gas (should have gotten it when we were in town the night before) so was in a hurry to get to a gas station. I am glad he stopped me as I only hope to be surrounded by love on this mountain. The wildlife was wonderful to see...bucks, does, and fawn were a daily occurence. Cannot say enough about this wonderful place, and the host, Phillip, is such a kind soul, and such a joy to talk to. He is very prompt in his replies and even stops in once a week to see how you are enjoying your stay. This wonderful cabin is 5 star for it's beautiful scenery, serenity, and peace.

  • Gorgeous little cabin tucked away in the beautiful "Wild and Wonderful" mountains of West Virginia. It was the perfect spot for a 2nd honeymoon, secluded and romantic! The view is absolutely breathtaking. Location Location Location.... complete and total "Zen." We overpacked, as there are so many amenities we didn't need a fraction of the items that we brought with us. The cabin is Pristine and includes everything imaginable; it is extremely well appointed and stocked to: live, cook, relax, sleep, and bathe. Our host Philip made our experience truly memorable. He greeted us with a big smile and a bigger basket packed with an assortment of fruits, cheese and crackers, he is such a sweet and caring host! Check-in was seamless. Philip took the time to show us what we needed to know on how to operate everything. If you enjoy wildlife this is the place for you. It is located on a dead end road on top of a mountain. Deer are everywhere!! We were sitting on our covered front porch watching families (a herd) grazing, Bucks, Does and an abundant amount of fawns. We saw Fox Eagles Hawks.... so amazing. The pictures do not do this cabin justice. We could easily see several mountain ranges away and a blazing sunset every evening. One afternoon we saw a storm approaching approximately 50 miles away, what a sight to behold mother nature arriving, the view kept changing as the moments were ticking by. A tourist hint: a must see in the area is located in Romney West Virginia The Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad Train tour. Tip: Spring for the 1st class ticket you will get an incredible meal prepared by a chef comfortable seating and air conditioning as well as access to the entire train. We would like to thank our host Philip for this serene memorable week. We can't wait to come back for another week, actually we would like to experience all 4 seasons on top of that West Virginia mountain.

Gorgeous 2 story Custom Built Log Cabin in a private setting. Guests have complete privacy downstairs and private entrance and exit with 2 bedrooms, full bathroom, a breakfast bar, coffee, dvd collection and games for entertainment. About 40 mintues from historic Winchester. Come enjoy the tranquility of the country.
1500 sq ft downstairs with patio and seperate entrance. Complete privacy. Peaceful and tranquil country setting. Safe and secure.
We just recently moved here from Maine to be closer to family. We love the seclusion of the mountains, and all the amazing wildlife we see every day, yet we are still close enough to Winchester VA (about 40 mintues) for a little burst of city life.
  • Big apartment in the countryside. Nice touch is the foosball table. WiFi is slow.

  • Kim was extremely kind and helpful. The place was cozy and had a great aesthetic. Was the perfect place to unplug, relax, and regroup for the night! Thanks so much for the time Kim!

    Olga2019-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • Kim’s accommodation was cosy and welcoming. She really took care of us during our stay and her hospitality is exceptional. She served us breakfast daily and also made sure we had snacks in our place the whole time. Overall the place was really clean with a separate access and the neighborhood was homy. There are a few places to explore in and around. More importantly if you are looking for a vacation away from all the hustle and bustle this place should fit the bill perfectly!

  • This is a wonderful find and getaway from normal life. Overlooking a valley in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains and stocked with everything you need for a getaway (towels/linens/full kitchen). Philip, the property caretaker lives nearby and was very communicative/supportive of us as we stayed there. A wonderful place to reflect/getaway; I highly recommend it!

River cabin on Cacapon River on stilts only 4 steps away from the river .Fishing ,kayaking, swimming, camp fires ,grilling and relaxing from riverside deck over looking the Cacapon River. Capon Bridge W.V is a little over a mile away with restaurants , shopping, artesian market and fresh market with local wines. Plus see the occasional American bald Eagle.
The second bedroom has a twin / full bunk bed. We provide 4 kayaks, vests , and helmets and even river shoes . We have 2 fishing poles to use also. All of the above at no additional charge .
  • A very cute cabin right on the river. Darrel is about the nicest and most thoughtful host out there. Had a fire started when we arrived, responses to communication readily. A kayaker/nature lover/fisherman's paradise.

    Paul2020-03-22T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful place, Darrel is a fantastic host! Can't wait to come back!!

    Craig2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • Great space with even better hosts. Would recommend to anyone wanting some time off the beaten path.

    Laurie2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • An amazing place! Darrel was very welcoming and friendly when we arrived - he had a fire already going in the fire pit! Would highly recommend for a quiet getaway. Definitely will be coming back in the summer for a different, but I am sure just as great, experience!

    Daniel2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect place for relaxing and boating. The cabin is charming and has everything you need. And Darrel is a great host. When we arrived he had fires going both outside and in the living room stove, took time to get to know us, and explained how everything worked. we will definitely return in the summer when we can swim.

    Jane2019-11-28T00:00:00Z
  • This place was perfect. It was off the grid, but also close to a store. It was right on the water, absolutely gorgeous outdoor spaces. The inside was quaint and clean and had everything we needed. The owner was helpful and kind. Beds, Chairs, and spaces were comfortable. We would definitely return to this location and recommend it.

    Sarah2019-11-24T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great getaway for a couple or family with kids, even in the winter! The king bedroom was spacious and comfortable, the wood stove did a great job keeping us warm, and the outdoor spaces gave us a lot of options for enjoying the view of the river (and hearing the sound of the local beaver enjoying a snack). At check-in our host showed us around the property, and gave great tips for local businesses to check out. We had everything we needed to relax, be comfortable, and cook our meals. Who needs cell phone reception when you have board games and nature? A visit here in warmer weather would allow better use of the kayak, river, hammocks, cornhole, badminton court, and outdoor seating. The big movie collection and fire pit are great year-round, and Darrel provided plenty of wood for both outside and the wood stove. Overall a comfortable, quiet, relaxing weekend by the river!

    Hilary2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • Darrel is an excellent host. He was responsive, had everything stocked and ready for visitors, and offers a great value. The pictures show you exactly what his place has to offer, so no surprises. Very nice and helpful guy!

Quiet River Cabin, with large screen porch overlooking the Cacapon River. Wildlife abound including river otter, birds and charms of humming birds. Bring your Kayak. Wake up in the morning to sounds of the river, and mist rising off the water
  • Pete’s river cabin is a fantastic escape to nature with an amazingly serene view of the Great Cacapon River and a homey cabin with great options for spending time with family and friends. Pete provided us with everything we needed and exceeded our expectations. The indoor wood stove was an incredible feature, kept us very toasty, and was a very peaceful ambiance. The outside fire pit was equally as functional and Pete provided us with an abundance of wood. There is WiFi available but none of my cabin crew were able to connect, but it was refreshing to disconnect for a weekend. There is also a very cute cafe/ convenient store 3 min away that has accessible WiFi, if desperately needed. Privacy was a bit less than expected in that neighbors are relatively nearby and frequently out and about. But we always felt respected and safe.

    Ben2020-03-22T00:00:00Z
  • A relaxing spot by the river. Hope to return!

    Josh2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin was exactly what we needed! It was clean and comfortable and the view from the screened in porch was our favorite part! We couldn’t have asked for anything else and would love to stay here again!

    Rebekah2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • All I wanted was a remote place to enjoy some trees and a fire mid-winter. It was really tricky to find something that fit the bill but when I came across this place, I was immediately in. The cabin is beautifully situated, away from town but within striking distance. It’s in a flat clearing, with a few other houses which are far enough away to still give the sense of seclusion. The cabin was tidy and well maintained, all the basics you need. Plus there was a festive bouquet of fresh flowers—a lovely touch. Pete was great to work with. We were warm despite chilly temps and the location is beautiful. We meant to explore but ended up being so happy at the place we stuck close. We enjoyed sitting by the stove at night the river in the morning. Can’t wait to return during a different season.

    Marita2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at Pete's cabin. The location was beautiful and peaceful. We saw so many amazing birds from the cabin. We also loved the wood burning stove inside. It was just the cozy weekend we hoped for.

  • (note: we actually stayed at the North River Cottage, rather than cabin #4, in the same area) The cabin was great! The space was very comfortable, and in a beautiful location. It had everything we needed, and we actually never needed anything from the communal space.

  • Peace and quiet, beautiful landscapes, fun

    Mandy2019-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • Exactly as described. Great value. We really enjoy camping, but this year we had our baby and mother with us so we needed more modern necessities like electricity, a cabin, and kitchen area. We had all of that and more. The lake made for clean swimming. We used the sauna. The kitchen had more than enough equipment. Next time we will stay longer.

    Matthew2019-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • I don’t know where to start from but Vincent is one of the most amazing people ever he was very welcoming and very nice guy he made sure we are comfortable there and I am for sure coming back .

    Mansour2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Cabin 4 is essentially two normal twin size beds and two twin bunk beds, giving you six beds total, and a bathroom. There's also a kitchen table and mini fridge. We stayed with four guys for a bachelor party, and that was really all we needed. There is a very large community kitchen building with a dining room area with couch and table and another fridge as well as a large space to prepare food and cook dishes. Between four cabins, there is a fire pit and charcoal grill. Everyone cooked food in the kitchen or over a fire. Down the hill was a small pond that was very clean and pleasant, and further down was a somewhat larger pond with canoes and a dock in the middle. We fished catch and release, the highlight for the groom was likely catching a catfish. It can be a bit hard to gauge from photos and the abundant description what it will be like, but it's beautiful and peaceful. The camp is about 20 minutes from the nearest restaurants and shopping, which is also about where the nearest cell signal is. Let people you care about know you are almost there when you get to that bit of civilization, as there isn't any beyond it. That is likely what you came for.

    Charles2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay! The camp site is well kept. We found our cabin to be clean and highly functional. We enjoyed making use of the canoe, sauna, and cornhole. We roasted s’mores and cooked on the grill. Everyone was very friendly. We are city girls and so this was a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of DC. The campsite is quite peaceful. Just got back and have already recommended to other friends!

  • Beautiful cabin tucked away in the woods. Check in was pretty easy and we found the place easily. It's wheelchair accessible and pretty spacious for 5-6 people. The kitchen was well stocked and we found everything we needed to cook our dinner and breakfast( you will have to carry your ingredients though). The host was very responsive and accomodated our requests. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for a quiet get away from the city.

  • Wow what can I see Angie’s cabin in the hills of West Virginia is a perfect escape. The views are amazing, the beds are comfortable, and the property sits on five beautifully wooded acres. There is a fire pit outside and a wood stove on the inside. I cannot recommend this cabin enough. In addition to the great views and accommodations, Angie was amazing to work with. She always quickly responded to my questions within minutes. She had great recommendations on where to pick up groceries, eat out, and partake in local activities. Venturing out to the cabin at night can be a bit daunting, as you are in the middle of the hills, but Angie gave perfect directions and helped us every step of the way. Highly recommend you experience the tranquility and nature of this cabin!

    Aaron2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Angie was an amazing host. She had always quickly responded all my question and made herself available at any time. I also asked for a late checkout and she promptly made it possible. The cabin is cozy and has everything you would need. As other people said, the pictures doesn’t show for real how beautiful the view is. Peaceful place with easy access. I’ll definitely come again!!

  • We just had our third visit to Angie's cabin since last summer so we've got to experience 3 seasons there! It's top of our mind whenever we decide we need to get away for a quiet, secluded, relaxing weekend. We love the location in the woods, the cabin is always clean and we keep the fire roaring the whole time! We absolutely love the coziness of it. And there's a huge pile of chopped wood to keep feeding the fire. Check-in is extremely simple, Angie is a great communicator and very friendly. We'll definitely be back again!

    Allison2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • I highly recommend Angie's cabin. Very clean, private place, hosts are super nice, they were very flexible with our delayed check out request. Try Capon Bridge cabin out!

  • What a great camp site! On a whim we decided to go camping with a bunch of friends and I just found this wonderful gem of a space! About 15 of us ended up going and we had a wonderful time! Slightly rustic, but with easily accessible amenities... we got to try out some of our new camping equipment without worry of fail! The beautiful property has a winding creek and is just really charming an magical. Sleeping with the sound of the creek right next to you was a wonderful experience! The small lake is safe, easy to swim, and fun to boat around. We all very much enjoyed the wood fires sauna as well. We were just a bunch of single adults but we could see how this would be a wonderful place to bring kids as well! We will DEFINITELY be returning!!

    Benjamin2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • We rented out the large private island campsite on Sept 21-22, 2019. We had a large group of teenagers celebrating a birthday. We absolutely loved every aspect of the campground! The lake was gorgeous and had kayaks and boats for your use. The sand volleyball court next to the lake was so much fun! We had plenty of wood at the site ready for s’mores along a beautiful creek making this campsite memorable. Everything about this place was wonderful, it has everything you need and made for a great, fun weekend for everyone. We’ll definitely be back!!

  • Karen’s place was super clean and we had a very relaxing stay! The view off the back porch is beautiful!

    Elizabeth2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • This cozy cabin was a perfect respite. Clean and comfy. Due to potentially scary driving weather, Karen let us check in an hour early which was greatly appreciated and when we got in there was extra/leftover wood for stove! We came as two couples with with dogs to stay in, play games and cook. Kitchen was stocked well, only didn’t find a peeler. Keep in mind there’s only one full sized bed, but found an extra full sized mattress under that bed, which we used in the main room! Great neighborhood, secluded, so quite and peaceful. The river was gorgeous- even in the frozen rain!

    Marietta2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • A perfect spot for for a peaceful, quiet getaway. The cottage is clean and comfortable.

    Melissa2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • This place is exactly as advertised. Located on beautiful land on the river, it was beautiful going outside and watching the stars. There's a great collection of DVDs and the fireplace was lovely to read by. Definitely recommend this place.

  • Love the River Haven cabin. Karen is very responsive and the cabin is the perfect fit for our family. We enjoyed using the kayaks this time around. Very peaceful in the Cacapon valley. The river access in front of the house can sometimes be hit or miss for an easy canoe launch so be advised to bring footwear you can get wet. Will definitely be back!

    Ernie2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time! The location is amazing. Tucked away in the mountains the cabin is located right by the river. We enjoyed sitting on the screened in porch overlooking the backyard. Everything you need is provided for a fun and relaxing get-a-way

    Ben2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely place for a low key weekend getaway!

    Emily2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • My family (including a 1-year-old) enjoyed Karen’s place and hope to make it back again! Our overall stay was wonderful and the area is gorgeous and relaxing. The screened in porch, with hammock, was perfect for all and we loved being able to paddle out on the river in the kayaks provided. This stretch of river is calm and pretty shallow so it was also good for swimming and wading with the baby. We are a big home cooking family and did wish we had brought some better prep knives with us, but otherwise found the kitchen to have all the basic tools and pans we needed. Also, there is a nice collection of CDs and DVDs to peruse.

  • This place is just perfect. The house is adorable and has everything you'll need. The views are just stunning. Perfect location on top the mountain and just a short drive to town. • Michael’s place is wonderful and he is very responsive. The views are so expansive they are difficult to capture. Set your alarm so you don’t miss sunrise and settle in for the show. Sunsets are also great. The cabin is well equipped, cozy, and clean. The drive up/down the mountain is a fun one. I’d never been to Winchester before; it is a hidden gem. Highly recommend Bonnie Blue for any meal/coffee/snack. Lots of historical sites worth checking out. Thank you, Michael! Looking forward to my next stay.

  • Our stay at Michael's cabin was fantastic. The location was perfect for those who want to be secluded but also be close enough to have a quick drive to the bars, restaurants, and nightlife of Winchester. We had a small issue unlocking the front door (through our own making) but Micheal was very quick to answer all of our questions and help us. When we visit Winchester again we will definitely be booking this cabin through Michael.

  • Our family loves and adores this place! If we aren't swimming in gorgeous spring feed lake or jumping off the dock, there's plenty of games/ books we borrow at the dining hall, trails to hike, berries to pick, and air hockey to play. Not to mention they added a delicious cafe on site in the dining hall. You really don't need to leave but if you must there are two great towns to explore nearby! They usually have someone playing music and set off amazing fireworks for the fourth of July! Two of the owners also offer massage (additional cost of course but sooo worth it) which I tried this visit by Barb and it was one of the best deep tissues I've ever had! Can't wait to come back!

    Madawn2019-07-07T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin is an excellent base from which to experience all that the Buffalo Gap Camp has to offer! Our family had stayed at one of the tent camping sites previously, and loved returning to play with the addition of a little extra comfort! The cabin had everything we needed to enjoy our stay and location within the camp was perfect - central to the beach, the mess hall, and the pavilion, with a great fire circle out front. Vincent, Barbara, and camp staff were all very responsive, and gave us quick answers, including about where we might find a good place in town to watch the World Cup match we didn’t want to miss! Our family is already eager for a return trip - thanks!

    Jessica2019-07-03T00:00:00Z
  • Our week stay at the Watercress Cabin at Buffalo Gap was wonderful and relaxing. The cabin had everything we need to prepare our meals. My 8 year old niece got to try her hand at kayaking in the pond. We had a campfire every evening and enjoyed exploring the grounds. Vince, Barbara and the onsite crew were friendly and helpful. Vince even helped us find a docent for the Ice Mountain hike. Buffalo Gap has lots to do onsite but also has easy access to the museums of Winchester and Cedar Creek Battlefield.

  • This location is beautiful! I went there with my friend and her two kids (10 and 13) and everyone had a blast. We hiked up the wild berry trail that starts right near the cabins. The firepits were plentiful and easy to use. The lake was small enough to have a friendly communal atmosphere but large enough that it accommodated everyone. Heads up, though. This is a -cabin-. So bring your flannel jammies and, if you have a sensitive back, some extra pillows.

  • We have stayed at Buffalo Gap many times. We are always excited to see what new things they are doing. It is a great atmosphere that will help you relax. The scenery is gorgeous and there are lots of things to do there. Fish, swim go in the sauna, play corn hole or ladder ball, shoot some pool, walk the nature trails, or just relax on the beach, your choice. The great thing about all of this is that all the activities don't cost you anything extra. I highly recommend experiencing it for yourself. If you have been before go back and see all the changes they have made. the owners are great people who really want you to have a great time there. I will be back there again, more than likely this year if I can fit it in.

  • This was my first time in Capon Bridge. Aside from no cell service with AT&T, it was an amazing stay. We had a blast and love that it’s dog friendly.

    Heather2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • This is our second trip to Buffalo Gap Retreat. The cabin was wonderful and spacious. I had amended my reservation to include my brother and his family a day before our visit with ease. There were eight of us in the cabin, 4 adults and 4 teens. We had enough space to move around and having 2 bathrooms was fantastic. The kitchen had all the needed utensils and appliances. We had a fantastic time sitting around the campfire. Our favorite part was the free wood for the fires. We also loved swimming and the use of kayaks on the water. The kids loved the various games in the gameroom. All in all I would give our stay a 10 and will return again.

  • Buffalo Gap Cottages is a great getaway for anyone who wants to relax and have a peaceful vacation. Great place for the kids to swim and fish at the lake that was on the property. Vince was a great host and was always available to answer any question or concerns that we might have. Would recommend Buffalo Gap to anyone who wants a great getaway.

  • Great to see such a labor of love in the refurbishing of Buffalo Gap Retreat--a place where we used to dance at Almost Heaven and Savoy Swings dance camps. The pavilion is as sweet a place to dance as always. Remodeled and updated cabins, café make the stay very nice.

  • Truly an amazing location. The house is very private, only heard neighbors one night far away, but during the day we could have spent the whole day by the beautiful little river without seeing anyone. Not a house or person or anything to be seen down by the water. The river is clean (of course they're are little creatures and algae but that means the water isn't polluted), and it as warm and refreshing to swim in. We got in tubes and went down the river until we hit the road on the other side of the neck and walked back up route 9 and it only was a 15 minute walk! House was spacious and clean. Absolute darkness at night meant we could see so many shooting stars in the night sky, and at dusk we watched as ducks flew past. Seemed like there were lots of fish too but we didn't have time to fish. Would be nice to at least have salt, pepper and sugar at the place, or soap, but other than that, could not recommend this place highly enough for nature lovers who want peace and privacy!

    Kyle2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • It was better than the pictures. Definitely bring water shoes! I love that they let you use their tubes and raft. Quiet, beautiful and clean. We all can't wait to go back.

    Angelina2019-06-23T00:00:00Z
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend. The house was one of the cleanest that we had ever experienced and we appreciated that so much. The peacefulness and fun little hike down to the river along with the ping pong and air hockey tables provided good entertainment. Beds were comfortable and having linens and towels provided make it so much easier. The starter pack of necessities are a great added touch. Grill is propane so no need for charcoal. Dish network is on the basement TV. There is an outdoor fire ring available as well. Owner accommodated us on short notice for which we were grateful. We would definitely return!

  • It is a nice place to do things outside like hiking, corn hole, basketball court, swimming in the lake. I would suggest to get there a bit early in the day so you can explore so see where things are so you know where things are. The shower in the cabin is cold water only there is hot water one but it's located in a different spot. Also there are no air-conditioning in the cabins so the get hot in the day. They are adding some in other not in the one we stayed. This would be a great place to stay in the Fall or Spring. It does have grilling area and fire pit for you that are nice bring you grilling tools and lighter fluid. In the summer it's nicer to cook outside to keep the heat down in the cabin.

The large log beams of the chalet's architectural construction, echo the wild and wonderful expanses of the surrounding nature. In addition to the soaring ceilings of the great room, the huge porches invite you to sit and listen to the river babbling below. Enjoy your favorite drink, as you and family/friends sit by a fire in one of the two (indoor and semi-outdoor) massive stone fireplaces. Dine around the 6 person solid wood Amish table, or the large butcher block bar seating, or at the outdoor patio seating. Or curl up with a good book in the king-sized master bed or one of the cozy nooks in this 3,000+ square foot home. The kitchen is full size with dishwasher, stove, microwave, refrigerator, granite counters, and everything your inner chef desires. Also on this main floor, you’ll find a half bath, laundry area, and master suite. The master suite boasts a king-size bed, and an adjoining bathroom. Journey to the second floor to discover two bedrooms and another full bath. One room has a queen-sized bed. The other a bunk bed containing two twin beds as well as an office desk for those looking to still write or connect to the outside world. The massive lower floor has plenty of space and some toys for little ones to play around. Here you’ll find a sofa by the Netflix television, convertible to full-size sleeper and some exercise equipment. There’s also a full-sized bathroom Don't forget to stargaze from the back porch. There is plenty of room to roam on the property but no trespassing on the property of other neighbors.
Conveniently located 2 hours from Washington DC and 3 hours from Pittsburgh, the Ice Mountain development has both weekenders and full-time residents. Please be respectful to other neighbors and to the surrounding nature and protected ecosystem. While hunting is not permitted within Ice Mountain, nearby there is a fish and game area, a public river/boat launch, and state parks (e.g. Cacapon Resort State Park, see photo). The hikes at Ice Mountain, particularly the view from Ravens Ridge (see listed in photos), about 2-mile round trip from trailhead, is wonderful. For those not familiar with Ice Mountain it contains natural formations of ice at dozens of small ice caves venting freezer temperature air -- coming out of an underground cave system year round that is believed to contain a glacier left over from an ice age more than 12,000 to 20,000 years ago. For train enthusiasts, the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad in Romney conducts picturesque seasonal train rides. (see photo)

  • This was a really fun camping weekend for our family. The shared amenities are really fun -- we loved taking the kayaks and canoes out on the lake, using the lakeside sauna, and playing ping pong, darts, and foosball. It was really convenient to have wood provided for a campfire. It got freezing cold at night, so make sure to bring plenty of blankets and warm clothing in winter as the cabin is not heated. We would love to return!

PET POLICY: MOUNTAINAIRE is well behaved dog friendly. All dogs must be kept off the furniture at all times, must be crated when left alone in the house, and must be leashed when outside. If you would like to bring Fluffy, please ask at the time of booking. There is a pet fee of $65 per pet per stay, and because AIRbnb does not support a pet fee in their booking process, it must be paid directly to us before you arrive.
While Mountainaire is designed to whisk you away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it is not without varied and marvelous excursions and activities. Wether you want to soak up the natural beauty all around, explore history, art and architecture, get your thrill on, or take in the simple pleasures of charming historic towns, you are uniquely positioned to do so. Just beyond your doorstep the natural beauty abounds with experiences. Spend the afternoon tubing on the river, which is best done in late Spring early summer when the water is high, or try your luck at fishing. The fishing season runs year-round. Trout can be caught on nice, warm winter days. Springtime is the best time for fly fishing the North River because of the aquatic insect hatches and good water levels. Summertime is okay in the headwaters but the water can get low during the late summer. Fall is also a great time for fly fishing the North River. Hike the beautiful Ice Mountain. The mountain contains a set of stone chimneys called “Raven Rocks” and a large talis. At the base of the talis is an area where small caves hold ice most of the year. One of the popular ways to celebrate the Fourth of July in old days was to bring an ice cream freezer and fixing and dig ice from the mountain to make ice cream for a picnic. To this day there are flowers growing at the base of the talis that are found only in areas in New York state and northward. The mountain is a unique ecosystem for a middle Atlantic state. The rock chimneys are named after the large ravens that make their home in the area. Today one may also see eagles in the area. Private tours are available. History buffs will love a trip to Fort Edwards, once manned by Col. George Washington. Like other fort sites used by the Colony of Virginia during the same period, the Edwards site has remained virtually undisturbed for nearly 250 years. It offers a rare look at a fort site of this period and may also provide a window into the life of a frontier settler. For more information visit Daytrips will afford you a plethora of experiences. Explore the historic town of Bath, also known as Berkely Springs, just a 45 minute drive away. Art, restaurants and spas abound! You can even view George Washington’s bathtub. Cacapon (pronounced ka-KAY-pon) Resort State Park, located on the outskirts of Berkeley Springs, is so named because it sits within the shadows of a wide expanse of Cacapon Mountain, the highest peak in the eastern portion of the state at 2,300 feet. The mountain divides the landscape, with the park on the eastern slope and the Cacapon River winding along the base of the western slope. There are so many wonderful things to do in this spectacular mountain park, which is open to the public, including golf, horseback riding, hiking, and lake activities. For more information Another beautiful town to visit is Winchester, VA. Discover charming shops delicious restaurants, centuries old architecture, numerous historical landmarks and museums waiting to be explored. Old Town Winchester offers convenience, charm and a warm welcome to all. Just 90 minutes away, Deep Creek Lake offers activities for the whole family. This spot in Western Maryland is a true all seasons destination. Snowboard, ski and even ice-fish or dogsled all winter, then come back for white water rapids, bass fishings, jet skiing and more in the summer. Luray Caverns, about 1 hour 35 minutes drive from Mountainaire, is the most popular caverns in Eastern America. Guided tours along well-lighted, paved walkways lead visitors through cathedral-sized rooms with ceilings 10-stories high, towering stone formations, and natural wonders at every turn. Enormous chambers are filled with towering stone columns, shimmering draperies and crystal-clear pools. The National Park Service and the Department of Interior designated Luray Caverns a Registered Natural Landmark. Only 2 hours away, you can tour Frank Lloyd Wright's, Falling Water. Fallingwater is a house built between '36 and '39 over a waterfall in southwest Pennsylvania. Frank Lloyd Wright, America’s most famous architect, designed the house for his clients, the Kaufmann family. It instantly became famous, and today it is a National Historic Landmark. It’s a house that doesn’t even appear to stand on solid ground, but instead stretches out over a 30’ waterfall. Advanced tickets are recommended as this is a highly popular destination.

  • The Mountainaire cabin exceeded our expectations. The cabin was beautiful designed with thoughtful details throughout- from heated floors, beautiful rustic fixtures, a fully stocked kitchen and an abundance of spaces to congregate- our only disappointment was not being here when it was warmer when we could truly enjoy every spot this wonderful cabin had to offer. We spent the weekend by the fireplace, watching movies on the large projector tv, cooking delicious meals in the kitchen and exploring the grounds. There was a wonderful hike right off the property, a fun river and suspension bridge, a nice hot tub and plenty of space for our group of 10. This cabin was more luxurious than most- with a lot of really wonderful touches that made staying here quite comfortable- which we thought made this spot truly unique. The outdoor spaces looked equally as nice and we look forward to returning again to experience this awesome cabin in the fall or spring when you can really enjoy the entire property. The hosts were extremely easy to get in touch with- and thought of everything- making our stay that much easier.

  • Mountainaire truly is a luxury cabin experience. Beyond being beautiful, tranquil, and entertaining, there were a myriad of thoughtful touches that made the trip unique to any other Airbnb experience I've had.

    Alice2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • This was a perfect cabin for our annual girlfriends getaway. The cabins touches are beautiful, personal, and thoughtful. We all slept comfortably and enjoyed every inch of this cabin.

  • This luxury cabin is unparalleled. If you're looking for an amazingly furnished property with all sorts of special touches and great privacy than this is the place for you. We were particularly impressed with how well stocked the kitchen is and easy to use all the amazing amenities are. Stephen and Mary are clearly experts in the hospitality business! This place is amazing!

    Stephanie2020-01-06T00:00:00Z
  • We have stayed at a quite a few cabins in our travels and this is by far our favorite. The space is beautiful, the area is perfect, and we loved the game room and outdoors! We may need to get there in the summer time and we hardly ever revisit the same places, but this home is worth a second visit. It was the kitchen stocked with every tool we needed for us to make our Thanksgiving family dinner. We enjoyed the long weekend and highly recommend this lovely cabin! Thank you for sharing your place with us!

    Amy2019-11-25T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin is beautiful. Inside and out, this place will blow you away. The layout and design is as comfortable as much as it is aesthetically pleasing. The pictures of this cabin are awesome but they do not do it justice. Stephen and Mary were great hosts also. They provided us with everything we needed. Gave us a check in list before we got there and sent a reminder email for checking out before we left. I would give this place more than five stars if I could.

    Steven2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • We had a party of 12 people and everyone had a blast. It rained our entire first day, but the enclosed wrap around porch made it so we weren't stuck inside all day. The pool was one of our favorite parts, along with the sound system that is consistent throughout the entire house. There's no service for phones, but the wifi was strong enough for our entire party. There also was a great 2.8 mile hike right behind the house that led to some amazing views. Definitely want to come back!

You'll feel as though you've entered a whole different world upon your arrival at the property, which is located just 2 hours and 15 minutes from the capital beltway. Your favorite relaxing spot will quickly become the 12-by-45-foot deck, boasting fantastic views of the treetops, mountains, and sunset, plus glimpses of the lake once the leaves fall. Sit back in one of the deck's reclining chairs and enjoy the sunshine during the day and the twinkling stars in the night sky. A brand new private hot tub on the deck completes the picture, where you can soak your cares away and admire the spectacular wooded scenery. Numerous jets propel the soothing waters, as bright multicolored lights, 2 waterfalls, and a volcano jet add to the excitement. The deck also has a gas grill for barbequing burgers, fish or veggies. Attached to the deck is a screened-in porch with a patio couch and comfortable chairs. The screened porch is perfect for reading, relaxing, talking, and enjoying the fall foliage. All the amenities you want in your ultimate home-away-from-home are here, including central air conditioning and heat, high-speed wireless internet access, and a lovely stone propane fireplace. After preparing a tasty meal in the fully equipped kitchen, gather with your loved ones in the massive dining room, surrounded by windows on 3 sides with glorious wooded views. The oak table is perfect for playing games with your family members! Take your pick from the many board games provided in the dining room cabinet, including Scrabble, Scattergories, Life, Jenga, Settlers of Catan, Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, as well as playing cards, and dice. The welcoming master bedroom offers a queen bed with cedar cabinets and a private door leading out to the hot tub. The second bedroom is a snug bunk room with a bunk bed for 2, complete with storage drawers under the bunk. Additional sleeping arrangements can be found in the 2 carpeted loft spaces. These are true lofts, and though kids can stand up in them, most adults cannot, yet they are very comfortable to sleep and sit in. Loft 1 is well suited for adults or children, featuring a queen futon on the floor, 2 toddler beds, and a safety gate at the top of the stairs with sturdy rails for peace of mind. Loft 2 is a 12-by-12-foot loft over the dining area, offering 2 twin beds. Accessible via a sturdy pull-down ladder, the second loft is especially fun for teenagers but not suitable for small children, as the opening for the ladder does not close.
'Cabin in the Woods' sits on 6 acres of forest in an unspoiled environment, making it an ideal accommodation choice for nature enthusiasts. Climb up the mountain through the Hardwood Forest of tower oaks, black walnuts, red and white maples, wildflowers and ferns. There are nesting pairs of bald eagles nearby, and in the spring and summer, they will sometimes soar for 20 minutes right over the property. If you're looking for more nearby adventure, take a 1-mile walk (or a very short drive) down to Lake Ferndale! The lake is stocked with fish, including smallmouth bass, and is a great place to do a little fishing. It's also the perfect spot to bring your kayak or canoe for some easy paddling. There's a place to launch your boat, and since only electric motors are allowed, everything stays quiet and still! Those seeking more adventurous waters should head 2 miles over to the South Branch of the Potomac River, a popular destination for boating, fishing or tubing. In addition to the Potomac River, 'Cabin in the Woods' is close to numerous State and National Parks, the historic Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad, and many important historical sites. Hampshire County is the oldest county in West Virginia and the oldest incorporated town, Romney, is the county seat. Originally part of Lord Fairfax's Northern Neck Proprietary, the land here was first settled around 1750. Hampshire County and its surrounding area have a vast, rich heritage steeped in Colonial, Revolutionary, and Civil War history. Stop by the Civil War Museum in nearby Romney to view its fascinating collection of historic artifacts and weapons! No matter what season you plan to visit West Virginia, you certainly won't have a shortage of exciting things to see and do. Whether you choose to spend the majority of your time on the beach, swimming in the lake, fishing, reading a book in the screened porch, or just relaxing on the deck while observing the night stars, this delightful Lake Ferndale vacation rental cabin is ideal for your next family retreat.

    Tim2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • For WV Cabin in the Woods. Such a great experience at this cabin. Nestled away for privacy, but still easy to reach, we got stuck in traffic but still easily found it in the dark. Larry and Alicia couldn't be nicer, and are happy to give you the flavor of the local area. The hot tub was fantastic, the stargazing incredible- Milky Way, satellites etc- and we especially liked discovering Cumberland, a 40 minute drive with the Great Allegheny Passage, boating at the casino by the state park, etc. Fabulous time!!

  • It is a great secluded place. We had a lot of fun on the property. Beach was awesome. This primitive cabin is amazing for people trying to get away from the city.

    Indu2018-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time at Buffalo Gap. We spent a week there and made some great memories. We made 3 day trips out to surrounding areas , Washington D.C. , Hershey, Pa. and Berkeley Springs, W. Va. All were great places to visit but everyone’s favorite day was the day we spent not leaving Buffalo Gap. We swam in the lake most of the day, watched a movie in the beach house and then came back to the cabin and built a fire outside in the fire pit, grilled hamburgers on the grill and made s’mores for dessert. That was a real vacation day and was everyone’s favorite. The little town of Capon Bridge has a couple of $ stores and a convenience store where you can get everything you need for your stay at Buffalo Gap. We definitely want to come back and stay again next time we come to West Viriginia.

  • We stayed at this home for a weekend get away. It was exactly what we were looking for. Remote location, very peaceful and quiet, gorgeous scenery, and some wildlife. The mornings here are amazing and sipping coffee on the back deck is a must. We had a fire both nights and really enjoyed ourselves. The place was clean. There were several kitchen utensils to do your own cooking. And the check in/out process was simple. Thanks for a great stay!

    Leah2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Great for families

    Chelsea2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • Quaint, quiet and peaceful! Just what the doctor ordered! We will definitely be back for another trip, loved being right on the river and loved the fire pit. Great place for a little in the woods R & R!

    Justina2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great location on the river away from the population. It is secluded with a well maintained yard. Grass was cut and plenty of play area. River was only steps away and we spent each evening/night at the fire ring.

    Brian2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • Stayed for two nights over Labor Day weekend. The cabin was wonderful and just as advertised. Very private, felt very safe. Everything was well labeled and easy to use. If you're concerned about the wide slats on the upper floor, they now have rigid plastic that can be unrolled and secured to cover the gaps (really smart fix!), and a baby gate that can be placed at the top of the stairs. Sheets, towels, and soap were provided. Berkeley Springs Cottage Rentals was completely on top of things - very clear arrival instructions and very responsive. Unfortunately the river level was low so we weren't able to fish, which was a primary reason we chose this location. If you're interested in fishing, kayaking, or floating, I'd recommend checking the water levels of the Cacapon first. There are several public access streams within a short drive which we were able to use instead. While we weren't able to fish, we enjoyed dining and playing card games out on the large deck, and had a nice fire in the fire pit in the evening. We would definitely return to this location.

  • The scheduling, information and coordination was helpful and clear. The House is a dream location with all the amenities needed for GREAT private fantastic vacation. Large home with year-round access. Must visit location!

    Rick2017-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • This river cabin has a wonderful location next to the Cacapon River with private access on a well manicured, spacious property. The river is slow and shallow, great for easy tubing and wading with your little ones. The house is bright and the kitchen has everything you need for cooking. Great deck comfort and views with plenty of chairs. Lots of privacy. Pictures are accurate. Watch the road in, it is gravel and has some steepness. Note that AC doesn't make its way quite as well into the main level bedroom and the upstairs bedroom, which wasn't a big problem with highs in the low 80s and overnight lows in the 60s. The second floors indoor balcony and staircase has slats that were a bit too large to feel safe for toddlers, so we kept our daughter downstairs.

  • The "Nook" is a great weekend getaway. The site is just separated and wooded enough to make you feel like you're in a private location and the amenities make it a very accommodating. Overall a great place to camp.

    Ben2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • My family and two other families really enjoyed Buffalo gap. The wood fired sauna on the lake was a bit hit, and the kids enjoyed the freedom of going to the game room, the lake, the pavilion. I got a fabulous massage from Barbara (highly recommend!). Another wonderful experience was the hike up nearby Ice Mountain, which needs to be coordinated with a docent -- Buffalo Gap's information describes how to do this. It was a wonderful and relaxing long weekend for us all.

    Alwynne2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Repeat visitor and will continue to go back.

    Todd2019-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • This is really such an amazing find! The town is just adorable, and the access to all the camp has to offer (lake, sauna, dining hall) was great. I *highly* recommend arriving during the day as opposed to night due to the secluded nature of the site, and also the lack of cell service in this area. Other than that, the site was perfect and I'd highly recommend it.

    Mackenzie2019-06-30T00:00:00Z
  • Nice place for peaceful life... 👍😘👓

    Thrilok2018-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • We liked the place. The owner was very thoughtful of us: we arrived under the lengthy rain and the Vincent suggested alternative spots for putting tents. We chose the spot that we booked though. The campsite seems really private and is hidden behind the trees. I would assume trees keep this place in a couple shadow in hot sunny conditions. But had no chance to experience this due to the rainy and cloudy days.

    Leonid2018-06-24T00:00:00Z
  • wonderful place to have fun with kids! The peace of not having to worry about them crossing roads or getting lost while they have independent, free range fun in the outdoors is invaluable. the cabins mixed with campsites is a great way to combine different groups of friends with different needs. the fun abounds - lovely communal sharing of boats, games, books, sports, fire pits, hiking trails, and suana. the nature is beautiful - rolling hillsides, cool breezes from the surrounding forests, the babbling brook, and fish in the lake were highlights.

    Joy2018-05-28T00:00:00Z
  • Everything about buffalo gap retreat was great! Lots of activities, clean bathrooms and showers, great views, and awesome hospitable hosts! We went camping on a very rainy weekend and Vincent was generous enough to offer refuge from the weather by letting us set up camp under their huge pavilion. We will definitely be camping here again. Oh ya, and the wood-fire sauna was a wonderfully relaxing touch!!

  • The place was nice. I wasn't expecting the steep slope to the cabin, but it was not problem. The kitchen cabin was great. Everyone had fun in the lake with the kayaks, canoes, floaties, and playing volleyball. It was nice to be somewhere where we did not have to leave the site for anything. Everyone who went with me thought it was really fun and they all want to go back!

  • Rustic cabin stay, reminded me of a summer camp...which it was back in the 60's I think! The spring fed lake was clean, had kayaks, volleyball, etc. There's a large pavilion with other games to play. Fire pit & grills ready to use. Plenty of seating. Fantastic place in the mountains to really get away from everything. Note that quite a bit of hills with no ramps, no reception or wifi, so it's a nice way to force everyone off their devices. The view of the mountains was spectacular!

  • Conveniently located just a couple hours from DC, Megan’s place is great for those trying to have a lazy getaway in the woods. Bring your swim trunks and inner tubes if you have them - a lazy float down the river is just a few minutes away! The screen porch is especially nice - you can sit out all day and read or play board games to your heart’s content.
