Mtunzini is a small coastal town that is situated almost exactly halfway along KwaZulu-Natal's coastline in South Africa approximately 140 km north of Durban. The name is an isiZulu word meaning place in the shade. Not only is Mtunzini a fisherman's paradise but also a bird watchers haven and is renowned as one of the few places where one of South Africa's rarest birds of prey, the palm-nut vulture, is found. Mtunzini boasts, among other attractions, pristine beaches, a 9-hole golf course at the Mtunzini Country Club, three lovely restaurants, beautiful trails through pristine coastal dune forest.
  • Fabulous accommodation in a truly beautiful location - both cheryl and roger's property itself and Mtunzini. We only stayed one night but wished it could have been so much longer to allow some proper exploring of the immediate area. Luxurious feeling accommodation with jaw dropping views from bedroom and decking. Perfect little kitchenette to cook up a storm, decadent double shower, and snuggly lounge area. Hosts were incredibly welcoming encouraging our use of their pool, a perfect spot for sundowners.

Hornbill Haven is within walking distance to shops and restaurants and in fairly close proximity to the beach. You’ll love our place because of the people, the outdoors space, bird life and nature reserve. The garden is constantly abuzz with many birds visiting daily with some making it their permanent home. Our studio unit is good for couples, solo adventurers, and business travellers. There is a country club in the village for sports enthusiasts and the local restaurants are very good.
    Bird watchers paradise
We basically live in a nature reserve.
  • John and Sue are warm, friendly and very welcoming! The flat's kitchen is small but adequate, and overall the accommodation is comfortable. The little touches of providing milk, tea, coffee, sugar and cookies is great. I can highly recommend a stay here for a single or couple looking for a more personal 'home' stay!

Clean and neat with all the amenities you need for a weekend away. Didn't get to see the Hornbills but the butterflies in the garden path leading to the unit were a treat!

Situated in the eco-village of Mtunzini on the Zululand Coast, Mtunzini B&B is a nature lover’s paradise.
Its artfully laid out indigenous garden attracts a variety of special bird species such as White- eared Barbets; Trumpeter Hornbills; Twinspots; Tinkerbirds and has even enjoyed the occasional visit from the Palmnut Vultures that roost in the Raphia palms no more than 200m from its front door. Whilst sitting on the deck overlooking the garden breath taking sunsets can be viewed over the rolling hills of Zululand. Mtunzini B&B is within easy walking distance of pubs and restaurants. MTB and hiking trails begin almost on our doorstep and a host of different sporting facilities such as a scenic golf course overlooking the ocean; a manicured bowling green; squash courts and tennis courts all lie within a two kilometre radius of Mtunzini B&B. Also within this radius lies the Umlalazi Nature Reserve with its wide, navigable river; mangrove swamps; coastal dune forests and wetlands. Its expansive; undeveloped sandy shore stretches for kilometres in both northerly and southerly directions. Red Duiker and zebras are commonly seen in this reserve and it boasts a large variety of birdlife. Surf- ski paddling; canoeing and boating are popular on the Umlalazi River. Fishing is popular along the river banks and the sea shore. The reserve gates only close at 10 pm allowing one to indulge in some spectacular star gazing whilst enjoying sundowners and evening braais at the picnic sites along the Umlalazi River.

I began a long trip to South Africa from Europe with a few days here to recharge my batteries and it was the ideal place to do this. The room is very comfortable and the garden and vista of the local scenery is enchanting.

  • Alison and Andre are perfect hosts. They were warm and welcoming, and really made us feel at home. We'd been in the bush prior to arriving, and our car was covered in dust & mud. While we were out exploring the wonderful Ngoye Forest together with a friend the day after our arrival, Andre hosed down our car for us. How's that for going the extra mile?! The accommodation is spotless and spacious, decorated in soft blues which is restful and cool. The linen was light and fluffy, with really comfy pillows, which is always a great plus! A single sprig of lavender on the bed together with the soap and towels was a lovely gesture, which exemplified Alison's gentle personal touch. The kitchen is is equipped with everything one would need, and there are several places for dining, including a lovely airy veranda overlooking some of the great indigenous trees that attract the plethora of birds native to the area.

Doreen was an incredible host, who even when the town had a power outage, brought us a kettle of boiling water for tea in the morning. The house is well-stocked, very clean and has a lovely energy owing to the light from all the large windows. Taryn was accommodating to our check-in times and very informative with regards to things to do in the town.

  • We had a lovely stay. The highlight being the gorgeous pool and living area. Welma was a lovely host and even had a polyotter ready for our son for the pool! It was unfortunate that a few fans and such broke just before our arrival but it couldn't be helped and Welma saw to it that we had replacements of everything to make us comfortable before these things were fixed. My kiddies were 6m and 2 years and they absolutely loved the place, my son calling it 'home' and my daughter performed her first proper crawl under their gorgeous verandah-cum-lapha next to the pool. It was a home from home and we wished we had booked more nights to just chill in the evenings listening to the hornbills and watching the swallows and bat's swooping above our heads. Even my husband managed to feel relaxed after the first afternoon and hes a farmer so he never relaxes on holiday!

Also day drive's to other places of interest include Eshowe's museum village which highlights the history of the region as well as the cultural and craft art of the Zulu people, the aerial boardwalk through the canopy of Dlinza Forest as well as the popular Shakaland which offers Zulu cultural tours, traditional meals and a high energy performance of Zulu dancing. There are several events on the annual calendar such as the Royal Reed Dance and the Shembe Church gatherings which occur in the region and make a unique day tour.
  • Toad tree cottage is amazing property loving created. It is on a working sugar cane farm but tucked in a peaceful oasis full of indigenous plants. Truly magical and Bruce was a great host who made us very welcome. I would definitely recommend a stay here for a truly unique experience. Thank you Bruce.

  • What a beautiful, hidden gem. Tucked away in a gorgeous natural environment.

  • The cottage is great with lovely character. We loved the murals, the ball&claw bath and the sound of the birds. A perfect escape. Your 2 hairy friends were so sweet visiting us. The pool was most welcome with the Zini heat.

  • A little gem, a tropical oasis hidden away on a sugarcane plantation. This is a perfect peaceful place to stay with easy access to all facilities needed locally. Bruce is an excellent host, able to offer ideas / suggestions. Toad Tree cottage makes a fantastic base to explore other areas allowing you to make the most of your stay. We thoroughly enjoyed a days safari, seeing amazing animals in their natural habit was truly special. The cottage offers great space inside, it is clean and tidy and its character is wonderful. Then the pool and surrounding area gives you the opportunity to relax and enjoy meals outside in a beautiful setting. We loved our stay and would certainly like to return to do some more exploring in the future. Kim and Andrew

  • A fantastic experience in every way. Bruce is an excellent host and there are very few places with as much personality and charm as Toad Tree Cottage. From curated decor to lush and calming garden, Toad Tree is an ideal spot for a holiday. Great location too. Can't recommend it enough! Interesting listings like this are the reason AirBnB is so great.

  • Spacious old home on a farm, with plenty of birdlife and very peaceful. Lots of lovely old furniture, sash windows and period tiled floors. Not for those looking for a chrome and glass experience, but with all the modern conveniences like good wi-fi and modern appliances. We also made friends with the owner's dogs who popped across to visit.

  • What a place. We had a lovely family time there and all expectations were met. A large spacious entertainment area, large ensuite bedrooms, huge kitchen and verandah with all the equipment required. (Full chest freezer and double door fridge) and best of all a friendly lovely team that helped get the place back to spanking new every morning! (With a smile and laugh)

  • Great place to stay while on business in Zululand

    Simon2018-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • Ngoye Lodge is absolutely beautiful and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. The only thing to note is that you are not renting the entire house but rooms in the house and the communal areas are shared with others which is not what we expected. When we spoke to Taryn about this on our arrival she was lovely and we arranged that if anyone else checked in we would move to the smaller cottage, no-one else did so we had the whole place to ourselves which was heaven. Many thanks

    Pia2018-01-16T00:00:00Z
  • What a fantastic property! We stayed in the two bedroom cottage which was very spacious and modern, daily cleaning and access to the pool. Taryn was very communicative and flexible in her hosting. The area is very picturesque and is nearby to shops and restaurants. We had a lovely stay and would definitely recommend!

  • Jen’s home is stunning, rooms are spacious, modern and stylish, the views are spectacular- sundowners on the long verandah are a treat. Sliding doors open to let the cool breeze through, and air cons are provided in the bedrooms. Great undercover outdoor play area for the kids. The home is situated in a secure estate, with lots of nature walks available, and is also close to the beach (which is accessed through the nature reserve). It’s the perfect getaway from city, the beaches are wild and vast, perfect for long strolls and enjoying the dunes and forests surrounding them. Set in the countryside of Ongoye Hills, 2 km. from the Indian Ocean, this villa (2006) features a private infinity pool with uninterrupted views and magnificent sundowners. The sand beach, lagoon for fishing, golf course and Nature Reserve are around the corner. Wildparks for safaris are at a 1 hour drive only. The villa has free daily cleaning services in all rooms and kitchen. Sit, relax and enjoy! NB. there is a 30% surcharge on the listed rental fee for reservations between 6-10 guests.
Ongoye View Residence is a beautiful spacious (300m2) villa for 2-10 persons, comfortable and open, build on a secured large plot (4000m2) with a majestic entrance. The entire villa has alarm and is tastefully furnished and decorated. It benefits from its own large private rim-flow pool (no safety net) with loungers and umbrellas, easy accessible via the large outside wooden stair and platform. Eye-catcher of the villa are the 2 verandas. Stunning sundowners can be viewed while relaxing on it. The property has four bedrooms on the ground floor, three of which have king or queensize beds and airco, one has 2 bunk beds and a propeller fan. Three bedrooms have thick black cotton doorcurtains that fits in the design of the villa. There are two bathrooms. The first floor is made up of a fully-equipped open-plan kitchen, toilet, living room with an open fire place and an outdoor lounge area with dining table, seats and build-in bbq/braai. There is no television. Weather in Mtunzini is year-round great as it is situated on the east coast of South Africa (KwaZulu Natal) and its shores are lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. It enjoys a warm, coastal climate with plenty of sunshine and a fair amount of (short) light rainfall during some months. Summer is generally quite warm and even the winters are mild to warm. Much of this is owing to its subtropical latitude and its affiliation with the Indian Ocean. Mokey, the service manager, is in charge of cleaning and maintenance. I know him for many years and he is really good and committed. Pie is my neighbour and best friend. She will take care of you during your stay and she can organise tours, daytrips and advise on the must-do's in Mtunzini and KZN. Mtunzini (Zulu for ‘place in the shade’) is Zululand's best keep secret and is a natural hideaway for holidaymakers who love the sea, lagoon, nature reserve, golf and safaris. The primary attraction of Mtunzini is its natural beauty with extensive indigenous forests, a pristine estuary and unspoiled, long quiet beaches. Numerous nature trails and hiking routes have been mapped out. There are restaurants (don't miss the 'Fat Cat'), coffee shops, pharmacists, a clinic, a large Spar and other shops in the village and Mtunzini caters for all everyday shopping needs as well as dining out options. The lagoon provides the perfect location for fishing and water skiing and there are cruises available for events and sunset outings. A well patronized country club around the corner caters for golf, tennis and squash, while there are facilities for bowls and horse-riding in the village as well. A visitor friendly ski-boat club provides support for estuary and offshore fishing. Mtunzini is highly rated by birdwatchers with over 300 species recorded in the area. Mtunzini is an hour drive from Durban’s King Shaka International Airport and is an ideal gateway to game reserves for safaris (fe. Hluhluwe/Umfolozi, Thula thula, Mkuze, Pinda), Drakensbergen, world heritage sites and areas of historical interest. You will fall in love with the village and the villa!
  • We had such a super time at Erik’s place. The view was breathtaking and we had the most relaxing holiday. Mtunzini is beautiful and we made use of the many nature trails at our doorstep. The house is gorgeous and we had everything we needed.

  • Stop looking, you have found the most amazing vacation home for your next holiday. The house is even more beautiful in person than it is in the pictures. It is off the beaten path so even in the high holiday season you are never overwhelmed by crowds. The hospitality of Erik and his staff was absolutely wonderful. You will be well looked after and very comfortable (even with large groups). There is no tv but that is easy to get over when you all the board games, the fuzzball table, and the ping pong table (table tennis). My family and I had a wonderful and unforgetable holiday.

  • Great place. Comfortable tipis with comfy beds and clean linen. Peaceful spot on a farm. Very unique. Great for kids. This is a few minutes drive from Mtunzini. We were taken on a tour of the farm which was really fun. The showers are good - they have hot water, though they are basic. The staff are very helpful. There is a communal area which provides shade and also has cooking facilities. Certainly off the beaten track and very peaceful. Only area where it could be improved is more regular cleaning of the bathroom sinks and loos.

  • A very special place for all the ones who love nature and the outdoors. The tipi was very cosy and you can see the stars. Norma is a very kind and friendly woman and we felt very welcome and almost like home. She even made us a nice fire. The dogs are also very lovely and stayed with us all the time. We can recommend this place a lot and will definitely come back one day 😊

  • Great value for money. Warm KZN hospitality. If you enjoy getting out of town and don't enjoy posh hotels, this is the perfect option.

Kids loved the open space, adults loved the fresh air and a perfect environment for a quality family time was created. Thank you to our amazing hosts for their awesome hospitality.

  • We had an amazing time at Michael's place! The tipe was nice, our son loved it. We sat at the fireplace at night and enjoyed the company of all the friendly animals at the farm. Michael showed us around and let us interact with alle the animals. Our son really enjoyed the horses. Thanks again Michael!
