>200 airbnb/trip advisor +ve comments over 12 years tells it all. Sea Otter Cottage and the separate Sea Shore Cottage, at an incredible location in Ackergill, just a mile from North Coast 500 route but <2 miles from Wick's supermarkets, gourmet restaurants and railway station. Open all year. We suggest: Fly Luton, Gatwick or Bristol ->Inverness then relax on ScotRail's Club 50s scenic "Far North Line" e.g. Fly 9.30-12, Rail 2-6pm. Total off season travel cost from £100 return!
Looking out north across sheltered Sinclair Bay towards Orkney and the Pentland Skerries lighthouse, this fully equipped, foreshore cottage has unforgetable sea views. As the tide comes in across the sheltered bay, you could be watching a living oil painting of the ocean surf. Orcas are regularly visible, seabirds and seals abound and guests do sometimes even see our shy sea otter. It might seem far north but is still south of all of Norway and is well worth the two hours scenic seaside journey on the road up from lnverness. Don't miss the Store House restaurant (M-Sat 9-6, Sun 10-5) just 12 miles north of the Kessock bridge, or Dunrobin Castle near Golspie. For those who enjoy eating out there are in Wick several excellent local hotels and even a gourmet French restaurant. (Greetings to Andre) McKays friendly hotel (give Rupert's personal greetings to Murray) holds the Guinness book record for the "Shortest street in the world" Further afield in Scrabster (20 miles) both the Upper Deck and the distinctively ethical Captain's Galley ("Which" Best Fish Restaurant in the UK: 2008) are highly recommended - The Castle of Mey and Gringoe / Sinclair castle are well worth visits while the hinterland is a major bird sanctuary. Thurso has a world class surfing beach. Wick has regular sea boat/harbour festival and fly-ins for light aircraft. lf you love the sea and tranquillity this is the place for you to sit reading by a traditional open fire or to go for shoreline walks. At high tide, with only the sea and the surf visible through the French doors; you could even be at sea without seasickness. Being East coast midges are virtually never a problem, yet facing west, the view from the kitchen of the sun setting over "Ackergill Towers" (try googling it and compare the prices!) with every wave of a high tide being tinged with pink has to be seen to be believed. But if you in the light of all this beauty you still need the internet, there is free Wi-F in both Sea Shore and Sea Otter Cottages. As in so many places in the Highlands the quality varies. Hopefully you will find enough enjoyment of the location for this not to be too big a problem, and for some even an advantage. If messages are essential good Wi-Fi access is available in Weatherspoons in the centre of town, or in the foyer of McKays or the Norseman hotels. If requested, an ink-jet printer/photocopier/scanner can be provided. Travel: Direct by air to Wick from Aberdeen or Edinburgh and hire a car from Richard's friendly local garage. Alternatively fly to lnverness airport (direct, low cost flights from Luton, Gatwick, Heathrow, Liverpool, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Dublin, Leeds, Manchester or Newcastle), or else travel more sedately up to Wick by coach or by the comfortable scenic train.
Wonderful Caithness - Track down their website. No mountains but also (unlike the West coast of Scotland) virtually never any midges. Fantastic sunsets over the castle a field away next door. Google Ackergill Tower for another website with lots of local info. One of Britain's best beaches a short walk away
  • We loved our stay, it is so peaceful and quiet

  • A spectacular location! Thoroughly recommended.

    Druin2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • At high tide you could be in a boat, with waves lapping below, and at low you have an amazing stretch of coastline to explore. South along Ackergill beach for castles rising through the mist, and north for sweeping views. Loved every day of it!

  • Beautiful spot to watch and listen to the waves and sounds of nature. Loved seeing the otters and a puffin. Very calming.

  • Super place, everything you could possibly need and want. Fast response to communication. Great scenery, fantastic location and view's. Will be back.

  • Expect a fantastic view from this lovely little cottage. Ideal place for a quiet holiday, but there are shops about 5 minutes drive away.

  • The view from the patio is breathtaking - didn't want to move! We saw seals in the bay whilst sat on the patio which was a treat 😍 Sea Otter cottage is well located for loads of nearby sites and venues and nearby Reiss sands is an absolutely stunning beach. The cottage was well supplied with everything you need and was comfortable and cosy. Would definitely recommend for a relaxing break. I imagine it would also be stunning in the colder months and we had some stunning sunsets with Ackergill tower as the focal point - blissful - book up now! ❤️

    Heather2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • This place has it all. Fantastic views of the Sea. Additional blankets, towels, tea towels, bath robes and plenty of cutlery. Microwave, Electric hob and cooker, tumble dryer, heating, log fire. The property has a lived in homely feel and was perfect for our needs. If you want a relaxing time away from the city and gadgets this is the place to stay. I would include additional pictures of each room and its views as the photographs supplied don't give it the full justice it deserves. The decor is a little dated but who cares when you have views to die for.

Keiss Harbour House (1833) is a stunning Grade A-listed historic property nestled in a quiet fishing village on the northeast coast of Scotland. On the scenic North Coast 500, the spacious house is ideal for entertaining family & friends. With 5 bedrooms (sleeps 12) and 3 bathrooms, amenities include a 750 square-foot Great Hall, large open-plan kitchen, 3 fires, underfloor heating throughout, laundry and steam room. Explore northern highland ruins, beaches, castles, distilleries, golf and more!
Keiss Harbour House was originally the fishing station for Keiss Harbour which was built in 1831 during the herring boom. The building was restored and converted into a house around 2004, and has a dramatic combination of history and contemporary styling. The harbour was built by James Bremner, naval architect and harbour builder who was born near Keiss in 1784. He apprenticed in a Greenock shipyard before returning to Wick to establish his own successful ship-building business. He was also a well-known as a wreck-raiser, re-floating 236 sunken or stranded ships, including Brunel's famous steam-ship, the SS Great Britain, when she ran aground off Ireland in 1845. Keiss Harbour owes it's longevity to Bremner's clever design of the harbour breakwater made possible by his invention of a new type of crane and pile-driver. Not many harbours are left in this condition today. The house directly overlooks the harbour, which is still used by fishing boats. On sunny days, the harbour is a delightful place to sit and watch the boats come and go, and the house itself is arranged so that every room takes advantage of the uninterrupted sea views. The reception rooms are located upstairs, to maximise this advantage. The bedrooms are located on the middle floor and all have fabulous sea views; two bedrooms have balcony doors opening to the harbour. The house is full of maps, old photos, history books and reference guides (waking, whisky, fishing, archaeology and more). Make use of the steam room after a day of exploring the coast, settle into a book from the shelves or pull out a jigsaw, cook a lobster dinner (sea to plate in a matter of minutes) in the well-equipped kitchen while overlooking the sea, and spend the evening around the large dining table hand crafted from the house's original roof beams, or enjoy your complimentary bottle of local whisky around any of the three fireplaces...just some suggestions for using our unique space. And this is just inside the house, wait until you see what's on your doorstep.
Keiss Harbour House is uniquely situated in an old (and quietly active) fishing harbour which was built during the 19th-century herring boom. Beaches (both pebbled and sandy) stretch either side of the house. A half-mile walk from the front door will take you back in time through Scotland's history as you explore two Iron Age brochs, the 16th-century ruins of Keiss castle overlooked by the 'newer' 18th-century tower house, and a WWII pillbox. A southerly walk takes you past WWII anti-tank barriers to the long, white-sandy stretches of Keiss and Reiss beaches where you will find Wick Golf Club (a challenging links course nestled behind the sand dunes of Sinclair's Bay). This section of beach is perfect for surfers, families, dog-walkers and horse-riders alike. On the opposite point of Sinclair's Bay is Noss Head lighthouse and the remains of a WWII radio station where German radio traffic was intercepted, most of it in the five-letter grouping of the Enigma code. Park here to explore on foot the impressive 15th-century ruins of Sinclair Girnigoe Castle. Sinclair's Bay is ideally situated for spotting puffins, kittiwakes, guillemots, cormorants, shags, herons, dolphins, and seals - who shelter in the harbour when the orcas are migrating past. And don't forget that you will always find a warm welcome at Keiss pub, a short walk from the house.
  • A great place located right on the small harbour and really very secluded for us since no one came down to the harbour at this tome of year. All the bedrooms were a good size with comfortable beds. Large room is great for get together and dinner time. Kitchen very modern and well stocked with all the equipment you need. Light a fire and have a dram and enjoy the north of Scotland.

    Courtney2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • The view in the morning is amazing, house has all amenities you can wish for.

  • I stayed in Keiss Harbour House with a group of friends for a break away and the place is simply fantastic. A large fully equipped kitchen paired with a massive dining room, open fires and a huge dinner table make eating together fun and entertaining. The sleeping rooms are clean and have great views of the harbour. No corners were cut with facilities such as washing machine and dryer and the bed linen is of excellent quality. Everything you will need for a great stay is there and if on the rare occasion you need something then Jill is always ready to answer any questions. I would not hesitate to recommend Keiss Harbour House to anyone.

    Darren2019-11-02T00:00:00Z
  • Keiss Harbour House is the perfect space for family groups with children. We were 6 adults and 4 children and stayed for 7 nights. The house was very spacious, well equipped and good value. The location on the harbour was spectacular. Among other things the children enjoyed the beach, football fields and play park in Keiss, just a few minutes walk away, puffin watching at Dunnet Head, the animal centre and gardens at the Castle of Mey, the nature trail at Dunnet Forest, walks to the ruinous castles of Old Keiss and Sinclair Grinigoe and visits to the cinema and pottery workshop in Thurso. We loved our stay and will highly recommend it to our friends.

Morven Pod is situated next to Stroma Pod in the rural village of Auckengill in Caithness, five miles south of John O'Groats. Brand new this year Morven Pod is tastefully furnished in shades of mauve and grey with sea and countryside views. The shower block is just a few paces away and Morven Pod has it's own shower, toilet and sink within the block so no shared facilities! All bedding and towels are provided as well as complimentary tea, coffee, sugar, milk and breakfast cereals.

Please do not allow your dog on the bed. Dog towels and blankets are provided.
Auckengill is home to the Broch Centre which houses some interesting Viking and Pictish artefacts. We are five miles south of John O'Groats and half a mile off the NC500 route. The Castle of Mey, the former home of the Queen Mother is about 25 minutes drive away. Nearby there are long sandy beaches which even in summer do not get busy.
  • The Pods are an amazing experience with great location but what makes this great experience is the amazing host- Deborah! Definitely the place to stay if you're considering either Thurso or Wicks.

  • We had a lovely overnight stay in the pod, very well thought out and cosy space with everything you need there in the pod.

    Jodie-Emma2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • Great place what a find! Super comfortable pod the bed was a delight to stay on - a proper bed! Everything has been really thought through. Was very worried before staying about the separate toilet block because I’m pregnant - however even in the middle of the night it was great as there was a flood light which went on as soon as you come out of the pod which lights until the block, and in the block is a night light so you can see = no scrambling in the dark. Host was lovely. Pod was lovely. Amenities were lovely. Very happy visitors. Thank you for having us!

Pleasant, modern, clean, double bedroom, with very comfortable double bed and shower room recently newly fitted with waterfall overhead shower. Outlook is to the back of the property overlooking beautiful moorland scenery and completely private. Look out for moorland birds, curlews, hunting owls, deer etc. Very peaceful, quiet nights. You may hear sheep in the distance at times as a small farm at the road end. Breakfast is served in the front room overlooking the sea, beach and castles.
There is a collie dog on the premises who is not allowed to roam the house. She barks at first but then, when she is happy you will treat her owner well she will settle down!!! This house is very clean and you will not be aware of 'doggy' smell etc. She sleeps in utility room off the kitchen and may offer you her toys in the hope you will play. However, you do not need to have anything to do with her if you are unsure of animals. Any questions - just ask. Please be aware that this is a very clean and comfortable home. It is also a smoke free environment therefore no smoking is allowed in the house. All bedding is non-allergenic/man-made fibres, and washed in non-biological liquid.
The village of Keiss is a short drive from the house - or you could walk there within 15 minutes. There is a small hotel which offers a restaurant and a bar. Booking ahead for a meal is advisable. (Phone no: 01955 631233) There are no shops in the village. There is a lovely harbour area and access to an extensive beach.
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Anne’s home which is located in a very quiet, peaceful spot. Anne is very welcoming and friendly and gave us useful tips for exploring the area and eating out. Our room was comfortable and very clean with a lovely en suite shower room. A delicious breakfast of cereal, fruit, yoghurt and toast was provided.

  • Anne gave us a warm welcome to her home. She is a lovely host who really cared for us and gave us helpful tips for our evening meal and our trip all around Scotland. Our bedroom was small yet cosy, quiet and beautiful. Breakfast was delicious and varied and hand-made by Anne just to our personal tastes. Our overall experience was just awesome and we really felt welcome and at home.

Caithness View Luxury Farm Lodges are situated on our family’s farm, Barrock Mains, in the most Northerly County on the Scottish mainland! With acres of lovely, south facing farmland for you to explore, these beautiful brand new deluxe lodges offer far reaching views which some say are the best in the County! The lodges are only a 10 minute drive from John O'Groats and 5 miles away from the NC500 route and the coast. The main towns of Wick and Thurso are only a 20 minute drive away. The lodges allow visitors to enjoy an authentic experience of the ‘great outdoors’ and ‘getting back to nature’ with the added luxury of very comfy beds and soft furnishings. The beautiful vaulted ceilings in each spacious lodge sets them apart from the rest. Our lodges sleeps up to 6 people and include a shower room, kitchen area, open plan living area with a sofa bed, a double bed and a further separate twin bedroom. All bedding and towels are supplied and included in the daily rate. The lodges also have private BBQ huts so you can “eat out” and enjoy a tasty meal using locally sourced, high quality produce if you wish to. Barrock Mains is a working farm and there’s always plenty to observe from shearing the sheep in June to ploughing the fields in the winter. There are also many wonderful walks to enjoy. An hour’s walk from the lodges, heading west, brings you to Oalston House. The views here are inspirational and only the sound of the Lapwing (Shochadh) and Curlew can be heard. Whichever season you choose to visit, Caithness View gives visitors the opportunity to experience a simpler way of life, which can be shared with friends and family, and to explore the wonderful county of Caithness and all it has to offer.
  • We loved our time at Swallow's Lodge which we used as our base for a number of day trips around the North. It was perfectly located to visit John O Groats, Thurso and further west to Smoo Cave. Sharon was the perfect host and helped provide clear instructions and research into some of the activities and locations we planned to visit. She really went the extra mile and it was greatly appreciated. The lodge itself was perfectly styled and had everything we needed for our stay. The BBQ hut was a nice addition we sadly didn't get to use, but the kitchen was great for preparing meals between outings. The beds were super comfy and the peace and quite made for a very relaxing stay. Loved the little fire place to stay cozy at night and the views from the balcony were fantastic. Would love to stay again but next time for longer.

    Craig2020-01-22T00:00:00Z
  • Very good

    David2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • Easy to find with the very clear instructions Sharon gave us, great communication & just overall amazing hosts. I left my battery pack in the lodge as we left & it was no problem at all for me to return & collect it. The layout was great, waking up to countryside views & sheep just metres away was beautiful. When we stayed we were the only booking so it was so lovely & peaceful, they really have done a great job with all aspects of the lodge. Would recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay in the area that wants some calm, peace & coziness.

    Ellie2019-11-13T00:00:00Z
  • If you are looking for a place for some quality downtime and for some peace then this is the place for you. With supermarkets a mere 15 minutes away you can stock up on necessities that you can use in the BBQ hut or in the lodge itself. The lodge is 20 minutes from John o’Groats which is a must visit. The lodge is so beautifully built and decorated, with windows over looking the vast farm and the night sky. Your nights will be staring at the night sky with tons of stars and your mornings will be waking up to sheep grazing quietly and greenery that stretches all around. Steven was an amazing host besides being accommodating, he entertained us with his jokes and stories, gave us tips on what to see and do and even offered to take us out to his farm for a taste of what it’s like to handle the daily chores with the animals. Communicating with Sharon was a breeze and she helped us find the lodge with no trouble at all. We didn’t feel like leaving and wished we stayed for longer.

    Arlene2019-10-24T00:00:00Z
  • The lodge was very cute and really spacious. Great facilities and lovely views out over the sheep fields. It was very quiet. There are only two lodges there and we were the only lodge booked so it was pure isolation. Would highly recommend and would be great for a family as it has a separate room with the extra beds in and they even provided badminton racquets. A lovely finishing touch.

    Emilia2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • With this Airbnb being new and not very many reviews it was a little worrisome, but from the beginning the host was very responsive to my questions. When we arrived we were greeted by the owner and felt very welcomed. The property is so inviting and very clean. The kitchen is very well stocked with everything you will need to make a nice meal. And the bbq huts are such an nice touch. Lots of parking. The beds are comfortable and the bathroom is spacious enough for a place this size. The location is very central to many sites. John O’Groats is a short drive as is Thurso. I will miss waking up to sheep grazing right outside the window. I would love the opportunity to come back for another stay!

Karibu (welcome in Swahili) is a charming well presented property, situated in the quiet coastal village of Ackergill, close to Wick airport and just off Route 500 with lots of local walks and coastal scenery. The ground floor consists of a spacious living room with well equipped kitchen and small office. There is a downstairs bathroom (with walk-in shower) and single bedroom. Upstairs is a double bedroom and a twin bedroom. The garden is enclosed making it a safe space for children and pets.
We love this house, and have done our best to equip it well, and make it as homely as possible for guests. With fantastic night skies to be seen from upstairs we hope you love both the area and the house as much as we do.
Tesco supermarket is very close by. There is also a small playpark just 1 minute away from the house. A great safe place for kids to play and explore with benches and a view to Ackergill beach.
  • Sharon’s place is in a great location and was very clean with everything you could wish for and more. I can’t recommend enough.

  • Great accommodation in Ackergill on the edge of Wick. Very clean and cosy with a superb host who is really helpful. It has everything you need for a great stay, location, amenities and value for money. I cannot recommend it highly enough, it is always my first choice when staying in the area.

  • This is a cozy place but with lots of sleeping space. The ocean themed decor was a nice touch and makes the house very welcoming, and the sound of the sea was a fantastic greeting. We were looking for quiet in a beautiful setting but still close to town, and we found it here.

  • Followed Sharon’s directions and found the place easily—and just as described. Nice view from upstairs!

  • A beautiful house with a great view from the top bedroom window. Everything was perfect (except the weather on the day we went to Orkney, but that can't be helped). Would highly recommend to all.

Noss Head is a working lighthouse on the far north of the Scottish Mainland, much loved by local walkers and visiting bird-watchers alike The Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage welcomes up to six people in self-catering accommodation. Bedroom 1 can be set up as a double or twins (let us know what you prefer), Bedroom 2 has full size twin beds and Bedroom 3 has adult-sized bunks.
The Lighthouse Keeper's Cottage was built about 60 years ago for Principal Lightkeeper and his family. Other buildings in the compound are Noss Head lighthouse, an engine room and stable block, and our neighbours in the Occasional Keeper’s Cabin next door and in the 19th Century cottage by the Lighthouse.
What do you want from a holiday? If you love Scotland’s wildlife and landscapes you can go on wildlife tours on land or by boat and maybe see dolphins or orca, or visit the bird centre at Forsinard, or just go outside the cottage to see our wonderful sea-birds. There are also farms you can visit for a family day out. Like visiting stately homes? Go to Dunrobin Castle or visit the Queen Mother’s home at the Castle of Mey. If you prefer ruined castles, explore Castle Sinclair Girnigoe on foot from the cottage or glimpse Keiss Castle across Sinclair Bay. If you like even more ancient sites, go to the Hill o’ Many Stanes and Camster Cairns and be sure to visit our brochs and find out more at the Broch Centre. If you want to know how people used to live – maybe your family came from here – visit Whaligoe stepsand the heritage centres at Castletown, Thurso and Wick. The Dunbeath Heritage Centre houses the Sinclair Clan library which used to be here at Noss Head. Food and drink? For Whisky, visit Old Pulteney Distillery in Wick, Wolfburn Distillery in Thurso, or drop into Clynelish or Glenmorangie in Sutherland on your way past. Gin lovers should be sure to visit Rock Rose gin in Dunnet Bay. Caithness has treats for foodies too with Caithness Chocolate, Caithness Summer Fruits (there’ll be a pot of their jam in the cottage for you when you arrive), and fine dining at Ackergill Tower and MacKays in Wick.
  • The lighthouse keepers cottage was just perfect for our long weekend get away, situated away from any hustle and bustle but close enough to reach lots of interesting places near by. Warm and cosy especially considering it’s location in the Winter. Steve and Benadicta were extremely communicative and helpful with any queries we had prior to the trip. All in all a fab stay and we can’t wait to come back!

    Suzi2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic location accompanied by a cottage with a number of extra touches that make you feel like you are staying in a family home. Everything you’ll need has been catered for. Conveniently located to hiking trails for amazing walks or a short drive into town for supplies. Will definitely be coming back for a longer stay.

  • We are a family that travels full time world schooling our children. We originally chose to stay here for the experience. Not having alot of knowledge about lighthouses and their importance in Scotland particular we knew it would still be an adventure. I want to say our stay has by far been the most knowledgeable and wonderful stay we've had to date. The house was much larger than in photos, the beds all comfortable and accomidating, plenty of games, puzzles and movies to entertain yourself, just absolutely wonderful. My favorite was the books and information provided, alot of time went into this cottage and providing details, and history. In the information book Ben has detailed information about the different items in the cottage being local made. Books for all ages are also provided all about lighthouses. My children found a pamphlet with white binding about a man that was born to a lighthouse keeper and his life as a keepers son during and after the war. He lived at Noss Head and shares so much information about his time at the lighthouse. My children ages 11-16 all explored the grounds identifying things he spoke of. We decided to not make this just an adventurous stay but educational one with all of the books at our fingertips. This place isn't just an adventure for children but even adults it's just a wonderful experience. I also wanted to add I reached out to Ben for more information and always received a quick, kind and informative response. Noss Head will always be a special place in our hearts.

  • Absolutely stunning location, fast replies from the hosts, extremely comfortable beds and good amenities. 100% recommend.

  • Having just become parents with our 5 week old daughter, we decided we wanted to go somewhere we had never stayed before prior to me returning to work. We knew the general area of Wick was our desired destination and began the hunt through Airbnb. It didn't take too long before we found this hidden gem and looking at the listing, we just had to book our 4 night stay. We confirmed our booking and sent the host a wee message letting them know a bit about us and a few days later we had a reply. We arrived on the 1st day just after the allowed check in time and were met at the property by the host, although the key for the cottage is kept in a key safe at the front door and you could just let yourself in. Unfortunately, there was a slight issue with the heating oil being low prior to us arriving preventing the central heating and hot water to be used, however this was soon resolved and the host had scattered electric heaters throughout the cottage to warm it up for our arrival. What a stylish, well organised and beautiful cottage. There was nothing we wanted for, with the kitchen fully equipped with everything we needed to cook, a washing machine and tumble drier, oh and even a dishwasher! The bedrooms were extremely comfortable, the living room was a great place to unwind with a TV and freeview and fast and free WiFi. If you like to eat at a table, the dining room has a large table and every room has a view over the sea. The property is a 5 minute drive to Wick and a 5 minute walk to Castle Sinclair Girnigoe. Wick has everything you need from Tesco, Lidl, B&M, Co-op and so much more. A trip to Whaligoe Steps must be added to your itinerary if you haven't heard of it. So, if you're debating whether or not this is right for you, I couldn't recommend it enough. Clean, stylish and a home from home. If you're travelling with a baby, a travel cot was provided, although we had our own, not knowing this. Copy our video into your internet browser to get a small idea of what we did https://youtu.be/sSHMgX_iWhQ

  • We enjoyed a very warm and friendly welcome. A pot of tea and shortbread in front of a panoramic view of the sea and Keiss Castle. Our room also had an encompassing view. It was very comfortable and well appointed with a great bed. We could have settled in for a week. Patsy and Tony gave us good advice on local dining. Breakfast was delicious and more than ample with fresh coffee and tea. A wonderful stay with very nice people.

Feedback from scores of guests over the past 4 years tells far more than can be included here. Sea Shore Cottage & the adjacent, but entirely separate Sea Otter Cottage, are at an incredible location in Ackergill Haven just a mile from the North Coast 500 route yet less than 2 miles from Wick's supermarkets, restaurants and railway station. Try "Sea Otter" on Facebook for information updates. Open all year. Suggestion.Fly to Inverness and then relax on ScotRail's 4 hour scenic "Far North Line"
Sea Otter Cottage when purchased in 2006 had a small, very poorly built annexe. Following a storm in 2015, this collapsed so badly that it had to be totally rebuilt from the foundation upwards. In the short term this proved to be extremely expensive such that major debts are still outstanding. However the final result is a magnificent new build holiday cottage following the latest regulations. Looking north towards Orkney and the Pentland Skerries lighthouse, this wonderful holiday location is now a fully equipped, foreshore cottage with quite unforgettable sea views. As the tide comes in across the sheltered bay, you could be watching a living oil painting of the ocean surf. The kitchen and living room windows are so close to the high tide that it's hard to believe and the upstairs bedrooms have the same fabulous views across the bay as Sea Otter Cottage next door. Orcas are regularly visible, seabirds and seals abound. It might seem far north but it is still south of all of Norway and is well worth the two hour scenic seaside journey on the road up from Inverness Don't miss the Store House restaurant (M-Sat 9-6, Sun 10-5) just 12 miles north of the Kessock bridge, or Dunrobin Castle near Golspie. Alternatively one can enjoy 4 hours of relaxation on the Far North Railway. (If aged over 50 making use of the special Scotrail concessions) For those who enjoy eating out there are in Wick several excellent local hotels and even a well established gourmet French restaurant (greetings to Andre). McKays friendly hotel (give Rupert's personal greetings to Murray) holds the Guinness book record for the "Shortest street in the world" Further afield in Scrabster (20 miles) both the Upper Deck and the distinctively ethical Captain's Galley ("Which" Best Fish Restaurant in the UK: 2008) are highly recommended - The Castle of Mey, the Gringoe castle ruin and the Sinclair clan museum are worth visits while the hinterland is a major bird sanctuary. Light aircraft can easily land at the airfield where the Spitfire which found the Tirpitz re-fueled on it's way take it's pictures back to London, and Wick also has a regular sea boat and harbour festival. Thurso has a world class surfing beach. lf you love the sea and tranquillity this is the place for you to watch the ocean surf, to sit reading while listening to the waves, or to go for carefree and carfree walks along the shore in either direction. At high tide, with only the sea and the surf visible; you could even be at sea without the seasickness. Being east coast Scotland midges are virtually never a problem, yet paradoxically facing west, the view of the sun setting over "Ackergill Towers"restored castle (try googling it and compare the prices) with every wave of a high tide being tinged with pink has to be seen to be believed. If needed, an ink-jet printer/photocopier/scanner can be rented at low cost. Travel: Direct by air to Wick from Aberdeen or Edinburgh and hire a car from Richard's friendly local garage. Alternatively fly to Inverness (direct, low cost flights from Luton, Gatwick, Heathrow, Liverpool, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Dublin, Leeds, Manchester or Newcastle), or else travel more sedately up to Wick by coach or on the comfortable scenic train.
Wonderful Caithness - Track down their website. No mountains but also (unlike the West coast of Scotland) virtually never any midges. Fantastic sunsets over the castle a field away next door. Enter “Ackergill Tower” on the internet or for additional information try googling “northcoast500”, “caithnessorg”, “undiscoveredscotlandcouk”, or “walkhighlandscouk"
  • This is a place you will not forget, this is a place you will not want to leave, this is a place you will want to visit time and time again. A beautiful home, warm and welcoming, fully supplied with towels, toilet rolls, and toiletries. The rooms are spacious and the views are spectacular. ideal for coastal walks, and piece and quiet, it’s tranquil and it’s great watching the sea from the window. Ships and lighthouses at night glow. The tower and beach, cliffs and pier to see by day. The ideal home from home setting.

    Peter2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful location (even in wintery weather!). A lovely, warm comfortable stay in a beautifully modernised seaside cottage. Everything you could need being provided by a very thoughtful Rupert.

  • Loved being at Sea Shore Cottage. Listening to the waves and birds was such a treat. Loved being right on the water. The cottage was very comfortable and had everything we needed. The information left by our host could not have been more complete. If you are look g for a quiet relaxing spot, look no further. Also great hikes around the area. Where else do you have a castle view like the one we had?!

    Al &Amp; Paula2019-10-16T00:00:00Z
  • A High Point!

    Bryan2019-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • The Sea Shore cottage is exactly that. It is right on the shore. I could just sit and watch the tides come in and out all day but there is plenty to walk around and explore, too. There is a large Tesco within 3 miles of the home so you can buy anything you need. The stairs going up to the bedrooms (and bathroom) are a bit steep so people with mobility issues might want to be aware of that. Rupert has lots of books and lots of local information available in the home. We throughly enjoyed our stay.

    Debrah2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • This little gem was just what we needed in the midst of a lot of traveling. We stayed for three nights and really liked everything about the place. It's right on the water and Rupert's instructions on how to find it are spot on! While it's in a very quiet, almost remote location, it's close to Wick with it's restaurants and shops, as well as a huge Tesco just a couple of miles away. Don't miss walking along the water front to the little "beach" and appreciate this tiny hamlet.

    MarySue2019-08-07T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful and relaxing stay in the comfortable Sea Shore Cottage on a recent visit to Caithness. Hearing the waves lapping on the shore, the birds singing and watching the beautiful sun sets over the water with Ackergill Tower silhouetted against the evening sky was absolutely magical. If you are looking for a peaceful holiday with stunning views then look no further!

  • We have never stayed in a pod before, so weren’t sure what to expect, however the size and facilities were a welcome and pleasant surprise. Deborah has included all the necessities, without crowding the space and everything is well organised and easy to access. The location is great for privacy, but close enough to reach the town and ferry terminal with a small drive. A great mini break away :)

  • We decided to stay here for one night prior to commencing a several day drive from John O'Groats to Lands End. All I can say is that this place is absolutely sublime. We managed to get lost upon arrival but was greeted by an extremely polite and helpful gent who pointed us in the right direction. The lodge was lit up for our late evening arrival and was sufficiently warm too. We didn't get to see much until the morning as the peaceful and isolated nature of the farm meant that you could hardly see you hand infront of your face in the darkness - I loved it. The lodge was modernly decorated and allowed us to cook a hot meal. We had a few drinks in our own comfort without any untoward distraction or noise that you'd get in other rural locations. We will be back and would suggest to anyone reading this - go there and see it for yourself.

  • Christine is a very friendly host and both me and my friend really enjoyed our stay. If you use navigation please note that it will lead you to a different house...so follow the signs to Castle View b&b.

  • This is my first experience of Airbnb and it will certainly not be the last! Christine was very welcoming and helpful during my stay. She was always happy to provide information about the best places to visit in the area. I will definitely return with my Wife and son. I have no problems recommending this place to other who may still be thinking!

A small Scottish Croft offering a warm welcome and comfortable en suite rooms, breakfast is included. We are situated just six moles from John O Groats on the NC 500 route, located close to many local amenities and perfectly placed for the Orkney ferries. Castle Mey, historic Bronze age brochs and ruined castles are just some of the attractions. Fancy a wee dram? Then visit the famous Pultney Distilley in Wick or sample the Rock Rose Gin at Dunnet. We look forward to welcoming you.
John O Groats, Dunnet Head, Noss Light House, The Stacks, Castle Mey. Depending on the time of year Whale Watch in late May, or the Northern Lights in November.
