Gleannan is a fantastic base for those with a passion for the outdoors. It is well located for surfing, body boarding, sea kayaking, boating, scuba diving, rock climbing, water skiing, fishing (sea, salmon, trout), cycling, running, and of course excellent coastal and hill walking. The cottage has a lovely homely feel to it with a comfortable lounge for watching local wildlife from the window. If you are very lucky you may see eagles - golden and white tailed! Binoculars are a good idea too!
Gleannan is Gaelic for 'of the glen'. The cottage is a traditional style croft house built in 1953 and renovated in 2012 so you are sure to get a real feel for life on Lewis. It's a big part of the reason we love it. The lounge benefits from an open fire which really creates a fantastic atmosphere in the evenings. There is a large collection of surfing, triathlon, rock climbing and cycling magazines to inspire you! Our small library has fiction and non fiction books and reference material you may find interesting during your stay. The kitchen is a great size for 6 and has a washing machine, large indoor pulley for drying and a full size dishwasher. We wanted to offer guests the flexibility of sleeping 7 with doubles or 5 with singles. To accommodate that, the 3rd bed in the Twin bedroom is a folding adult bed with a sprung mattress to provide a comfortable sleep and regular use. We don't want you to have any surprises when you arrive so please make sure you check out the photo's which let you see each room - comments add useful information too. That way you will have a clear idea of what to expect. Other inspirational pictures give you an insight into holidaying on the island. Free High Speed Wifi & Internet throughout the cottage.
  • Gleannan is a super, cosy, clean & well equipped holiday home & ideal as a base to visit the many super beaches, historical sites, galleries, potteries, restaurants etc. on Lewis & Harris. Dave our host was quick to reply to any queries & left clear instructions for access, WiFi, heating etc. We stayed for two weeks & loved it as did our dog. Lovely bench in garden where you can sit & just look at the beautiful view. We didn’t want to leave & hope to be back next year.

  • Lovely cottage, great communication.

  • Had a great week at Gleannan cottage. It was perfect for our 2 boys and us. Great for exploring the west coast of Lewis and being located almost on Pentland Road makes getting over to Stornaway very convenient. Great view out of the living room window to watch the weather roll past.

  • Visited for one week in August. What a wonderful island so much adventure for a family holiday. Dave is a great host with lots of local advice on where to go and nice little touches such as so some local biscuits on arrival. Very homely space made us feel like we were at home straight away. Best air BnB we have stayed in by far.

  • Absolutely fantastic cottage, we’re a family of 4 with a dog and had loads of space. It was sparkling clean and equipped with everything we needed. It was such a good location to see the Isle of Lewis and Harris nothing was too far away. Dalmore beach was fantastic and less than 10 mins from the house so going there of an evening to watch the sun set and the wildlife was amazing! I saw a minke whale feeding for nearly 2 hours and a sea eagle fly right over the cottage. Dave was fantastic with his local tips and all his advice. I highly recommend staying here. Thanks Dave we will definitely be back!

  • A lovely well equipped and spacious house with garden and great views across the glen. Set on a quiet road but within easy reach of the famous sites on the west coast at Carloway and Callanish. Good value for the price and great service from the host.

    Carloway, Scotland, United Kingdom

Carloway is close to Callanish Standing Stones, Garenin blackhouse village, Dalmore beach. You’ll love the location, free wifi, and peaceful environment. Our place is good for couples, solo adventurers, families (with kids), and one well-behaved pet (additional £20 service fee per stay). We are usually at home when our guests are here, so we can offer extensive local knowledge about our history, culture, where to visit, eat, etc. Read our excellent reviews over the last four years.
Our guests have commented that our place is spacious, and well equipped.
This is a rural location. Whilst there are other houses nearby, facilities such as supermarkets, banks, etc are located in Stornoway which is a half hour drive away.
  • The cottage is roomy, well equipped and ideally located to visit the sites on west Lewis. The best thing is the extensive library of books on Scottish and Western Isles history. Also, a large selection of walking maps.

  • Amazing place. Clean, spacious, everything you could need. Great hosts, very warm and welcoming. Jim gave us a great tour the first day we were on the island, we learned a lot we might not have otherwise.

    Victoria2019-09-06T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic stay in Carloway. Jim & Fiona were really helpful when needed but totally respectful of our privacy too. Their local knowledge is phenominal and helped us make the most of our time. Highly recommended

    Edward2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • Best Airbnb I have ever stayed in! Spacious and you find really everything you could possible need! Jim and Fiona are very friendly and helpful. I would definitely come back again!

  • Lovely, friendly hosts who were very welcoming and accommodating to our dog, Spring. Responded to our queries very quickly and checked that we were happy. The flat was flawless, so well contained and equipped, so we felt at home during our 7 day stay. Would recommend to all. Carloway was a lovely location, perfect for getting around the island, and close to lots of local attractions.

    Lai-Yeung2019-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • Jim is not just a superhost, he is a spectacular host! His place is perfect, everything you need is there, and so much more. Jim's knowledge of the area, and tips on what to see and do, made sure we got the most out of our short stay. Nothing is too much trouble, and Jim goes out of his way to make sure everything is perfect for you. I highly recommend a stay here, it's truly magical!

    Jo2019-08-01T00:00:00Z
  • It was excellent and fantastic. The most beautiful place of our trip.

    Fabian2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • The apartment is actually more like a cottage attached to the back of Jim and Fiona's house. The cottage itself was spotless with great layout and space. An incredible local library caters for all interests and Jim offers a tour around the local area - you should definitely take this up. We felt it was a highlight of our whole trip and really gave us an insight into local life now and local history, tying together much of what we had seen on our trip with the insight of a local. The location is fabulous with so much on your doorstep, including beaches, walks and the Callanish Stones. Most of the rest of Lewis is little more than an hour away at its furthest and Jim can offer wonderful recommendations for all locations. Our stay was perfect and offered a much needed 4 day bolt hole on our trip around the Hebrides.

Three bed roomed detached house situated yards from the shore of Loch Carloway (Sea loch). The property has recently been refurbished with a new kitchen, bathroom, new wooden flooring and carpets throughout. It is in the perfect position on the West Coast of the Island to visit such historical sites as the Callanish Standing Stones and the Carloway Broch. There are fishing rods for use, beach furniture and numerous children's toys kept in the detached garage. Wi Fi is also available
There are fishing rods for use, beach furniture and numerous children's toys kept in the detached garage. Wi Fi is also available
There is no shop or petrol station in Carloway. The closest are either at Barvas or Cameron Terrace/Leurbost where you can get a good selection of food, wines and spirits and both have petrol/diesel. They also carry a diverse range of other goods – from midge repellent and fishing gear to surf equipment (Barvas). In Stornoway there are two supermarkets – Tesco near the ferry terminal and the Coop on the way out of town toward the west side. There are fishing rods for use, beach furniture and numerous children's toys kept in the detached garage. Wi Fi is also available. The Doune Braes Hotel provides meals (best to book) and takeaway food. It has a bar and lounge. Forty North (Bragar) does the same but you need to pre-order takeaway and collect. Menus for both Doune Braes and Forty North are in the folder but may be subject to change. There is of course a wide selection of restaurants in Stornoway - An Lanntair has a top class chef in Kenny Mackay and Digby Chick is recommended. Don’t go past Cameron’s fish and chip shop without sampling!
  • An amazing place to relax and adventure from while on the Isle of Lewis. The hosts, Mairi and Kenneth make you feel right at home with lovely touches of welcome. We enjoyed the quietness of its location and the views. Highly recommend this comfortable home for your Hebrides travels.

  • A dream place and kindest hosts. Would come back in a whiff if possible.

    Elke2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • Of all the places I’ve stayed in Scotland, Lithir is my favorite. The house is lovely and very comfortable. There are beautiful views from every window and ever possible amenity a person could need. Kenneth and Mairi shared lots of helpful information before and during our visit. Mairi also invited us to a pop-up community cafe during our visit that had the best food and a cheerful atmosphere. The location makes visiting a wide variety of sights on Lewis quick and easy, and the house is located on a quite road that is pleasant for walks along the Loch. I would absolutely recommend Lithir to anyone visiting the Isle of Lewis.

    April2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful house in the perfect location. 40 minutes drive from Stornoway on good roads. Very central for touring round. Nice welcoming touches. Mairi was a very caring host. Through the back gate and turn right there’s an honesty shed with fresh eggs, freshly grown vegetables and delicious home-made cakes.

    Doris2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • This was our first time in Harris and Lewis and we couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay. The house was lovely and cosy and had everything you needed. Perfect location right on the water and it was an ideal base from which to explore the island. Kenneth and Mairi were great hosts, very warm and welcoming and communication was swift and easy. Absolutely loved Harris and Lewis - we’ll definitely return and when we do, we know exactly where to stay!

    Rebecca2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • A warm house and great welcome in a beautiful place. Kitchen was very well stocked which made us feel at home straightaway. Useful information provided about places to visit. Recommend Blackhouses, Callanish Stones and the community bazaar for secondhand books and nearby beaches - whatever the weather!

    David2019-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • A wonderful location next to the loch surrounded by wildflowers and the sound of birds and insects. Very convenient for exploring Lewis, but quietly situated so the best of both worlds. Lovely welcome from Mairi and excellent directions from Kenny. We didn't want to leave!

  • Cosy, warm, welcoming and comfortable, thank you Christine! We only had time to stay one night. Christine's cottage was perfectly located for all the sites we wished to visit on our trip to Lewis. Wished we could have stayed longer:)

    Lesley2019-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • Where to start - Christine’s place is a real gem. We stayed for two nights but wish it could have been for longer, it was the perfect base for our time on Lewis. The location is ideal for exploring the area and Christine gave us lots of tips on things to do and see which helped us make the most of our time there. The place is brilliantly equipped with lots of really homely touches - plenty of towels, everything you could need in the kitchen (egg cups included!), jigsaws, books, dvds, the works. The bathroom also needs special mention for the best Airbnb shower we have ever experienced! We will definitely stay again if we’re lucky enough to return to Lewis.

    Carloway, Scotland, United Kingdom

Viewforth is a detached, former croft cottage built in 1912. The house overlooks the area where Carloway River flows out into Carloway Loch and is surrounded by green slopes dotted with sheep. On a sunny day or at sunset it is very difficult to drag yourself away from the windows at the front of the house watching the light change the view. The house has a fully enclosed (cocker spaniel proof) back garden and the garden at the front has beautiful views across the loch.
You enter the house through a porch at the front with space for outdoor clothes and shoes. The hallway leads to the living room to the left and separate dining room to the right. Both rooms are filled with light and are cosy. The living room has two recliner leather sofas, a tv with free view channels and a range of books and maps for you to use during your stay. The dining room has a large wooden table with seating for six. The kitchen is reached through the living room and runs along the back of the house. It has loads of cupboard space and is well equipped for cooking during your stay. There is a cooker with electric hob, dishwasher, fridge freezer, tumble drier and microwave. The compact bathroom is between the living room and kitchen under the stairs. It is currently being replaced and will have a mains shower. Photo to follow when it is finished. Upstairs there is a twin bedded room and a spacious master bedroom with a king size bed. Both bedrooms have large fitted wardrobes with plenty of storage space, enough even for those who don’t like to travel light! A travel cot is available if needed. The house is heated by oil fired central heating and is very cosy. At present there is no wi-fi in the house but there is a very strong mobile signal and 4G at the house and surrounding area.
Viewforth is in an area of the Isle of Lewis called Carloway. The house is situated close to the road leading to Gearrannan Blackhouse Village. It is a drive of less than 5 minutes and is described as a “living museum” for visitors showing life in a traditional Scottish blackhouse. A less than 15 minute drive will take you to the Callanish Standing Stones. Three routes take you from Carloway to the main town of Stornoway, all of which are very scenic and let you see different parts of the island. There are two beaches within a 5 minute drive of the house. Dalmore is the closest and biggest. Dalbeg is a wee bit further along the road and it also offers the chance to walk the croft that surrounds the beach. Both beaches are sandy and often have waves rolling in from the Atlantic. They are both signposted on the main road out towards Bragar. Viewforth is in a brilliant position for exploring the whole of the Island because it is well connected by road. Ness in the north of the island is about 25 miles away and the area of Uig is a 30 minute drive away with the reward of a stunning beach at the end. The areas beyond Stornoway are well worth a visit too. Tarbert, the main village in Harris can be easily reached in just over an hour by road and it is a very scenic drive.
  • Gorgeous cottage in a fabulous location

  • A very well equipped house with lovely furnishings. Excellent location to explore Lewis. Hillary is a fantastic host with a wealth of local knowledge.

    Amanda2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • Hilary's home is cosy and comfortable and in a lovely location. Carloway is great for exploring other areas of the island. We also enjoyed taking walks in the mornings and evenings down to the pier or up to Borrowston. Hilary was a very helpful host and responded promptly to any queries that we had. Thank you for having us!

Comfortable bed and all amenities provided. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful with the added bonus of looking out at the wonderful view. Highly recommend Anne’s wonderful home and hospitality. Thank you Anne.

Thee are many galleries and studios in Lewis and Harris . Essence of Harris and the Harris Tweed shop, both in Tarbert are a must visit.
  • An incredible 3 -night stay at A' Bhuail' a Tuath. Cathy and Murdo were very generous and accomodating hosts. As authentic as it gets - Cathy is a Gaelic teacher who has been living in Lewis for almost all of her life, as a result, she is a very knowledgable host who can teach you the beautiful language of Gàidhlig!. The suite is a neat, Hebridean styled suite that was exceptionally spacious and clean for its price. Any problems swiftly dealt with beyond any expectations. Tapadh leibh, Cathy and Murdo!

  • I couldn't have wished for a nicer place to stay in Lewis. It is very tastefully decorated and extremely clean. The number of nice touches is testament to the care and thought that Cathy has put into creating the perfect place to stay in Lewis. I loved it! When I return to Lewis for another visit my first choice will be A' Bhuail' a Tuath. Thanks Cathy!!

    Rob2019-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • Cathy was a lovely host. Her accommodation has all you need and was roomy and comfortable. It has easy access for the interesting places you would want to visit on the west coast. There is a lovely hotel half a mile away for evening meals. Will definitely keep this one on my favourites list.

    Moira2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • A truly lovely place to stay!

    Sue2019-09-12T00:00:00Z
  • My two friends and I, we really enjoyed our stay at Cathys house! She‘s a very kind host and the accomodation is a nice and tidy flat. Also the communication worked quickly and fluently.

    Simone2019-09-10T00:00:00Z
  • This property, although a bit out of the way (you need a car) was perfect for our 3 nights on the Isle of Lewis. Cathy is knowledgeable about local history and happy to discuss the Isle with you, without being intrusive. The sitting room, en suite and bedroom gave us a lovely space to relax. We didn’t like the double bed being against the wall but you could really move it if you want. Cathy provides many, many personal touches which we really appreciated. Thank you for a lovely stay Cathy 😊

    Pamela2019-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • Cathy and her family (and cats!) were a delight. They went to a lot of trouble to make us feel at home. I mean, really really at home. Little things, like offering up a pair of binoculars, and big things, like offering to do our dishes and laundry. It was much more than I expected from an AirBNB, and very, very kind. The island of Lewis is also lovely a lovely place - I would recommend going up to the Butt of Lewis if you have time, it's a highlight. I wish I could have spent weeks there instead of only a few days.

    Jesse2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • Great and impeccable accommodation. Big room, nice bathroom. In the living room, we could warm food in the microwave or prepare tea and coffee. Murdo and Cathy asked us fresh water every day. Our used dishes were collected and washed every morning by our guests. Our stay was pleasant. Great location to visit the beautiful sites of northern Lewis Island: Garenin blackhouses, Arnol, Doune's broch, the beautiful Dalmore beach (surf), and further north, Port of Ness, the lighthouse from Butt of Lewis and Eoropia Beach. Take your time! Everything is beautiful!

    Carloway, Scotland, United Kingdom

Completely refurbished, refurnished and re- carpeted, this detached property, all on one level, offers luxury accommodation in a peaceful rural setting. The property comprises spacious lounge with wonderful views, 2 well appointed bedrooms, study offering a quiet haven, large dining kitchen, with boot room off, quality range cooker and integrated appliances and fully tiled bathroom with separate bath and large shower. Extensive, fenced gardens. Parking.
Carloway Croft offers comfortable family accommodation of a high standard and is a real home from home.
Carloway is a small village on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis close to a number of significant historical sites, including the Callanish Standing Stones and the Blackhouse Village at Gearrannan. There are no shops in Carloway, the main shopping centre being in Stornoway, a 30 minute drive from the house. Supplies are available at the garages at Barvas and Leurbost which are both a 20 minute drive from the house. The property is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty, with the Carloway River close by, offering wonderful walks where, in season, salmon can be seen leaping up the river, herons, shags and many other birds are plentiful and otters play in the local harbour. Sea and golden eagles can also be seen. When travelling across the island, always keep a lookout for deer which are often seen on the moor. The restored blackhouse village at Gearrannan is a 30 minute walk along the village road. There are extensive walking trails throughout the islands. On Sundays, the gentle pace of island life is even more relaxed as the Sabbath is observed and most businesses are closed. No one hangs out washing or works outside on the croft. This gives the perfect opportunity to visit some of the spectacular island beaches. Those closest are at Dalbeg or Dalmore, both a 10 minute drive from the house. For one of the most spectacular beaches in the world, take a day trip and travel south to Luskentyre on Harris. If going on a Sunday, be sure to take a picnic.
  • Staying in Pamelas croft was an absolute joy. Its close to many attractions and its equipped with all the stuff you need to chill out after an active day. The kitchen specificly is a true paradise. Highly recommended!

    Benno2019-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • Carloway Croft offers all the amenities one could need. The lovely kitchen is up-to-date and spacious enough for a family of six. We enjoyed the comfortable living area and attractions in the nearby villages.

    Suzanne2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • Pamela's house is very well equipped, you will find loads of great local information, and are very well positioned to go to the wonderful beaches nearby, and the Callanish stones.

Very comfortable renovated croft house using renewable energy. Quiet location on west coast of Lewis. Safe local beach. Min 3 night stay. Sleeps 5/6 (ground floor double bedroom with en suite bathroom, 2 twin rooms upstairs one with a shorter size bed for a child). Excellent base for bird-watching, cycling, dark skies, free trout fishing, historic sites, Harris Tweed weavers. Perfect for writing retreats, digital detox (no TV, no wifi), chilling out. Buses to Stornoway and Callanish.
Quiet place in a rural community but not remote because there are daily flights and ferries to/from the mainland, Skye and North Uist. Many local people speak Scottish Gaelic and guests might be lucky to visit when there is a local musical event. It is often windy, but that is great for drying your clothes and keeping the midges away. The air is very clear, so bring sunhats, and sun protection cream for those sunny days.
Rural area with many Gaelic speakers. Local sandy beach within ten minutes walk.
  • A beautiful home - so warm and clean. It had everything we needed and more. Views from the dining room were from every direction. Plenty of space to relax in. The location was amazing, not that far from Stornoway but so close to the sights on the west coast and easy to reach Tarbert. Local beach was very nice too.

  • An amazing property and an excellent host. I would absolutely and thoroughly recommend The House of the Rowan Tree as a base for exploring Lewis and Harris. My family and I loved our stay and are already planning a return visit.

    Mark2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • We are a family of four with two sons aged 4.5 and nearly 7 and we had a brilliant 5 nights at Jennifer’s beautiful place in South Shawbost. It is a bright, spacious place with a fantastic sunroom, which we spent our spare time in. Jennifer is so lovely to chat to and we were given a very warm welcome. She has an air of being there if we need her without being imposing at all. The bus to and from Stornoway stops right outside the house which is ideal if you don’t have a car. We did have ours and we’re 5 mins from Dal Beag, and 10 mins from Dal Mor, the most gorgeous white sandy beaches, perfect to watch the spectacular sunsets. We were there for Heb Celt, which was so easily accessible from here by car, but even without a car as I don’t suppose a taxi would be too much. Don’t hesitate to book, you won’t regret it. We will definitely be back!

    Heather2019-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • What to say ? Quiet, complete change of scenery, all in a comfortable and family home ... what more can you ask ?? Excellent location: 15 minutes by car from Callanish (raised stones), 45 minutes from the beautiful Uig beach, 30 minutes from Butt of Lewis or 30 minutes from Stornoway, the capital! It is the ideal place to discover the treasures of the island. Located in a small village, Jennifer's home is in the middle of pastures, where one can see the lambs running all day long. In clear weather, you can even see the sea from the dining room window! The house itself is excellent. Do not look for an ultra modern decor, this house is completely family and that's what makes you feel good. The equipped kitchen is top. And our favorite is the room behind the kitchen, which serves as a dining room. This room is surrounded by windows and the view is breathtaking! The small wicker chairs that are there welcomed us every night for a moment of reading. But more than all this brings together, it is the kindness of Jennifer who will leave us a particular memory. In the care of her guests, she is available and full of good advice. Thanks to her for this unique stay on Lewis.

    Justine2019-05-28T00:00:00Z
  • Jennifer was a great host - very easy to communicate with prior to our visit and a lovely woman to chat to when we did meet. The house is BIG and very well-appointed. Lots of space, with a great kitchen and sunroom beside it for sitting in and whiling away the hours. Good location for visiting all of the west Lewis sights (Callanish stones, Carloway broch etc). The house has been refurbished with the environment in mind, so it uses renewable energy 😁 We had a lovely time - thanks Jennifer!

    Karin2019-05-21T00:00:00Z
  • The house is recently modernised, well equipped and very comfortable. The only downside was that the downstairs bedroom was very cold and we'd been told not to adjust the heating which didn't come on. There is a halogen heater and a woodburning stove provided which we used. Jennifer was very welcoming and informative.

A comfortable self contained apartment on the ground floor of our croft house with spectacular views across the sea to the island of Great Bernera and beyond, to the hills of Harris and Uig. Ceann Bodaich is a good base from which to explore the the moors, hills and lochs of this island, and the nearby archaeological sites.
Ceann Bodaich is suitable for couples of any age. The apartment, with it's own front door, has underfloor heating and a peat burning stove. You will have your own book lined sitting room, double bedroom, shower room and kitchen. If it is not too warm the stove will be lit and ready for you when you arrive. You can use our super fast broadband. The kitchen is fully equipped with electric cooker and microwave, fridge and freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. (We have a laundry room in the main house if it is too wet or windy to hang your washing outside.)
A short walk will take you to the shore where there are tidal lagoons, rocky and sandy beaches and coastal wildlife. We have otters, seals, and occasionally whales and dolphins in our seas. There are buzzards and ravens nesting nearby and Golden and Sea Eagles are often to be seen in the skies above us. At the other end of the croft you will find the village loch with it’s own islands and wildlife; there are waterfowl and herons to watch and in the Autumn the swans arrive. Tolsta Chaolais is is often called the prettiest village in Lewis and there are many delightful routes to explore on foot. The landscape is characterised by beautiful outcrops of rock amid the wild flowers and rushing streams. The Doune Braes Hotel is a mile and a half away by village road and moorland track and serves food all year. We are less than 5 miles from the Calanais Standing Stones, the Broch at Dun Carloway and the Garenin Blackhouse village. Half an hour’s drive from Stornoway and an hour from the hills of Harris, the magnificent beaches of Uig, and the Butt of Lewis. If you give us some notice we can usually arrange a boat mooring for you
  • Ali was a superb host who made me feel very welcome immediately. Thank you for showing me how to build a fire! Extra life skill I can add to my knowledge 😄

    Jillian2019-10-17T00:00:00Z

  • It’s a very quiet, very cosy and friendly place. The living room is just great, we enjoyed the stove with the peat fire on a cold evening. The breakfast is outstanding, it’s more a giant gourmet meal with local products than a breakfast! Also we enjoyed the possibility to buy the products of the crofting for creating our own meals (eggs, selfmade bread, selfmade jams). The area is just loveley and a lots of animals are living here. Alison and her husband are loveley, helpful people. We felt like home here. Thank you for everything!

    Marianne2019-09-28T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Ali and Sandy’s apartment was such a highlight of our trip to the Outer Hebrides. The apartment is beautiful with views out over the rolling countryside and the sea. It has everything you need for a truly wonderful stay - the bed is super comfy and the kitchen has everything you need to cook yourself. Their hospitality was wonderful and we were lucky enough to meet some of the other local residents over drinks and croft produce on our last night. The horses and collies are an added highlight - we loved meeting them. Thank you for a very special stay.

    Claire2019-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • Alison's place was perfect for our stay. Great hospitality with a thorough introduction to all of the facilities and local area as well as a tray of tea and yummy cake! Very quiet and secluded. We loved meeting the dogs, too.

Our family run cottage has been recently redecorated. We welcome families, groups of friends, pets etc. Ideal location from which to explore the islands. The cottage is approximately a 30 minute drive from the main town of Stornoway. Regular public transport is available. There are many popular landmarks and beautiful beaches local to the area along with scenic walks and cycling routes. Salmon fishing is also popular here. Ample private parking. Shed for bike storage.
The cottage has an open fire. We supply a starter pack of coal, kindling etc. We also supply a starter pack of essentials including tea, coffee, milk, bread, toilet roll etc. There is a shower over the bath and we provide towels. We have a website at www.lewis-self-catering.co.uk
The village in which the cottage is located is very quiet. Gaelic is widely spoken in the area as well as English. There is a hotel/bar approximately 5 minutes from the cottage by car. Local Harris Tweed weavers provide demonstrations of the loom in operation and the cottage provides a great base for exploring the islands of Lewis and Harris. There is a Guest pack available in the cottage providing info about things to see and do, eating out and supermarket opening hours and locations.

  • A great place to stay and base your trips around Lewis. Norman’s place has all the modern features. Comfortable, warm and clean. There were only two of us on this trip but it is setup for a family. I would stay again for a longer time for sure. Chris

  • A snug place at a nice and quiet location with sheep in the 'back yard'. The house itself might be in need of some modernisation (except the nicely equipped kitchen), but everything we needed during our stay was there and we had a great time. Norman has been a wonderful host, very helpful and kind.

    Nienke2019-09-28T00:00:00Z
  • This is excellent value for money. Clean modern chic it is not but homely warm and comfy it is! Perfect for the outer isles.... Thank you Norman for a lovely stay.

  • Norman's place is in a fantastic location and absolutely beautiful setting. The house is spacious and the kitchen has all the amenities you need. It was the perfect, cosy spot to come back to after spending the days walking. Would definitely recommend.

Lovely new modern cottage in rural crofting community west coast of the Isle of Lewis, Scotland, UK. It is situated in a quiet neighbourhood. The gaelic language is spoken in the village. There is a Harris Tweed mill in the village. There are lots of lovely sandy beaches near the cottage, one within a 10 to 15 minute walk depending on your ability. Other lovely beaches within a short driving distance from cottage.
The cottage has open plan sitting area, kitchen and small hall with a high ceiling giving it a spacious appearance, nice fitted shower room and bedroom with double bed with fitted mirrored wardrobe.
Tigh na Beart is in a coastal, rural, crofting community in a quiet neighbourhood. Plenty to see and do all year round.......coastal walks, fishing, bird watching, walking to name but a few. Harris tweed is woven in the village and there are 2 Harris tweed mills a short drive away. A demonstration on Harris tweed weaving may be seen at the mills but guests should make their own enquiry for this.
  • The saying: "Small but beautiful" has an effect here. The cottage is practically laid out, has everything you need for a holiday and is centrally located with beautiful views of the sea.

    Lydia2019-07-09T00:00:00Z
  • Joeys cottage is a converted shepherds hut and has been kitted our to a very high standard. It is absolutely perfect for two people, very comfortable with everything you could possibly need or want to hand. Joey has thought of everything and you will not be disappointed. There is a beach within about a 10 minute walk plus a coastal walk right on the doorstep. You are about half an hours drive from Stornaway for any supermarket shopping but there are lots of well stocked local shops nearer to hand which also tend to have petrol pumps too. Joey has lots of literature in the house re things to do and see but you will see lots of brown signs along the road indicating places of interest to visit.

    Helen2019-06-11T00:00:00Z
  • Joey’s cottage, the old weaving shed, is a small, convenient, self-contained wee house. It has everything you would need for a comfortable holiday, with easy access to good walking, a short drive to Stornoway and a number of interesting galleries. Shawbost is on the boundary between the moors of North Lewis and the Hill and mountain country of South Lewis and Harris. Ideally sited, a great spot!

    David2019-05-26T00:00:00Z
  • Tigh na Beart is a small, yet clean and modern holiday cottage. From the shower-room, kitchenette, wood-burner, to the ample storage, the host had obviously given some thought to the layout making the most of the available space whilst creating a very liveable and well-appointed accommodation. The location turned out to be a stand-out feature for us. We weren't sure what to expect as, never having been to Lewis before, it looked on the map as if it might be a bit remote, but it turned out to be just right for us. Finding that the beautiful beach was only a short walk away was the first surprise. Then the rugged beauty of the cliff-top coastal walk captivated us – we spent three days walking there. We took several excursions by car up and down the west coast from Ness to Dailbeg, Callanish and as far as Uig, but would have been happy walking out the door every day and leaving the car behind. I even caught a wee trout in the loch late one evening! The neighbours Ian and Billy were friendly and helpful, and we made a couple of visits to Ian's weaving shed across the road where he made us feel very welcome with his entertaining stories of weaving and island life.

  • Lovely self catering accommodation close to a sandy bay . Perfect

    Russell2018-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect for a couple. Not too big but very thoughtfully equiped and cozy.

    Barbara2018-06-26T00:00:00Z
  • A superb little house...woke every morning to the sounds of skylarks singing...nice and cosy with very good bathroom and kitchen. The cliff scenery nearby is stunning, every bit as good as the west of Ireland and Lewis's unsung wonder. The nearby beach is quiet and beautiful..and for any trout fishermen, loch raoinebhal is free for all and only a mile away. All in all, perfect for our honeymoon, many thanks.

  • Kabuis is a perfect home from home on an historic family croft in the wonderful Outer Hebrides. We received such a warm welcome from Rhoda,as well as numerous delicious treats and were truly sorry to have to leave at the end of the holiday. The chalet is cosy, well equipped, and spotless in a totally peaceful location close to a lovely beach and many interesting historic sights. For us the profound sense of peace and solitude was a delight, the sky at night blazed with stars and the wildlife is abundant and fascinating. Rhoda and Neil (and Rusty)could not have been better hosts, they were so kind and generous, nothing was too much trouble and we can’t wait to go back, but for longer next time, it was a truly magical holiday.

  • Kabius cottage is a place to make special memorable moments for its visitors. A very warm welcome awaits anyone staying with cake, fruit and smoked salmon. The cottage is well appointed with all that any guests might need. It is a good base for visiting the whole of Lewis being half way down the West Coast of the Island. The local bay is and old village are well worth spending time to visit and only a few minutes walk away. • This cottage is a delight, much bigger than it looks with amble space, and the most well equipped kitchen I have seen! Kids (aged 9 and 11) loved this cottage, the beach just down the lane is stunning. Sheep, rabbits, eagles and long horn Highland Cattle in the fields and hills around. I particularly enjoyed the books available to read, especially Dalmore, Tales of a Lewis village (D J Maclennan), which gives a fabulous insight into Dalmore's crofting past! Thanks also for the basket of peat for the fire...first for me! Fabulous vacation!

This cosy 4 bedroom traditional Hebridean house is full of character and has been extensively refurbished. This self catering property is available for bookings all year round. My place is close to the beach, family-friendly activities, transport links and is good for couples, families (with kids), big groups, and furry friends (pets).
The house has been fully refurbished for Summer 2016 with a new kitchen, lounge, four bedrooms and three bathrooms. Please be aware that the front of the house has unfenced access to the shore. Therefore, young children should not be left unattended in this area.

  • Lovely cottage in a fantastic location. Perfect for getting away from it all and relaxing. The cottage has loads of space and was even too warm sometimes. The homemade shortbread in the welcome pack was worth the long journey on it's own. The neighbourhood seal appeared a few times to mock us when we were attempting to fish out the front which was great. Highly recommend for a relaxing holiday.

  • A beautiful cottage in a stunning location, with fantastic views from the house and garden. A perfect place if you want a quiet holiday far from the madding crowd. Close to beautiful Bosta beach, which was very quiet; with never more than a few people on the beach at any time when we were there. Also close to little Bernea island with a selection of gorgeous beaches to swim on. Hosting was perfect: met us on arrival, very welcoming: and available by phone if we needed to get in touch. Loved the place and the cottage and would hope to go return for another visit at some stage.

    Vivienne2018-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • This is a beautiful old cottage that is fully modernized, bright and open throughout. After being met by our host, we were given a tour and given information on local sights and activities. There was a welcome basket full of treats and homemade shortbread from our hosts. One of our party has trouble with stairs so it was perfent that there was one bedroom and shower on the main level. My siblings and I had a wonderful week. Bosta beach is beautiful, we went two nights just to watch the sunset. This was great cottage in a perfect location with very gracious and accommodating hosts. We hope to be lucky enough to return for another visit.

  • Catriona's place was very well kept and much more spacious than we anticipated. The quaint black house village was very close and the house in a beautiful and remote location. We really looked forward to our evenings at the fireside.

  • Catriona's house is very well equipped with everything you can think of to hand. We enjoyed our stay and found it to be a great base for exploring Lewis. Although we didn't meet Catriona, we found all the information she provided before our trip very helpful.

  • This is a great location for exploring Lewis, especially the beautiful west coast of Lochs and Uig. The house is very comfortable and well equipped, with a good selection of books providing historic and other useful information. A ten minute stroll from the house lies Gearranan Blackhouse Village and a beautiful little cove from where you can walk for miles along the coastal path. If you love birdwatching, we had wonderful views of eagles, red and black-throated divers, golden plovers, great skuas, fulmars, kittiwakes....just a stone's throw from the house.... Catriona provided plenty of information prior to our stay to make arrival and departure easy. Thank you Catriona!

  • An all-too-brief stay in a wonderful part of Lewis. The Ard was very comfortable and cosy. It has beautiful views to the west and is very quiet. There is a ramp from the drive to get to the front door if unable to climb the three or four steps.

Spacious, bright welcoming home from home located in the stunning west coast of the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. The croft house comes complete with linen and towels fully equipped for you to enjoy your holiday and explore the wider natural and historic wonders of Lewis & Harris.
Feels very much like a family home with an interesting library of books and music with sunsets to die for. There is an extensive garden and access to the wider outdoor areas near the croft. You may even catch glimpses of the Northern Lights if you get lucky. The resident weaver produces Harris Tweed in the old croft house beside Taigh Granaidh and happy to share his passion for this fabulous cloth.
The house is in the village of Breasclete, about 3 miles from Callanish Standing Stones. There is a Visitor Centre near the stones which has a gift shop and cafe. The nearest hotel is 3 miles in the other direction at Doune, Carloway where you can also visit an ancient stone broch. The west side of Lewis is rich with historical sites. There are numerous freshwater lochs for fishing for brown trout and there are a couple of fishing estates nearby where you buy permits to fish for salmon and sea trout. We love taking a walk out the back of the house where you can see some great views of the hills and lochs. You an also take a short walk down to the seashore where there is a rocky beach where at low tide you can explore the rockpools or go for a swim.
  • Taigh Granaidh is a very lovely cottage set on a hill overlooking a sea loch and at night in good weather you can have some fabulous sun sets. A large cottage which is nice and quiet with large rooms and a well fitted kitchen. Next door is a weaving shed where Kenny is very pleased to show round the working Loom definitely worth a visit.

  • Caroline and Kenny's house is an ideal place to spend a relaxing time on Lewis and Harris. It has everything you need and is spacious, very clean and warm. It's a real bonus to have Kenny demonstrate how Harris tweed is made and have his tips for trips. I would highly recommend it to everyone.

  • A lovely place to stay - all you could need and more. Perfect location for exploring Lewis and Harris. Caroline and Kenny are wonderful hosts.

    Aimee2018-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely fantastic place and location to stay - central to the whole island(s) enabling you to visit places easily. House was really well appointed and very clean, spacious and toasty warm and welcoming. Caroline and Kenny were great hosts and made us feel very welcome. Welcome packet of homemade pancakes and fresh hen eggs was a lovely touch. We'd definitely return. Great value for money.

  • Caroline's house is beautiful and big!! It was just my husband and I, but it was great to have space to move around and not have to share a bathroom! We enjoyed watching the sunset from the large living room window overlooking the bay - while listening to selections from Caroline's great music collection. In terms of the house's amenities - well, there is everything; whatever you need, it's there! The location is great in terms of visiting the standing stones, for taking hikes along the cliffs and beach, an easy drive Stornaway for groceries and Tarbert for sightseeing. We spent a day hiking the lovely beaches in Harris and another day hiking the beach just up the road (I forget the name). I really appreciate Kenny (Caroline's husband) taking the time explaining his weaving to us. He is an independent weaver for Harris tweed and his weaving studio is located next to the house. It was very inspiring and we are glad for the great memories!

  • Staying in Granny's House was a pure pleasure. We arrived late on the Saturday after a long journey and the welcome pack was most appreciated. Caroline and Kenny met us on the Sunday morning to make sure we had everything we needed and gave advice on places to visit. Kenny weaves next door to the cottage so is always on hand with information and a smile. Bottom line is that you will have to go a long way to beat this cottage on the Isle of Lewis. Thank you Caroline and Kenny.

    Chris2017-05-13T00:00:00Z
  • Caroline's house was in a perfect location on the island, quiet, clean and very homely with all the modern conveniences making our trip stress free and comfortable. Her welcoming gifts and Kenny's great weaving demonstrations made us feel extremely welcome. Couldn't recommend it more.
