“We booked Silver Oak Place on a whim, just based on the general location and some photographs. The idea was to go some place which would be completely away from all civilisation and spend a few days. We also had the urge to explore the region around Pithoragarh, so this seemed like an ideal place to stay. Needless to say, it fulfilled all our expectations! Silver Oak Place is located a half-hour to forty minute drive beyond the main town, which makes it's location very good. Perched high up on a hill side, the place commands splendid views of the Himalayas, spread out like a widescreen TV right in front. One can spend a whole day sitting out on the porch and watching the amazing show of nature unfold right in front. The dance of the sun and shadows on the mountains, the melodies of the wind flowing through the trees and the drama of clouds in the sky; all of which never ceases to enthral and will help you connect back to nature (and your own soul). There is some fauna too. One can spot birds of all kinds, as well as foxes and other small animals. Being the last house on the road, it is surrounded by thick forests on the higher side. Hospitality is taken care of by Kamal and his lovely wife Shobha, who live in the old house adjoining Silver Oak Place. While Kamal looks after your day-to-day needs, Shobha makes some amazingly tasty but simple dishes that you can ever have. Mostly from local ingredients, the food is healthy, wholesome and easy on the stomach. If need be, they can also make special dishes. It would be good if Kamal can be informed of your food preferences as soon as you arrive, so that he can provision for the same in one go. Remember, this is a remote location and nothing is available in the immediate vicinity; Kamal needs to trudge at least half an hour one-way to get even the most basic things. The cottage is tastefully designed, with a loft area with two beds and a lower area with two more. A group of four can easily stay here. The bathroom is spacious and is well equipped. If you are particular about toiletries, please bring your own as nothing is available here (and it is not a hotel anyway). Fresh towels and linen is provided, so no issues there. A water filter is available for filtered water, though I suspect the natural water there is good enough! Please be aware that since this is a remote location, please don't be surprised if you find a few insects in the room or outside. That's nature! One can go on long walks into the forest or simply sit around the front porch and enjoy nature's act play out before you. One can also climb up to a small meadow on the hillock above and spend a whole day lazing around. Remember to carry a dhurrie or mat. Local goatherds with their flock will pass you by and you can even end up playing with the little goats (we did that!). To sum-up, Silver Oak Place is the perfect vacation home one can think of, far away from everything that you may want to get away from. It is a perfect spot to relax, unwind, rejuvenate and come back refreshed. We have decided to go back there for a longer stay, whenever time permits. It will be great to spend time there again!”
This place is situated in far east district Champawat in Uttrakhand, bordering Nepal, in the midst of dense forest of Cedar, Rhododendron, Plums, Pear, Peach, Bay Berries etc.
“A life-changing experience. I am a solo traveler always looking for new experiences I can take home with me. The one at Forest First has been life changing for me. About the property: It's more than a homestay. Or a guesthouse. It felt like a home. And I am not at all exaggerating. Dinesh ji and his hospitality is something else only. It's a lavish house with a private room on the ground floor and a terrace room on first floor. The food cooked here is deliciously tasty and ridiculously cheap. There are several trails you can go on. All the ingredients are grown in his small farm. Be it lemon, mustard, corrionder. Dinesh ji loves cooking and will surprise you with his dishes every day. He loves experimenting them too. Watching him cook is a delight. And the love he pours in the food can be experienced by the way it tastes. I can talk on and on about the food and the place. But this review is not about that. It's more about what Dinesh ji is trying to do in this small humble village. He's trying to build a community of his own. A community that gives back to the society. A community that believes in making a difference. On my first day here, I met his friend Reggie who is staying with Dinesh ji for the past one month and taking time out to teach the local school kids here. Dinesh ji himself is involved when it comes to educating and empowering these kids. In fact, Reggie was soon going to visit Pilibhit forest and spend some time with the local tribes there to teach in the schools that are facing a tough time finding quality teachers. Dinesh ji is always on the lookout of people from various fields who don't mind spending some time in the woods and teaching kids as the kids mean a lot to him. It's been a life changing experience for me because I come from a city that never sleeps. I have been slogging for almost a decade now and haven't done anything that actually makes a difference. We all travel and the sole purpose of these travels is to have experiences that will move us. Well Dinesh ji will do just that. I am coming back to Forest First again. This time on a holiday with a purpose to spend more time with these kids. Inspire them in ways a school can't and help them lead a better lifestyle. After spending time and having endless conversations with Dinesh ji about how the small villages are suffering and how he's making a small difference to a small number of people, I have decided to dedicate some time from my life to make a difference and give back to the society and nature that has given us so much.”
The wooden house Charming hillside homestay featuring 2 bedrooms, 1 baths, a functional kitchen and nice balcony. It's a wonderful place for photography, off road biking, cycling, jeep safari , treacking sightseeing or anyone looking to relax after a day exploring. The best part though, would be its location which is easily accessible to popular hotspots of the region. Total distance from Delhi is 480km. Nearest airport - Pantnagar & Nainisaini Railway-station - Kathgodam.
