All about Martin Lake

Tucked away in central Alabama, Lake Martin’s rugged shores are framed by over 750 miles of untouched forests and rocky cliffs. This artificial lake was once the country’s largest, created when the Martin Dam was constructed on the Tallapoosa River in the 1920s. Climb up to Chimney Rock, a cliff that rises high into the sky, and feel the rush as you take in sweeping views of the sparkling water far down below. Rental boats and kayaks galore sail the tranquil waters, and seasonal Alabama soul food is the perfect way to refuel once you’re back on dry land. Locals from the nearby cities of Birmingham, Montgomery, and Atlanta head here for the area’s many water-based activities, along with laid-back golfing, hiking along local woodland trails, and low-key marina dinners. More adventurous visitors will enjoy high-octane ziplining and waterskiing, while natural sand beaches beckon for relaxed days soaking up the sun.
