“BOOK PAPAYA HOMESTAY NOW! It will be the best decision and part of your Cambodia adventure. Tola's family is absolutely amazing with hospitality and warmth that I have yet to experience in my many travels abroad. Tola's sister-in-law Navy is your main point of contact during your stay. She is an INCREDIBLE cook (literally every dish made my mouth drool) and she will even teach you how to cook if you're interested. The homestay also has an extremely kind driver Sarath, who is one of the most gentle and loving people I have met. He is so generous with his time and he offers incredible insight into changing Cambodian society. He knows all the routes to visit the temples nearby, and will eagerly take you at any time of the day, whether its sunrise or midday. He taught me "by staying local, the money you spend here stays here. The money we make in Papaya is used to fuel local markets, and by paying one person, you're actually supporting 10-15 people." Papaya homestay is a world class homestay. You will not feel like a foreigner, but rather like you are visiting your friends. Which brings me to my next point. Beyond just an incredible stay, it is extremely important for us to consider the ethics of how our travels and tourism affects the communities we visit. Cambodia is rapidly changing, with many development projects driven by foreign capital. Though tourism is increasing, it is destabilizing local communities that cannot compete with these foreign-backed places. This is why it's crucial to stay local, like with Papaya. The money spent here STAYS in Cambodia, which means the difference of having food on the table or not for these families. I implore you to stay at Papaya, you will not regret it! Stay here please!”
Beautifully designed, pleasant, private, and relaxed villa in central Siem Reap - only a 3 minute tuk tuk ride or 10 min walk to Pub Street (Old Market Area). Our place has its own pool and beautiful courtyard that will keep you entertained during your stay. The villa features a king-sized hotel quality bed and linen that will ensure you get a great nights rest after long days exploring all that Siem Reap has to offer. The villa has a huge en-suite bathroom with rain shower.
“This is a brilliant property, just far enough from the main road to make it very quiet, but near enough so that getting a Tuk Tuk into town is easy. The pool is an excellent asset. It’s a bit too small for swimming but we took a couple of inflatable beds to float around on while sunbathing. There is air conditioning which is very effective and a couple of ceiling fans so it is very comfortable to sit and sleep in. The kitchen has all of the cooking facilities, cutlery and crockery you need should you want to eat in, and has a good sized fridge freezer. There is also a good washing machine in one of the outbuildings which the villa has exclusive use of so washing and drying clothes is very easy. The bed is large and very comfortable with a small settee overlooking the pool area. There is a large flat screen TV and although it doesn’t have satellite channels it does have ChromeCast so you can stream Netflix etc. should you want to watch TV. There is also a good Sonos speaker which you can plug a phone into to listen to music, or connect into if you have the Sonos app, and the villa has good WiFi. The villa is about a 5 minute Tuk Tuk ride into the centre and there is a never ending supply of Tuk Tuks at the bottom of the road (about a one minute walk from the villa). Vichay met us at the property when we arrived from the airport and was very friendly and helpful. We arranged with him before we went out for his brother, Thy (pronounced Tee), to pick us up by Tuk Tuk from the airport. This is a great way to travel to the villa as you get an introduction to the chaotic roads in Siem Reap and also the opportunity to see some of the town as you travel in. Thy is also available for trips out and we went out with him about 6 or 7 times. His rates are very reasonable and he is a brilliant and entertaining guide so I would definitely recommend you use him for sightseeing. Siem Reap is a bustling town with loads of bars and restaurants. Pub Street is the main entertainment area and even though it has its fair share of noisy bars there are numerous other places to eat and, in February 2020, a meal for two with drinks was about $20. This is in the main tourist area so move away from there and the prices get even cheaper. We have had a great holiday and the villa played a major part in that together with the hosts who were very quick to respond to messages before we went out and equally so when we were in the villa. So my thanks to Billy, Vichay and Thy for making the experience so enjoyable. I cannot recommend this villa, and the hosts, highly enough and two weeks in Siem Reap and the surrounding areas just flew by. I would love to go back again.”
