Kai House is set on the Idyllic Island of Kiwayu within the Kiunga Marine Reserve. Kiwayu Island is part of the Lamu Archipelago. Kai House began when I worked at Mikes Camp for many years and together with the island community we built this house traditional style out of palm fronds and coconut leaves mangroves and driftwood. Kinooni* House is one of the most ancient houses on Historic Lamu Island. Once the home of the Governor of Lamu, who was then the emissary to the Sultan of Zanzibar at the end of the 18th century, it has now been carefully restored with traditional Swahili design and craftsmanship to bring back the elegance, simplicity, and grandeur of the original mansion. * Kinooni means “the place of the sharpening stone” so Nyumba ya Kinooni means : “ the house of where the sharpening stone is”.

The rooftop terrace features a thatched roof, offering shade and relaxation. Traditional wooden furniture, including a table and chairs, is arranged around a green area rug. Lanterns provide soft lighting, while a hammock invites lounging. Lush greenery is visible in the background.

The house is located in 2nd line to the seafront , overlooking the channel between Lamu and Manda Island and is within the UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. Easy to reach restaurants, shops, the market, boats and beaches. The interiors are roomy and beautifully-finished, and furnished with attractive, newly-built traditional furniture including chairs, tables, sofas, four-poster beds, planters chairs.
