Tips from locals
Charlton House is a Jacobean building with a tea room and walled gardens. A short walk.
Friday lunchtimes (1pm) you might well find a recital by very gifted young musicians from one of the main London schools of music. World class and free.
Charlton House illustrates a little-represented phase in the evolution of the English country house, linking the sprawling style of the Tudor age with the compact geometry associated with Inigo Jones. The original oak staircase remains, as do many fireplaces and plasterwork ceilings.
They also have a cafe but its more about the grounds and the Jacobean Manor. I love to have a run around the perimeter.
