The Monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena in Catania, Sicily is a former Benedictine monastery, located in Piazza Dante in the city of Catania. After the Mafra, this abbey is the second largest Benedictine monastery in Europe. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (1 min walking)
This monastery is a must-see! Guided tours every hour, every day from 9am to 5pm (11am to 6pm in August). If you don't speak Italian, go during weekends and ask for a guided tour in your language!
Benedictine Monastery is one of the largest monastic complexes in Europe (every day 9: 00-17: 00; full admission € 8.00, reduced € 6.00). Today it hosts the Department of Human Sciences of the University of Catania but part of the monastery is still open to be visited. We recommend that you to visit "Officine Culturali" website for any candlelit night tours (VERY SUGGESTIVE!)
