The Cradle of Humankind is a UNESCO World Heritage Site just outside Joburg and definitely worth a day trip if you have the time; it's an easy one hour drive. Check out the Maropeng website, it's the official visitor centre for both the Cradle of Humankind and the Sterkfontein Caves - our ancestors have lived in this area for over three million years.
