The square owes its name to the central Renaissance fountain, whose main decorative element is the figure of a colt (potro, in Spanish). lt was traditionally a venue for the purchase and sale of livestock and handicrafts, as demonstrated by the famous inn of the same name (Pousada del Potro). Today, on one side, stand the Fine Arts Museum (formerly Charity Hospital) and the Julio Romero de Torres Museum.
