The garden was renamed the National Garden in 1927 during the period of the regency republic. It is open to the public from sunrise to sunset. The main entrance to the park is from the Avenue, which was renamed Amalia in her honor, since she envisioned the creation of the garden. There are six other entrances to the garden: one from Vassilissis Sofias Street, three from Herodou Attiko Street (two are now closed by police order)[1] and two from the Zappeion Park area. In the garden there are ponds with ducks, a small zoo, a cafeteria, the children's library and a playground. Henry Miller wrote of the National Garden in 1939, "The park remains in my memory as no other park I have visited in my life. The quintessence of a park is like looking at a painting or dreaming of being in a place one can never go."

The National Garden which used to be the ‘Royal Garden’ is just next to the Greek Parliament at Syntagma square (which also used to be the Royal Palace). With a size of 38 acres, it’s one of the largest green spaces in the center of the city. Zappeion Hall which is adjacent to the National Garden, is a conference and exhibition hall which opened in 1888. To this day it is often used for state and private meetings and ceremonies.

The National Garden of Athens, located behind the Parliament and Syntagma Square, is a green oasis in the heart of the city of over 160.000 square meters adorned with over 500 types of plants and trees from all over the world. The gardens were designed in 1839 by order of Queen Amalia of the Greeks, but were not open to the public until 1923, when they were renamed “National Garden”. The designer of the gardens, Friedrich Schimdt, traveled all over the world in search of the most beautiful, exotic and unique flora. This task was also granted to the Hellenic Navy. The park is a picturesque green lung filled with flowers, shrubs, ancient trees and green meadows where to relax during the warm summer days. The National Garden’s most famous sights include a small pond, which is home to numerous water birds, a botanical garden, the remains of historical monuments and even a small zoo. The National Garden is a must, especially if you are traveling with small children, as it is packed with things to see and do.
