This homely wine bar is perhaps more intimate than its rambunctious neighbours, with a tip top and ever-rotating wine list and homemade tapas. It gets packed later on, so head here early to put your name down for a much-coveted table. Friendly service, low lighting and lovely acoustics – foodie heaven! The Madrid is a firm favourite (scrambled eggs with onion and morcilla, sprinkled with pine nuts and a zingy tomato sauce), as is their classic, lighter-than-air tortilla.

It's our favourite tapas place, it's small, and if it's busy when you arrive, it's well worth waiting a few minutes for a free table. If you decide to go, be sure to order the calamari, tuna tataki or oxtail. They also have an excellent selection of wines.
Casa Lucas is on the usual "tapas craw" circuit, on Calle Cava Baja in Madrid. It is a step above usual tapas, with a creative flair. Strongly recommend making reservations so you can have a sit down meal. While the tapas are great, don't overlook the "raciones" - the entrees. Known for its oxtail (rabo de toro) stew made with prunes and pistachios on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes. They have a wonderful wine selection as well - reasonably priced.
