The cracked concrete is gone and was replaced with granite pavement and the landscape received a trendy makeover. It is more spacious, the details are elegantly simple, and the various pieces of contemporary architecture are not only in perfect harmony with the Parliament, but also add to the overall picture, giving it a modern twist, rather than taking away from it. The square, renamed in 1927 in honor of Lajos Kossuth was previously known by several names including; Országház tér ("Parliament Square") (1898–1927), Tömő tér or Stadt Schopper Platz in German ("Landfill Square")(1853–1898). This name recalls how the low-lying territory flanking the river, then outside the town of Pest, was filled with rubbish to raise the level of the ground. The first recorded name was Stadtischer Auswind Platz ("Unloading Square for the Ships") in 1820.

Thanks to its renovation in 2014, Kossuth Square has became one of Budapest's most spectacular parks. Now you can stroll on both sides of the Parliament and approach the building to admire the area.
