Political prison from 1934 to 1974, temporary lodging of Portuguese families from the ancient ultramarine colonies in 1974 and, since 1984, housing the Museu Municipal (City Museum). The Peniche Fortress is of particular importance because it is an important monument of a local and national landmark.

National Museum of Resistance and Freedom, located at the Fort of Peniche, is where political prisoners were held during the military dictatorship under Salazar. On April 25 1974 Salazar was overthrown by the Armed Forces Movement when the prisoners were finally freed.

Vital part of Peniche's history. Parts of the fortress are closed for renovation works, but the museum is still open.
