La Plaza de Santa Ana was built in the 19th century in central Madrid, and has since become one of the liveliest and most vibrant areas of the city. The square is filled with statues and monuments and surrounded by notable buildings like the Reina Victoria Hotel and the Teatro Espanol. However, the main attraction lies in the close proximity of scores of tapas bars, terrace cafés, pubs, restaurants, and Irish bars. La Plaza de Santa Ana is packed from early evening to the early morning on any given day—especially during the summer. It is also just a short walk away from the Puerto del Sol and the Plaza Mayor, so if you somehow manage to exhaust the area of awesome things to do (which we don't think is too likely), you'll have those as an option as well. Just don't count on needing them. SUGGESTED VENUES *Cerveceria Alemana: over 100 years old, Earnest Hemingway a regular here, and it is now often frequented by local artists and musicians *Teatro Espanol: originally built in 1583, and reconstructed in 1807 due to a fire, this theater has seen the performance of Spain's greatest production over the past 5 centuries. You can also take a tour. *Villarosa: flamenco dance hall turned trendy bar, the Villarosa was featured in Pedro Almodóvar's movie Tacones Lejanos.
