The Jesuit Monastery in Kalamitsia, Naxos: In a walking distance of 2 km from the villages of Melanes, in the region of Kalamitsia, there is a deserted Jesuit Monastery. This monastery, also known as the Jesuit Palace, is surrounded by low hills and olive trees. Constructed in 1673 by the Jesuit monk Roberto Sauze, this monastery was constructed on the ruins of an older Venetian mansion. Its marvelous design, elegance and luxurious style provoked the reactions of the residents that time as this luxury was opposed to the supposedly austere life of the monks. The first years, this monastery was used as a place of meditation for Jesuit monks, but in the next years, it passed into the hands of other Catholic orders. The building has two storeys and many ancillary wings. Although it is totally deserted today, it is kept in relatively good condition. Visitors can see the kitchen, the laundry rooms, stables, and cells. As the building has not been restored, special attention is required during the visit.

An impressive complex that was built as the summer resort of Jesuit monks in the 17th century is seen at Kalamitsia on Naxos, between the settlements of Melanes and Potamia. Construction of the complex was funded by the family of the head of the Jesuit order himself, Robert Saulger. Being a distinct mixture of western and local architecture, it includes many rooms, a chapel, auxiliary buildings such as dovecote, stable and olive mill, and a huge garden featuring terraces, bearing walls, cisterns and flights of stairs. Due to the luxury that characterized it, it was dubbed as “the Jesuit palace” and became the object of both admiration and criticism in its heyday, encountered in many reports of travelers and Papal emissaries. Το ανάκτορο των Ιησουιτών μοναχών βρίσκεται στην περιοχή Καλαμίτσια, απέχει 2 χλμ. από το χωριό Μέλανες και 7 χλμ. από τη Χώρα. Το 1673, ο Ιησουίτης μοναχός Ροβέρτο Σωζέ επέλεξε την καταπράσινη κοιλάδα των Καλαμιτσιών για να φτιάξει αυτό το λαμπρό οικοδόμημα. Οι εργασίες όπως δείχνουν οι ιστορικές και αρχιτεκτονικές μελέτες ξεκίνησαν την περίοδο 1679-1681 και ολοκληρώθηκαν το 1683. Το ανάκτορο χτίστηκε στα συντρίμμια ενός παλιότερου δουκάτου με χρήματα της οικογένειας του Ροβέρτο Σωζέ. Όταν ολοκληρώθηκε το χτίσιμό του, όπως αναφέρεται και σε βιβλία πολλών περιηγητών της εποχής, όλοι μιλούσαν για ένα κτίσμα μοναδικής αρχιτεκτονικής αλλά και εντυπωσιακής χλιδής, που όμως προκάλεσε τις έντονες αντιδράσεις των κατοίκων. Τα πρώτα χρόνια χρησιμοποιήθηκε ως εξοχική κατοικία και χώρος περισυλλογής των Ιησουιτών μοναχών. Στην πορεία του χρόνου πέρασε στην κυριότητα άλλων ταγμάτων των Καθολικών. Το ανάκτορο αποτελείται από ένα διώροφο κτίσμα καλυμμένο με θόλο και πτέρυγες χτισμένες περιμετρικά ενώ έχει πολλούς βοηθητικούς χώρους. Ακόμα και σήμερα διατηρείται σε πολύ καλή κατάσταση ο εντυπωσιακός περιστεριώνας. Στον περίγυρο μπορεί κανείς να δει τα μαγειρεία, τα πλυσταριά, τους στάβλους και τους ξενώνες. Δεν είναι λίγες οι ιστορίες που ακούγονται για το ανάκτορο των Καλαμιτσιών που αγγίζουν τα όρια του θρίλερ. Ο θρύλος λέει πως στο ανάκτορο υπήρχε για πολλά χρόνια κρυμμένος ένας μεγάλος θησαυρός, ο οποίος και βρέθηκε λίγο πριν το 2000. Άλλοι πάλι αναφέρονται σε νεράιδες και πνεύματα που κάνουν «αισθητή» την παρουσία τους τα βράδια…
