It’s in trendy Hackney, heated, and open all year until 9 pm—no wonder this 50m pool wonder is so popular. Queues can stretch round the block in summer. The pool itself is a glory in any season, but for me it has a special magic on floodlit winter nights, when steam rises off the water into the darkness. The pool is an outdoor swimming success story. It was saved from demolition by a dedicated 18-year campaign and reopened in 2006. There’s a café, with more reasonable prices than many others in the area, and a large sunbathing area too.

London Fields Lido is a heated 50m pool, a short walk away through London Fields. On a sunny day it is idyllic. On a winters day it is magical as steam rises from the warm water and at night you can swim looking up at the stars!
