Religious or not, it does not matter. Walking up the stairs to the church is a great way to take in some fresh air and get a great view over the harbour and fjord.

The Akureyrar church is the symbol of Akureyri. It is a Lutheran church and was disigned by architect Gudjon Samuelsson and concecrated in 1940. The central stained glass window above the altar formed a part of a set originatin gfrom England. The bas-reliefs on the nave balcony are by sculptor Asmundur Sveinsson and the baptismal font is a replica of a work by scultor Bertel Thorvaldsen. The church is located in the town center. There's a tradition in Iceland to walk up the steps to the curch and counting the many steps.

The Akureyri church set on a scenic place mid uphill is lit up year round and is an emblem of Akureyri in the minds of Icelanders. The steps up to the church are the venue of a yearly race and a fun exercise. The view from the church steps over town and Eyjafjordur fjord and vicinity is well worth the walk.
