A Showa-era tradition still thrives in Shinjuku. Taking its name from Maxim Gorky’s play about a flophouse, The Lower Depths, which was later adapted to film by Akira Kurosawa, Donzoko has been around for 53 years, and the inside as well as the outside don’t appear to have changed over time.
