The Palace opened on Sept. 6, 1928, in the great tradition of movie palaces of the time, boasting 2,000 seats, a domed ceiling, and Italian statuary. It had a full pipe organ, two grand pianos and a nine-piece pit orchestra. It booked vaudeville acts and motion pictures. Louis Armstrong played there. So did Jimmy Durante . Touring Broadway shows booked The Palace. The theater struggled the last few decades, and eventually was carved into a triplex. Slowly being resurrected, the Palace now hosts a variety of special screenings (the Academy Award shorts series is a favorite) and live performances; with the hope of being restored again to a 2000 seat showcase.
