The wetland at the mouth of the Lluta River is a protected natural area located on the northern coastal coast of the Arica and Parinacota region, Chile, in the final part of the Lluta River estuary, in the Atacama Desert, comprising the sector known as Las Machas beach.1 The area is ten kilometers from the center of the city of Arica and seven kilometers (in a straight line) from the landmark 1 on the border with Peru, in the vicinity of the Chacalluta border complex and the Chacalluta International Airport. It was declared a nature sanctuary by Decree No. 106 of April 6, 2009.2 and forms part of the hemispheric reserve network for shorebirds (WHSRN) as a regional reserve.3 The mouth of th
