Walk among old growth coast redwoods, cooling their roots in the fresh water of Redwood Creek and lifting their crowns to reach the sun and fog. Federally protected as a National Monument since 1908, this primeval forest is both refuge and laboratory, revealing our relationship with the living landscape. What will you discover in Muir Woods? Oh, and don't forget to buy your entry tickets, and parking pass before you go, and make sure to pull up the barcode receipt before you head there as they're isn't any internet service.

A splendid place to share a picnic or enjoy a meditative tour, Marin Art & Garden Center stands on land that was originally part of a Mexican land grant called "Rancho Punta de Quentin." James Ross, for whom the town of Ross was named, owned it. He settled here in 1857 on the west side of Corte Madera Creek, which was known as Ross Landing. In 1863, James Ross' daughter married George Worn and they built their home on a portion of the property which is now the Marin Art & Garden Center.

Sightseeing

Picturesque, historic, Western-style town with cool general store, little café and bakery. The town is named after the Marshalls, four brothers who set up a dairying industry there in the 1850s. Starting in the 1870s, Marshall was a stop on the North Pacific Coast Railroad connecting Cazadero to the Sausalito ferry. There is still some dairying in the area with Straus Family Creamery based there, but nowadays the town's major commerce is in oysters and clams, for which it is a center. It also acts as a center for tourists visiting Tomales Bay and the neighbouring Point Reyes Peninsula.

A Western-style 'Norman Rockwell' type hamlet with a village green in the middle with a little white wooden church at one end, and a little white wooden schoolhouse on the road leaving town. Home of "Rancho Nicasio" restaurant and music venue, named after the Mexican land grant of 56,807 acres granted to the Coast Miwok indigenous people in 1835, located in the present-day Marin County, California, a tract of land that stretched from San Geronimo to Tomales Bay. Today, Nicasio, California is at the heart of this location.

What a treat, it was like a trip back in time. From the historic ticket booth to the classic seating and décor, the theater provides a unique experience. We were pleasantly surprised that the first daily show is only five dollars and comes with a free small popcorn. Really! And we saw a new release. The snack bar (notice the retro reference) also has a full offering of food and drinks, including alcoholic beverages. I have to note that the seats are very comfortable and there is plenty of space between rows. We had a great time and it's great that a place like this still exists!

The Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco, California, is the oldest public Japanese garden in the United States, originally built as part of a 1894 World's Fair. Landscaped by Makoto Hagiwara, many of its attractions are still a part of the garden today, there have been changes throughout the history of the garden that have shaped it into what it is today, a complex of many paths, ponds and teahouse featuring plants and trees pruned and arranged in a Japanese style. Its 3 acres contain sculptures and structures influenced by Buddhist and Shinto religious beliefs, as well as many elements of water and rocks to create a calming landscape designed to slow people down.

Getting Around

In my experience, the easiest way to get here from the San Francisco Airport is to take the famous local "Marin AirPorter" (a coach that ferries air passengers back and forth), get off at their drop-off point at Larkspur Landing, then take a Taxi, Lyft or Uber the last 12 miles.

They bake bread daily. If you go to the deli to get a sandwich just know that the roast beef is just as freshe. On top of that they use fresh local produce and they don't take shortcuts. What you have here is some top notch deli behavior. You can't really get better, fresher or more local than that can you. The market has other good stuff going for it. A full beverage section, firewood, chips and crackers, a full produce isle. On to the good part, they have buffalo milk soft serve in both Vanilla and chocolate, the small is huge. Other good part, the weekend BBQ. They rock the BBQ until the sell out.
