Food Scene

Arguably the best restaurant in Ptuj, the 'Angler Inn' faces the river, with an enormous terrace, and the speciality here is – not surprisingly – fish, especially trout and pike-perch in their various modes of preparation. The mushroom soup served in a bread-loaf bowl is exceptional. There’s live Slovenian music some nights.

This very pleasant gostilna (inn-like restaurant) above a pub and near the foot of the road to the castle serves a lot of stick-to-the-ribs Slovenian specialties, such as štruklji (dumplings with herbs and cheese, €5) and ajdova kaša z jurčki (buckwheat groats with mushrooms, €7), as well as fish, steak and a preponderance of pork preparations.

The cosy 'Little Elephant', with an interesting marble fountain out front, serves what many think is the best pizza in Ptuj, along with some meatless dishes such as pasta, plus the ubiquitous range of grills. There's a terrace for the warmer months.

Best Pizza in this part!
If you need a rice or noodle fix or just a break from traditional Slovenian fare, try the 'Chinese Garden', Ptuj’s long-established Chinese restaurant, just opposite the footbridge over the Drava. It has a fair few vegetable dishes on its menu.

Sightseeing

Ptuj castle is an agglomeration of styles from the 14th to the 18th centuries, but is nonetheless a majestic sight, sitting high on the hill overlooking the red-roofed burger houses of Ptuj and the Drava River. It houses the Ptuj-Ormož Regional Museum but is equally worth the trip for the views of Ptuj and the Drava River. The shortest way to the castle is to follow narrow Grajska ulica, east of the Hotel Mitra, which leads to a covered wooden stairway and the castle’s Renaissance Peruzzi Portal (1570). As you enter the castle courtyard, look to the west at the red marble tombstone of Frederick IX, the last lord of Ptuj (died in 1438). In the former stables just past the ticket office is a

On the east side of Minoritski trg, with its 17th-century plague pillar, sits the massive Minorite monastery established in the 13th century. Because the Franciscan Minorites dedicated themselves to teaching, the order was not dissolved under the edict issued by Habsburg Emperor Joseph II in the late 18th century, and it has continued to function here for more than seven centuries. The arcaded baroque structure, which dates from the second half of the 17th century, contains a summer refectory on the 1st floor, with beautiful stucco work and a dozen ceiling paintings of St Peter (north side) and St Paul (south side). It also has a 5000-volume library of important manuscripts.

Funnel-shaped Slovenski trg is the centre of old Ptuj. In the middle is the 16th-century City Tower. Roman tombstones and sacrificial altars from Poetovio were incorporated into the walls in the 1830s – check the reliefs of Medusa’s head, dolphins, a lion and a man on horseback. In front of the tower stands the 5m-tall Orpheus Monument, a 2nd-century Roman tombstone with scenes from the Orpheus myth. Note the holes at the base: it was used as a pillory in the Middle Ages. On the northern side of the square are several interesting buildings, including the 16th-century Provost’s House, the baroque Old Town Hall and Ljutomer House, whose Mediterranean-style loge was built in 1553.
