A bit about Harrington….
Most importantly, it’s a brilliant place to watch the sunset… down at the harbour. On a clear day there is amazing views across the Solway Firth to Scotland in one direction and Isle of Mann in the other.
It is a quiet hamlet of Workington with a little community served by a handful of friendly local shops.
In 1760, a local squire built a quay here, used to export coal and limestone, which led it’s development as part of a thriving ship building industry. When local manufacturing industry declined the harbour use declined towards end of 19th century, eventually to be sealed off and used as a reservoir for nearby Magnesium Works. The secret “Magnesite” plant at Harrington was set up during WWII by the Ministry of Aircraft Production to extract magnesium from seawater, for use in aircraft components and incendiary bombs. At the time is was one of only two plants in the country, making some 40,000 tons per annum. Nowadays it’s a nice place for the locals to come and have a walk, take a dip on a nice day and a few boat owners home their beloved vessels at the harbour.
Church Road, Harrington (turn right out of front door, at bottom of turn left)
There are a number of shops – Pie shop on corner, Newsagents, Post office, Butchers and convenience store, pharmacy and hairdressers, plus a couple of pubs – very traditional local pubs where you can really meet the locals! There is a play park at the harbour.
There are two reservoirs within 10 mins walk of the house – turn left bottom of hill (Moorclose Road) and just past the end of the houses on the right is Harrington Reservoir. Turning left out of the house Salterbeck Reservoir entrance is opposite Asda next to the mini roundabout. You can walk to/from it along coastal path that is at the harbour.
Brewery House and Galloping Horse pubs serve food. They are on the main road, turn right out of front door, head up the hill, first you will see Brewery House on right, then further along see Galloping Horse on left.
There are a couple of takeaways between house and little Asda on the main road towards Workington, nearest fish and chip shop is at Moorclose Shops.

Tesco same directions as Large Asda – you will pass Tesco before crossing the river
Morrisons/Aldi/B&M turn left out of front door, follow road to major roundabout, turn left and follow road round.

Bus stop out side the house 30/31 (same side of road as house) towards Workington to change bus to go into Lake District or (opposite side of road) towards Whitehaven
The locals call the stop ‘The one before Beckstone Bridge’ – if you ask for that stop if coming back from Workington direction (it’ll be the one after if coming from Whitehaven!)
