Cute little alternative cinema, notice however that many films are dubbed in Germany. Look for OV (original version) or OmU (Original mit Untertitelns - original with subtitles)

If you are in Düsseldorf you have to try Altbier, the special type of beer brewed in Düsseldorf, unique for Düsseldorf. And this is an epic spot for doing so, always full of people - extra fun on a sunny day when everyone is standing outside. Just be warned. These beers some in small glasses but the waiter will just keep on bringing the glasses until you put your coaster over to signalise that you are done. So don't be surprised - it is part of the "game".

Maybe the best mojitos in town? Incredible drink, extra nice in the summer. Outdoor seating as well as indoor. Down in trendy Medienhafen, a centre for design and architecture.

Bar that also is a restaurant. Sports events in the evening, good outdoor area for sunny days. Fantastic brunches as well. One of the few places in Düsseldorf where you can also get Kölch, the beer from Köln, which might be nice for a change.

Amazing cocktails, popular with expats living in Düsseldorf. In a somewhat shady area, but the cocktail bar itself is very nice - you just don't hang around outside for very long. Always interesting groups of people, often full, so best go here earlier.

Just around the corner - REALLY - and with some of the best cocktails in town. My favourite? Think that might be the ginger cosmopolitan... May get full but it really is worth coming here. Open late.

Another one of those iconic bars, open very late. Can get very crowded but it really depends on when, where, how. Fantastic selection of magical cocktails. They used to have a Basilicum Sour, with fresh basil that I was in love with. Last time I was there it wasn't on the menu, but when I asked for it anyhow the bartender made it for me. Does it get any better than that? This is a secret spot to most tourists, but I believe most Düsseldorfers know about it. It's away from the normal bar area though so people rarely just "drop by", unless you are in the area for a completely different reason.

Arts & Culture

Cultural centre with plenty of art exhibitions and events - check out the Facebook site. Open Monday - Sunday, in a beautiful area, nice for a walk, as it is close to the Hofgarten Park as well - and why not go for a walk along the river into Altstadt if the weather is nice? Very much worth it - NRW forum is great both for rainy and sunny days, there is a nice cafe as well, and sitting on the terrace outside the forum on a sunny day is fantastic.

Gorgeous little castle with stunning castle garden, well worth a visit - either to just stroll around, have a coffee in the garden - picnic possible - or to do a tour of the castle. Sometimes concerts are hosted here as well, and there is a lot of other things going on - so check the website.

Art from the 21:st century, don't miss the basement - I did the first time I was here and I am still close to missing it from time to time Some of the art might not be that straight forward, but really, it is worth coming here just for the building and the light. The park outside is also very cute and it's easy to lose a few hours here.

Generally not open to the wider audience but if you have friends there or a special reason you may get in anyhow. This is an old art academy, and it is worth coming even if it's just for the building and what you can see from the outside. Plenty of galleries, shops selling art books and so on around as well. Also, on a somewhat regular basis there are events and viewings so you can get in to see the art that the students are working on - check the website to find out more.

Great Dimsum, direct from Hong Kong area.... Very classic Cantonese. Just be warned, There is a lot of oil and chilli being fried so you will smell of food when you leave - so make sure you have something to change in to or at least don't go in the suit you are wearing for an important meeting the day after... Very much worth it for the food though!

The traditional German Brauhaus, has been around for a very long time - this is where you want to go if you want to try the very traditional German style food - but remember that every part of Germany have their own specialities. Great for groups but can be a bit full during big events so it is a good idea to book a table. For smaller groups they can usually squeeze you in. Might at times be a bit touristy but in a good way.

Often full, so reservation may be necessary - especially for busy times when a fair is going on - but this is one of the many great Japanese restaurants in town. NO, it is not a sushi place, we have those too, this is a Japanese place with a lot of grilled food, okonomiyaki, and many other interesting finds. The Japanese menu may be more detailed than the German or English menu so if you have a favourite dish from Japan but you can't find it, ask for it - a tip that is true for many of the Japanese restaurants in town. This is authentic Japanese food and you will find the place full of Japanese - a good sign!

Laotian food, as close to authentic as it gets - although they can also make it less spicy if you want to. Everything is really rich in flavour. The duck laab (larb) is my favourite, and the spicy little sausages for starters/snack. Oh MY! Can get busy so if you want to be sure: Come early or reserve before hand.
