Spiritual, Meditation

Founded in 1926, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram has grown, under the Mother's guidance, from a small group of two dozen disciples into a large and diverse community of almost 1600 members. Counting the 400 students of the Centre of Education and the hundreds of devotees who live nearby, the larger ashram community consists of more than 2000 people. The Ashram is located in the eastern part of Pondicherry. Inmates live and work in some buildings spread throughout the area. The focus of community life is the Ashram's main building, usually called simply "the Ashram", which consists of an interconnected block of houses, including those in which Sri Aurobindo and the Mother lived for most of their lives. At its center, in a tree-shaded courtyard, lies the Samadhi, a white marble shrine where their bodies are laid to rest.

‘Senteurs’, in French, signifies ‘Fragrance’. This name was given by The Mother to the perfumery department of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, which started in 1958. Udar Pinto and Kusum worked for it. Kusum dedicated herself to this new venture, which demanded patience, hard work, knowledge and a nose to create. With Mother’s grace and guidance the department grew in time and today it is one of the most visited and appreciated boutiques in Pondicherry. Apart from the various products manufactured at Senteurs: perfumes, eau de colognes, compounds, Aloe vera products, pro-health blends, rose water etc., the boutique has a large section dedicated to essential oils for Aromatherapy.

Cottage Industries was started in 1949, under the guidance of The Mother, to provide Sri Aurobindo Ashram with incense sticks and mats, the surplus being distributed amongst devotees. In time, demand for incense arose from devotees abroad and the first export was made in 1973. As the name suggests, they try and maintain a natural ambience and simple style of working, avoiding as far as possible an industrialised approach to manufacturing. They utilise recycled materials and integrate nature-friendly methods where possible. The product line has expanded to include perfumed incense sticks, perfumed and decorated candles, a line of soaps and body-care products and some ceramic, terracotta and wood artefacts, avoiding as far as possible an industrialised approach to manufacturing. In the mid-1940s sadhaks of Sri Aurobindo Ashram prepared a handmade paper on a very small scale from waste material as creative and useful work. In 1959 larger-scale papermaking equipment was installed in a coconut garden – including a beater, lifting vats, and a calendaring machine. The coconut garden is the location of the factory today, in the heart of Pondicherry.

Dilip Kapur began Hidesign in 1978 as a hobby. With a PhD in international affairs, no design background, the brand and the products were an expression of his belief in natural, sustainable materials and clean simple designs. With their handcrafted look and unorthodox designs, the bags were radically different from anything available in Europe and the USA at the time. Hidesign was quickly adopted by alternative fashion stores in London, San Francisco and Melbourne. Now widely accepted in over 25 countries as a leader in the development of sustainable and innovative leather fashion.

Auroville is a universal township in the making for a population of up to 50,000 people from around the world. The concept of Auroville - an ideal township devoted to an experiment in human unity - came to the Mother as early as the 1930s. In the mid-1960s, the concept was developed and put before the Govt. of India, who gave their backing and took it to the General Assembly of UNESCO. In 1966 UNESCO passed a unanimous resolution commending it as a project of importance to the future of humanity, thereby giving their full encouragement. The purpose of Auroville is to realise human unity – in diversity. Today Auroville is recognised as the first and only internationally endorsed ongoing experiment in human unity and transformation of consciousness, also concerned with - and practically researching into - sustainable living and the future cultural, environmental, social and spiritual needs of mankind.

The French memorial is dedicated to the war heroes of World War I who sacrificed their lives to save the country. Reconstructed in 1970, it is one of the most pristine places to visit in Puducherry. Surrounded by plush green escapades and some splendid gardens, the war memorial serves as a reminder of the freedom we enjoy today. It was originally built in 1937 and inaugurated on 3rd April 1938 by the Governor of Crocicchia. It is also known as the ”Monument aux combattants des Indes françaises morts pour la patrie” in French. Incidentally, Puducherry still has a heavy French influence visible in its vintage buildings and the colour scheme used across the UT.
