Just outside the southwest corner of the old city, not far from Nong Buak Haad Park, is the newer Kanchanapisek Park. The park was built to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the King's ascension to the throne. It stretches along Om Muang Road and lies between the road and the old outer ramparts of the city. While all most people know about is the square inner wall of the old city, there was actually a second, more serpentine wall that curved around the southern and eastern sides of the city. This wall was mostly made of compacted earth, and only a few parts of it can still be seen.

Its motto is “Coffee in the garden” and that’s certainly what you’ll get. The entirely glass enclosed café is wide and airy with a lovely view of the lush plants and moss-covered terracotta structures. In fact, with the rainy season in full swing, this is the perfect spot to bring a good book, a laptop, or friends to enjoy a lazy afternoon coffee and stay protected from afternoon showers.

Arts & Culture

Set in the former Provincial Hall, a handsome Thai-colonial-style building from 1927, this museum provides an excellent primer on Chiang Mai history. Dioramas, photos, artefacts and audiovisual displays walk visitors through the key battles and victories in the Chiang Mai story, from the first settlements to the arrival of the railroad. Upstairs is a charming recreation of a wooden Lanna village. The museum gift shop is exceptionally well stocked with lacquerware, jewellery and even metal false fingernails for the fon lep dance. As the sun starts to dip on Saturday afternoon, the Saturday Walking Street takes over Th Wualai, running southwest from Pratu Chiang Mai at the southern entrance to the old city. There is barely space to move as locals and tourists from across the world haggle vigorously for carved soaps, novelty dog collars, wood-carvings, Buddha paintings, hill-tribe trinkets, Thai musical instruments, T-shirts, paper lanterns and umbrellas, silver jewellery and herbal remedies. Sightseeing

It should come as no surprise that the silversmiths along Th Wualai have decorated their patron monastery with the same fine craftsmanship shown in their shops. The 'silver' ubosot (ordination hall) at Wat Srisuphan is covered inside and out with silver, nickel and aluminium panels, embossed with elaborate repoussé-work designs. The effect is like a giant jewellery box, particularly after dark when the monastery is illuminated by coloured lights. Wat Srisuphan was founded in 1502, but little remains of the original wát except for some teak pillars and roof beams in the main wí·hăhn . The murals inside show an interesting mix of Taoist, Zen and Theravada Buddhist elements. Note the gold and silver Ganesha statue beneath a silver chatra (umbrella) by the ubosot, a sign of the crossover between Hinduism and Buddhism in Thailand. Because this is an active ordination hall, only men may enter the ubosot . Read more: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thailand/chiang-mai-province/chiang-mai/sights/religious/wat-srisuphan#ixzz4KIE3hrZH

Wat Chedi Luang is not quite as grand as Wat Phra Singh, but its towering, ruined Lanna-style chedi (built in 1441) is much taller and the sprawling compound around the stupa is powerfully atmospheric. The famed Phra Kaew (Emerald Buddha), now held in Bangkok's Wat Phra Kaew, resided in the eastern niche until 1475; today, you can view a jade replica, given as a gift from the Thai king in 1995 to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the chedi . Wat Pa Pao Late 19th century Burmese Shan temple Standing apart from the Lanna temples of Chiang Mai is the Wat Pa Pao, a Shan Burmese style temple located just outside the old city walls and moats. The Wat Pa Pao was founded in 1883 by Burmese Shan during the reign of King Inthawichayanon, ruler of Chiang Mai. During the second half of the 19th century when Chiang Mai was one of the centers of the Thai teak logging industry, a great number of Shan Burmese workers migrated to Chiang Mai from the Shan states in North East Burma, and constructed their own places of worship. On the courtyard surrounded by a one foot tall wall with arched brick entrance gates are a large chedi and a viharn, the temple’s assembly hall. Next to the courtyard are a more recent Shan style viharn and another smaller Burmese style building. The temple’s name translates to “grove of Pao trees temple”.

Wat Lok Molee One of Chiang Mai’s most impressive chedis Just outside the old walled city center of Chiang Mai, the Wat Lok Molee is of the city’s older temples. The temple that is also known as the Wat Lok Moli holds one of the largest and most impressive chedis in Chiang Mai. Although the exact founding date of the temple is not known, it is likely that the first structures were built during the 14th century. The temple was probably a Royal Wat, since the Kings of the Mengrai dynasty maintained the temple. King Kuena who ruled Lanna during the second half of the 14th century is said to have invited a number of monks from present day Myanmar to Chiang Mai to spread the teachings of the Buddha. During their stay in Chiang Mai the monks lived in the Wat Lok Molee temple.

Wat Yang Kuang, วัดยางกวง, is located in Tambon Haiya, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. A famous Buddha head, Phra San Sae, was found at the temple and subsequently moved to the Chiang Mai Museum. The large Buddha in a separate Wihan features a replica of the Phra San Sae head. Built as a defence line or not, this temple's history goes back a long time. It was deserted about 200 years ago. Donations are collected at this point to built new temple buildings. A big Buddha head was found here, called Phra San Sae, which was taken to the museum in Chiang Mai. The Buddha head seen at this temple is actually a replica. A large Buddha image is seated behind the Buddha head and to the side stands a ancient chedi.

Wat Pansao has all the elements of a ‘worth-visiting temple’: a pleasant garden setting, a classic Lanna-style main worshipping hall, a crumbling old brick chedi and a couple of interesting legends. The chedi is actually hollow, which makes it, at least to our amateur eye, perhaps Burmese influenced, seeing as how most Chiang Mai chedis (see earlier earlier post here) aren’t and most chedis we saw at, for example, Bagan are.
