If a restaurant is situated in the busiest part of town it doesn't make it touristy. Halkakas (Fishrooster) is a place where you can eat Hungarian quality fish. Why is this a thing? Despite of Hungary's richness in freshwaters, we are not big fish eaters and therefore you don't really get to eat either fresh or Hungarian fish in restaurants. Halkakas is a place where owners have a freshwater fish farm so beyond any doubt, their fish is not only tasty, but also fresh. I am sure they run out of their reasonably priced daily menu very quick but every dish of theirs has a great price related to the quality (I should have written this with capital letters :) ). Open every day from 12 - 22.

The oldest restaurant in Budapest has gotten a modern design recently but Budapesters and tourist who knew it before recall its old-fashioned style with nostalgy. However Firkász (in English 'Scribller' referring to journalists who continue to visit the restaurant since the last century) is well-known among tourists, its barflies are local Hungarian journalists, writers and poets, the pianist's distant friends who come to drink a fröccs (spritzer: wine and soda in different amounts) listen to him playing one or two pieces and stay. The historical building complex was built on the occasion of the Millennial State Expo and Millennial Festivities of Hungary in 1896. A Romanesque, a Baroque revival and an early French Renaissance building are connected to each other in order to commemorate historical architectural styles in 3 dimension. It is stunning. Its court is home for local gastro and music festivals, the Romanesque church is the most popular building among wedding couples. There are touristy parts and there are more authentic neighbourhoods in Budapest. Pozsonyi út and environs are the latter one. The main street of Újlipótváros starting at Jászai Mari tér (Margaret Bridge, Pest side) offers great shopping and dining opportunities from breakfast to dinner (check Firkász and Babka in my Guidebook). Most places are child-welcoming. No coincidence here, majority of inhabitants of the neighbourhood are families with young children. More than 5 well-equipped playgrounds in no time approach from Pozsonyi út. It is on the way to Buda and is situated very close to the Parliament. Where else to charge or recharge your and your children's battery during your holiday? :)

The Royal Palace of Buda is perhaps the only royal edifice in the world that was built to serve representative purposes and never ever a king or queen have lived there. The court of the Royal Palace is home for great art/food/wine/music festivals all around the year. Its environs are being reconstructed. Funny, though, but called by a German name in English, Kunsthalle (Műcsarnok in Hungarian, in English it would be Art Gallery) was established at the end of the 19th century together with Heroes' Square and its surroundings for the ever most special occasion, for the 1000-year-existance of the Hungarian state. It has been the centre of Hungarian and international contemporary fine art and visual culture. Excellent, interesting contemporary exhibitions in a stunning historical building next to a must see sight, well, due to our opinion you should not miss this. Mai Manó House, House of Hungarian Photographers is an iconic place. Its founder, Imperial and Royal Court Photographer from the turning of 19th and 20th centuries, Manó Mai built a Renaissance revival building and dedicated it to photography, an activity hardly considered to be a form of art in that time. Pictures of Hungarian photographers, group-presentations and retrospective exhibitions take place in 3 floors. You get the chance to see the founder's workroom, the Sunlight Studio and many other halls and ornamentation in original style. Visiting Mai Manó House with Budapest Card is free of charge.

Aquincum used to be the northernmost settlement of the Roman Empire. A city of 25000 inhabitants situated on the right (today Buda) bank of River Danube was built to protect the empire from barbarians living on the other side. There is a spacious outdoor section, the Archaeological Park with ruins in very good condition (sounds strange, I know :)) and many indoor exhibitions. Find information for summer, winter and holiday schedule in their opening hours and ticket prices on their website in English. Visit of Aquincum Museum is free for Budapest Card holders.
