Sightseeing

Take the walking paths to the dam where you see the water spill into the gorge. Read the postings explaining the history of the dam and channels which turned the water wheels for the original saw mills. There is a kids play area as well as a kids fishing pond.

There are many trails to choose from. From dirt roads to billy goat type trails it is fantastic to get out and hike in nature. I like to take a loop along the hillside and then head to the river where I rest, eat snacks and enjoy the sound of the rushing water. I don’t like their signage which are just colored trails so I recommend taking a picture of the large map at the trailhead. You can then reference the map as you hike.

Great fairly easy trail which starts off in McEuen park and travels around Tubbs Hill. The entire hike is along the waters edge looking at the Beautiful Lake Coeur d’Alene. Afterwards you can walk along Sherman street for shopping, food or drinks.

Teresa and I love to walk around Riverfront park. The Spokane River flows through the park and there are a couple waterfalls , carousel, play ground, ice skating/ roller blading, art work , street performers and sky buckets for viewing the falls. There are several places to eat and drink right across the street, our favorite is the Irish pub.

Park

Qemiln park is less than 2 miles away. There is a boat launch, kids play area, picnic benches, beach with swim area and miles of hiking trails that emanate west of the parking lot. At times you can see many rock climbers practicing on the cliff faces behind the main park. There are trails that travel along the river just west of the dam.

The Hiawatha bike trail is about 15 miles long with the majority being a 2% grade downhill. They removed the old train tracks and now it is an awesome state park. It starts off with a 1.5 mile old train tunnel (dark, cold but adventurous) and has beautiful vista views, several tunnels and old tressel bridges. This is a state run park so you must buy tickets for the trail pass and a separate fee if you want the bus to take you and your bike back up the mountain to your car. You must have a helmet, warm clothes and a light for the tunnels. There are bike rentals available. Buy online but pick up your pass at Look out pass ski resort. Seasonal operation.
