Towns

Padstow is a picturesque fishing town, just 20 minutes from Little Trewollack Barn. It's most famous for being the home of Rick Stein's original The Seafood Restaurant, but is now packed with many fabulous restaurants, including more of Rick Stein's empire, Paul Ainsworth's Michelin-starred No 6, and Prawn on the Lawn. There are several pay and display car parks, and in summer and during the Padstow Christmas Festival, the park and ride is in operation. With a good selection of independent shops, it's a great place to pick up some souvenirs or some tasty treats for supper, and while there we would also recommend a boat trip (either on the speed boats or out to see dolphins and wildlife) and visiting The Lobster Hatchery. From Padstow, you can also catch the ferry across to Rock, walk along the South West Coast Path, or cycle the Camel Trail to Wadebridge.

Wadebridge is our closest town (4 miles / 10 minutes away) and we love it because it is full of independent shops and cafés. You can get anything you need here, from great coffee and fresh fish, to antiques and ironmongery. It's located halfway between Bodmin and Padstow on the Camel Trail, and has several bike hire shops so you can explore the area with ease. Wadebridge is the best place to stock up on food and drink for your stay. Try The Vine for fruit and veg, Williams or Duttons butchers (both on Molesworth Street), Off The Hook fishmonger, Relish Food & Drink deli, and Barnecutts bakeries. SaltBox (near Lidl) is a "pile" of containers, housing some great little businesses, including a wine bar, coffee shop, pizza, curry, tapas and street food stalls. There are plenty of pay & display car parks in the town.

St Ives is a beautiful town, with lots of lovely shops and restaurants, plus of course it's home to the famous Tate St Ives and Barbara Hepworth museum. It's around an hour's drive from Little Trewollack Barn to St Ives, and St Ives can get very busy in the summer, and it's not easy to park there. We'd recommend driving to St Erth and then catching the train. This is also one of the most picturesque train journeys you are ever likely to find! See https://greatscenicrailways.co.uk/stations/st-erth-park-and-ride/ Once in town, we suggest wandering the cobbled streets and soaking in the atmosphere. There are lots of restaurants and cafés, but if you want to go somewhere special, then make sure you have reserved a table at the Porthminster Beach Café. https://www.porthminstercafe.co.uk/the-restaurant/

Fowey is a small harbour town on the south coast of Cornwall, and it's a lovely place to spend a few hours. There are some good shops and restaurants (Appleton's being our favourite). Famous as Daphne du Maurier's hometown, Fowey hosts an annual art and literary festival in the author's honour each May. Wander out of town to Readymoney Cove and St Catherine's Castle for some fabulous views of the estuary and out to sea. See https://www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk/walksdb/647/ for more details.

Penzance is over an hour's drive from Little Trewollack Barn, but it's easy to spend a day in the area to make the journey worthwhile. We'd recommend visiting St Michael's Mount, taking a dip in the fabulous Jubilee Pool, and visiting the Minack Theatre. The South West Coast Path from Mousehole around Land's End to Zennor is stunning, with rugged cliffs and hidden coves. Land's End itself is a bit of a theme park now, but Cape Cornwall is a good alternative if you want to feel as if you are on the edge of the world! There are lots of good places to eat around here, for which it is advisable to book in advance, including The Gurnard's Head in Zennor, The Old Coastguard in Mousehole, The Godolphin in Marazion, and The Shore in Penzance.

The capital city of Cornwall, Truro is less of a tourist destination, and more a centre of business and education for the county. There are, however, several noteworthy places to visit, including the magnificent cathedral and the Royal Cornwall Museum. The Hall for Cornwall is the county's biggest theatre, currently closed while undergoing a huge renovation project, and the reopening date isn't yet known.

Falmouth is a bustling harbour town, made more buzzy by the presence of the students from Falmouth University. It's a fun town to visit, with lots of good restaurants, pubs and bars. We can recommend The Wheelhouse for fabulous fresh seafood (booking months in advance is essential), Dolly's Tea Room and Wine Bar, Verdant Seafood Bar, and Rick Stein's Fish. The Maritime Museum gives a great insight into the history and importance of the town and its harbour and all things sea-related. Visitors can jump aboard a boat for a trip up the river to Trelissick Gardens or St Mawes. See https://www.falriver.co.uk/ferries/enterprise-boats for more details. Just around the corner, Gyllyngvase Beach is a popular spot for swimming and SUP-ing, and has a lovely café, the Gylly Beach Café. Swanpool and Maenporth beaches both have good watersports facilities and cafés.

Newquay has just about shaken off its reputation of being a party town, but it still doesn't have the charm of some other Cornish towns. The harbour is pretty, and is a good place to pick up some fresh crab and lobster, and Fistral Beach is one of the UK's most famous surfing beaches. In terms of eating out, we can recommend Fish House Fistral for great seafood, and Lewinnick Lodge on Pentire headland. Rick Stein's restaurant and The Stable also overlook Fistral Beach. Newquay is home to some good coffee shops, including The Jam Jar and Box & Barber, and we like Gilmore's, with its tacos, cocktails and crazy golf. The Blue Reef Aquarium and Newquay Zoo are best suited to families with small children, but both are good, well-run attractions.

If you are driving down to Cornwall on the A30, we recommend popping into Phil Warren's butchery in Launceston on your way past. They supply many top restaurants in the UK, and the range and quality of their meat, and customer service, are outstanding. Their onsite café is a good place to pick up something for breakfast or lunch.

The Fox's Revenge is located on the edge of a caravan park near Summercourt, but don't let that put you off. Once in the gorgeous pub, you won't see the caravans, and the food here is exceptional. Heaps of flavour, generous portions, and lovely staff. Booking recommended. https://thefoxsrevenge.com/

One of our favourites, but it's over an hour from Little Trewollack Barn to The Gurnard's Head in Zennor, close to Land's End. The food here is outstanding, and worth booking for lunch and making a day of it, way down west. http://www.gurnardshead.co.uk/

Tucked away in a little courtyard just back from the harbour in Padstow, it would be easy to miss BinTwo. It's tiny, but it has a great selection of wines by the glass, good coffee, and serves light lunches and snacks. Voted the UK's best independent wine merchant in 2019 and 2020, it is also the ideal place to pick up some bottles of wine to take home. https://bintwo.com/
