Hikes
This coastal reserve is a wonderful day trip from Salt Rock. It offers picnicing at the estuary, an easy hike through coastal forest and mangroves to the river mouth as well as the truly phenomenal raffia palm forest that is home to the palm-nut vulture. It takes about an hour to drive there from Salt Rock.
Umlalazi Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife park
This coastal reserve is a wonderful day trip from Salt Rock. It offers picnicing at the estuary, an easy hike through coastal forest and mangroves to the river mouth as well as the truly phenomenal raffia palm forest that is home to the palm-nut vulture. It takes about an hour to drive there from Salt Rock.
A beach walk from Christmas Bay to Tinely Manor is a lovely day out. Have lunch in Tinley at the local's favourite, Impulse by the Sea, for a great curry. The walk takes about 2 hours one way and there is a river crossing through the umhlali river mouth - but it is very easy one. Multiple spots for ocean swims along the way and if you do the walk at low tide there are lots of rock pools to explore as well. You can always uber back after lunch!
