Museums/Exhibits

The state's first spoken history museum is an excellent place to get your introduction to the wild and wonderful history of the island. There's a "Discovery Ship" area for children to explore life as a pirate, a choice of docent or self-guided tours, and exhibits featuring treasures from Amelia Island's last 4000 years.

Many residents recommend this casual Italian restaurant, near the Mayport Ferry: "Everything is made from scratch. It is very small and strongly recommend reservations. It is also not the place to go if you are in a hurry." 9429 Hecksher Drive (Past Sand Dollar on the right -has a 'ramp' out front. No sign, except "Open") 904- 647-7498

Atlantic Seafood Bait & Tackle, located at 10 Ash Street in Fernandina Beach, offers a wide range of fish and shellfish caught by local fishermen. From one of my guests: "Very impressed that the fish monger filleted fresh flounder in front of us and got it exactly to our weight request. It’s a talent to do that!"

Located inside The Shops of Omni Amelia Island, Marché Burette offers a deli and cafe serving breakfast, soup & sandwiches, pizza, ice cream and desserts. Nice atmosphere, but can be pricey. A small market on the other side offers beer, wines and groceries, but it is quite an expensive option for stocking the fridge! Harris Teeter in Shops at Amelia Market is a great alternative, and Amelia Liquors is also located there. Amelia Island Wine Company in the Palmetto Walk Shopping Village just up A1A is also highly recommended.
