Now known as Roast8ry, hands down the best coffee in Chiang Mai, if not the best coffee in Thailand. Ristr8to has transformed the cafe scene in Chiang Mai and managed to put Chiang Mai right there at the world's top "coffee" destinations. Their coffee is best when served in hot variants. Avoid upsetting them by asking for iced coffee.

Time for dessert? Cheevit Cheeva, which is just a block away from our house, is a Chiang Mai brand that now expands all over the country. People go there for their "shaved ice" especially the Salted Egg Bua-Loi Bingsu.

If you only have time to visit only one temple, Wat Chedi Luang is the one temple you should visit in Chiang Mai. It's located right at the centre of the Old Town moat. The main pagoda is one of the oldest in the country and has survived quite a lot of major events in Chiang Mai from war times to earth quakes.

Things to do

JingJai Market is a flea market/farmers market that is open every Saturday and Sunday morning. On Saturday, it is called a "Hobby" market--more like a flea market selling interesting second hand products and handicrafts. On a Sunday, it is a farmers' market where there's a lot of food in particular bakery. I recommend this more than the typical Sunday walking market in the old town where I find it to be more of a tourist trap.

Chiang Mai's largest shopping centre where the locals get their shopping done. You can find pretty much everything here, from the latest AirPods Pros to PlayStation 5. Note that this is just another shopping mall and nothing special. If you are looking to go to a cinema, I would recommend heading to MAYA as it is closer to our home.

Traveler advice

Getting around

Download "Grab" Ride Sharing App

Chiang Mai has only one public transportation option : the red-trucks that you see around town. We call them Song-teaws. They are only useful if they found them but they are not that difficult to find if you walked along larger roads. If you are looking to get around quickly, download a phone application called "Grab". They are like Uber. There are a number of options available on Grab. If you are solo traveller and keen on sitting behind a stranger on a small motorbike, you can try Grab Bike (win) for the lowest travel fee possible.
