The sculpture was created by Kathleen Chambers, a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art and installed to mark Glasgow’s status as European City of Culture in 1990. It's a 3D topographical relief map of Glasgow city centre, including the River Clyde on the southern edge of the city centre. When it rains (which is regularly in Glasgow) the River Clyde part of the sculpture fills up and flows over the edge. It would've been useful back in the days before googles to get an ariel view of the centre of Glasgow and see where all the main buildings are in relation to one another. It's also nice just to run your fingers along the sculptures and image feeling the roof tops of the buildings.
