Sightseeing

A must-see for the literary traveler, poet Anne Spencer and her husband crafted a handmade magical home that everyone who was anyone in the Harlem Renaissance visited. The garden is always open, but you’ll need to schedule a tour in advance. This is an extraordinarily special place!

Excellent children’s museum with a great multi-level rope-based playscape. Excellent rainy day location for the under-ten set. Set in an old warehouse by the James River in downtown Lynchburg, it’s also a great introduction to this very pretty city.

Weirdly great steakhouse inside the Kirkland Hotel. Uniformly excellent food and service. Nice local beer list. It’s weird, but we go there when we need a white-table cloth experience that these kids will also enjoy. Across from the Lynchburg mall and next to the bowling alley, so it’s part of an excellent rainy day escape!

Wonderful 1940s era seafood restaurant. It’s totally updated the menu, but the old menus hang in every booth and are impossibly charming. Excellent Saturday brunch! Great food. Romantic!

This is the delicious homemade Mister Goodies— Not the factory soft serve. I have no idea why the two ice-cream stores have the same name, but it’s very confusing, and they are very very different!
